I know this is probably a “well, girl DUH” kinda moment but I just realized. With the Titans being literally the size of a continent, a lot of these skulls the Titan Trappers wear and decorate with were probably really young/baby titans. So this whole time King thought he had found his kin while they’re literally parading around in the remains of (theoretically) children.

It's actually quite remarkable how every episode that features Belos/Philip at any length has these small moments where it makes him seem almost sympathetic or have redeeming traits, then just makes him even worse.

This man is vile. Absolutely fascinating, but utterly vile.

He's an excellent villain.

I'm rewatching the episode, and Belos is SO deeply fuckedupedly religious, holy. This is ALL about Institutionalized Christianity. No wonder Disney cancelled this show. Promising myself to not make this too long so here's some quick points:

Humans are born into sin, inherently sinful and must spend their lives repenting for their nature (simply by being 'witches' he probably believes there is no such redemption for the inhabitants of the Isles anyways).

Your soul will be doomed to the ashes of hell if you don't repent now. Belos probably saw the 'devil' in his brother and thought he was doing a service of god to kill him.

Remember we are dealing with The Demon Realm. Belos probably believes he is trapped inside some kind of hell. The Titan is the BI's version of God, and he just repeats the rhetoric he's internalized to make it digestible for the citizens here.

He literally thinks he is a saviour and all of the carnage is worth it because he is ridding the world from the influence of the demon realm; which I am sure is very intentionally a society free of homophobia and racism, things that have been largely installed by Christianity and religion.

I might go so far as to suggest that Hunter's grooming by Belos (which doesn't have to be explicit in that way) is probably in reference to the proliferation of grooming done by priests, often with the excuse of this is 'how god wants it' / 'the titans plans'.

They’ve “all” betrayed him. Every last Golden Guard, every last Hunter, every Grimwalker. 

Every Wittebro. 

They all betrayed Philip at some point, because they’re fundamentally good people. And yet he keeps on going, he keeps making them, because he can’t be wrong, he can’t be, and one day he’ll get it right; one day his brother reanimated will understand. They’ll be together again, and they’ll be united. 

Philip just has to keep trying.

I’ll do anything to save humanity from evil

That’s it. That’s the definitive explanation for Emperor Belos/Phillip Wittebanes’ actions.

He believes that everything surrounding witches, anything strange and foreign that doesn’t align with his own personal view of the world, is evil. And it’s his duty, as the benevolent savior of humanity, to protect them and destroy evil, no matter the cost.

He has spent centuries living in the demon realm. Yet, he never allowed himself to enjoy what that new world had to offer to him. He never saw witches and demons as his equals; only as demonic, savage beings that have to be exterminated. He could have had a happy life living among witches. He could have had a peaceful, yet exciting life. We know he’s smart and he figured out the glyphs. He could have been alright.

But he can’t, because he’s convinced that they are all evil.

If these statements sound familiar, they are basically the beliefs of a white, Christian imperialist. it’s what he is. He doesn’t know anything else. He destroys and establishes himself as what’s good and right and superior. He only knows how to love what has been taught to him.

That’s why he is the foil to Luz, as we have all theorized. Luz came here and let herself learn everything she could. Sure, she taught witches and demons about the human world, but she never became pushy. She let herself enjoy the wonders of this brand new world she found herself in.

And it’s not like she takes everything she’s given uncritically. Luz manages to combine her rebellious spirit and her new knowledge to change the world around her in a positive way. When she sees something that isn’t good, she changes it for the better, using reason. She spent her first day at Hexside changing the limitations of what students were allowed to learn.

Belos sees something new and wants to destroy it, while Luz sees something new and wants to love it.

honestly I don’t think lilith was ever meant to be placed in the coven and that’s why she was always doing desk work instead of what the other covenheads were doing. she wasn’t the clawthorne sister they wanted but the one that was leftover because eda threw the duel, she never met up with their standards and she never actually stood out to them unlike eda who was creative with her magic. it’s why she was so expendable while raine wasn’t. it’s because she wasn’t what the coven actually wanted but only had to make do with what they were given. she was abused and manipulated in an environment she hoped to get into for years as a teenager girl and she was never even meant to end up there in the first place. and now she’s just processing and healing from that as a grown woman after two decades of that isolation.

So like, Martian Manhunter is a telepath and he’s said several times in Justice League comics that he doesn’t like getting into Batman’s head because it’s really unpleasant in there, and I always kind of rolled my eyes because at the time it was said, Batman was in his toxic masculinity/I’m so edgy stage. I thought it was a cheap way of going “oooh look he’s so grim and dark and cool even telepaths can’t handle him”

But taken with the modern “Batman has PTSD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder” this suddenly makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE because if there is a way to get a telepath to go “um no thank you” to some mental shenanigans it would be someone with constant obsessive intrusive thought spirals and massive trauma.

Like Martian Manhunter hooking up a mental link between Justice League members trying to screen out how Batman’s brain is screaming at him for the entire 12 hour mission about how Nightwing hasn’t stopped by the cave to switch out his costume for the new improved kevlar weave so he has definitely already been killed by a rocket launcher and oh god what is Batman going to say at the funeral

so after the mission is over Martian Manhunter has like, a telepathic hangover and has to call Dick up on his Justice League reserve communicator going “I swear to god, if you don’t get your ass to Gotham to switch out your suit I will come down there, phase into your body and WALK YOU THERE MYSELF. Which incidentally, IS ALSO SOMETHING BATMAN WORRIES ABOUT” and then has to crawl into bed for 3 days
