As a trans person I personally don't really care if you boycott Harry Potter or not.

I know, in response to that statement there's probably an endless flood of people countering with "art can't be separated from the artist" and whatnot.

I just honestly find it really performative and shallow? Like, there is so much evil and hate and violence against the community happening everywhere right now, it's only getting worse with every year, and you're gonna look me in the eyes and be like "Just so you know, I didn't buy Hogwarts Legacy." Wow. Gee. How gracious.

You are not engaging in an act of resistance or revolution by shitting on Harry Potter, I'm sorry but you're not. I can understand it as a personal choice, like if you don't eat meat or don't go to McDonald's type shit. But at the end of the day, and some folks are gonna be mad when I say this, but at the end of the day - you're not doing shit.

Art may not be financially separated from its creator, very much the case with JKR, unfortunately, but if you're gonna believe for a fucking second that fandom culture cannot be separated from the author... you're stupid. People have been writing Star Trek fanfiction since the 1960s, so don't come at me like some puritan nutcase about how no one is not "allowed" to engage with a specific fandom that you deem "tainted" or whatever. Are we really so servile to capitalism that our only solution to JKR is to boycott Harry Potter entirely? Are we gonna boycott Star Wars next for all the countless evil the Disney corporation is doing?

Do you really care about the plight of the trans and gender non-comforming community or are you just caught in the most current internet trend? Cause that's all trends are now, shitting on things and shaming anyone who engages with it.

Lastly, and this pertains to Harry Potter specifically - that shit is the gayest fucking story ever created. Kids that are inherently "different" all being sent to a place where they're taken care of, able to freely express their otherness, where they're amongst their kind and are allowed to do magic without repercussions - that story is queer. To the fucking bone and skeleton. Life seen through a queer lens appropriated by a vile cisgender hag, because frankly the only way the average person can comprehend the plight of a minority community is when that struggle takes place in a fantastical setting, or when bad things happen to white people instead of poc.

In summary:

If you're gonna walk up to me irl and start telling me how much you hate Harry Potter and JKR (because you perceive me as trans) I find that genuinely more transphobic than if you just keep quietly enjoying the magic wizard story.
