Okay, so I've made this comparison before - Rogue/Elphaba and Gambit/Fiyero - but today I was asked by my friend to sing No Good Deed and it hit me right in the head

It's Rogue after Gambit's death. The same situation, the same rage, the same grief, the same desperate attempt to do something - anything - to bring them back, change it somehow.

Fiyero, where are you? Already dead or bleeding? One more disaster I can add to my Generous supply?

It is a decision fueled with grief and anger, by her pain of losing the man she loved, of seeing the horrors of Genosha. She leaves Gambit's coat because she knows he wouldn't let her. Because she knows it's not the right way.

She doesn't have it in her to care anymore.

i've been rewatching X-men '97 and one of the very first scenes of the first episodes kinda just... stuck with me.

it's the first time we see Gambit in the series (this part of the series at least). it's basically the introduction of the character.

and that's what he says.

yeah, we can say it's him being irresponsible and laid-back, especially in contrast with Scott who is scolding him. but the choice of words is also kinda... there's some kind of subtext i just can't shake off.

"these beignets needed me more than you did, mon ami."

in other words, he essentially says "you don't need me." Remy doesn't think the team needs him. doesn't believe he's some important part of it.

which makes his sacrifice later all the more heartbreaking.

he didn't care. he knew others would go on without him. believed that loss of him is not something essential.
