They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.
Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. Under the watchful eye of the stern Miss Wellwood, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament. There’s Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to find a way to keep her baby and escape to a commune. And Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby’s father. And Holly, a wisp of a girl, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.
Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them. Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid…and it’s usually paid in blood.

"'Welcome to Waffle House,' the waitress said, coming over to their back corner booth and stopping short. 'Y'all okay?'
Louise sat hunched in the booth, hand back over her left eye, staring down at the table. Mark had found some sweatpants and flip-flops in his truck, but they were way too big and her T-shirt looked grimy and the collar was torn. Mark was cleaner but he looked like exactly the type of guy who'd go to a Waffle House at three in the morning after shooting a haunted puppet."
Grady Hendrix does not fucking disappoint.

Big box furniture stores are creepy enough!
Big Box Stores are creepy enough! #Books #bookReview #Horror #GradyHendrix
You know how you walk into an IKEA and it’s just a maze of furniture? Arrows on the floor that tell you which way to go and eventually it dumps you out at a huge warehouse where you have to find the boxes for the items you want to pick up. It’s huge. One could live in the fake living spaces fixed up. It’s not shopping, it’s a destination place. But even you have to admit, it’s a little…

2023 - Week 6 - A book where books are important
My Pick: - The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires - Grady Hendrix
Being born a Southerner I loved this book and all it’s Southern references. The book club in this story is my kind of book club. Strong friendships that get pushed to their limits. True crime and spooky reads is the way to go.
“. . . Let me tell you something…there’s nothing nice about Southern ladies.”
My Rating: 5 out of 5

Finished "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix today!! Rating: ☆☆☆☆ I've said it before but I love Hendrix's writing style. It just flows in my head. I enjoy his characters and overall storytelling. Only thing I'm not 100% in love with I'd say are the endings. But I'm finding his newer stories have a more satisfying ending. This one did not disappoint! The other pics show off my cover notes, trigger warnings, and tabs!! (I had a lot of 🤬 feels while reading this haha. Absolutely fuck Carter lol.) . . . . #booktok #bookstagram #gradyhendrix #bookreview #bookrecommendations (at New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck_wqTsO3Ju/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
southern women vs vampire = 5/5 read!
Grady Hendrix ‘Why do you pretend what we do is nothing?’ She asked? ‘Every day, all the chaos and messiness of life happens and every day we clean it all up. Without us, they would just wallow in filth and disorder and nothing of any consequence would ever get done. Who taught you to sneer at that? I’ll tell you who. Someone who took their mother for granted.’ grace glared at Patricia, nostrils…

The Final Girls Support Group - Grady Hendrix (@penguinrandomhouse) Today's finally the day! @paperbacksfromhell new one, The Final Girls Support Group, is finally out from Penguin Random House! I've been waiting all year for this one so i tore right into this this morning. Am absolutely loving it, so far! The premise is simple but wonderful - a group of Final Girls meet in a church basement and have a support group and have done so for 16 years. Each of the girls is a bit of a mess, in different ways, as they've all coped with their trauma differently. And then someone starts picking them off. That's as far as i've gotten, so far! As is so often the case with Grady Hendrix, it finds that delicate equilibrium between character study and hardcore horror, with some wonderful Mystery thrown in to add some delightful zest! Grady Hendrix has become one of my favourites of 21st-Century Horror. I've read nearly every one of his books this last year. So far, The Final Girls Support Group does not disappoint! Will post a full review once i finish the whole thing! . #GradyHendrix #TheFinalGirlSupportGroup #book #books #newbooks #reading #amreading #nowreading #bookstagram #bookworm #booksaremagic #bibliophile #horrorbooks #horrorlit #FinalGirl #FinalGirls #slasher #slashers #horrorcommunity #horrorfamily #readersofinstagram #bookshelf #instaread #booksbooksbooks #bookblog #bookoftheday #booklife #bookgram #booknews #jsimpson https://www.instagram.com/p/CRSpf-2o2HB/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Honestly, Patricia, relax. Pick your battles. No one’s going to die if they don’t eat every meal at the table or if they don’t havw clean underwear one day.’
‘And what if that’s the day they get hit by a car?’ Grace asked.
‘If Ben Jr. got hit by a car I think you’d have bigger problems than the condition of his underpants,’ Maryellen said.” x “But if the police think it was an accident…’ Patricia began.
‘The police think all kinds of things,’ Mrs. Greene said. ‘Doesn’t necessarily make them true.’” x “It’s a child a year, for three years,’ Patricia said. ‘I know they’re not our children, but they’re children. Are we not supposed to care about them because they’re poor and black?” x “The last time we did this we learned one thing,’ Patricia said. ‘The men stick together. Their friendship with him is stronger now than it was then. There’s only us.” x was really excited to see this one when it was published and finally got around to reading it. connected to one of his previous books (My Best Friend’s Exorcism; same neighborhood, a few years later), it definitely captured the atmosphere of the time (late 80s/early 90s) and made me think of Stranger Things and Salem’s Lot. Ladies gettin’ it done, For The Win. I really liked it. (also got a bunch more titles to add to my to read list 😆🤦🏼‍♀️, thanks Grady!) #Bookstagram #WhatIRead #LibraryBook #GradyHendrix #TheSouthernBookClubsGuideToSlayingVampires #vampires
