PSA about Barbara Gordon's de-aging:

It's often claimed Barbara was de-aged.... and that she was de-aged because of Dick/dickbabs. The first part is true; the second part is highly unlikely.

Was she de-aged? Yes. Pre-Crisis Babs was placed in the same generation as Bruce. Her age is never explicitly stated (as is normal for comics), but the thrust of Pre-COIE implied her to be around the same age as Bruce. Meanwhile, as you can see above, Post-Crisis Babs arrives in Gotham as a kid. Her Post-Crisis back story is different than Pre-Crisis. After COIE, she's written as Jim's niece who grew up in rural Ohio and only came to Gotham after her father (Jim's brother), Roger, died. (Her mom had died years earlier.)

She arrived in Gotham as a thirteen-year-old shortly after the events of Batman: Year One, per Jim's statement about just having a child (in the above panel).

Now, important context: How old was Bruce at this time? Well, BYO tells us Bruce is 25 when he returns to Gotham. (Which, (holy crap!) that means Bruce left when he was only 13/14 years of age. I didn't know that before now.) Batman: Year One—as its name implies—spans the course of a year, meaning Bruce was likely 26 at the end of the story.

So, even as early as 1987, when Secret Origins introduced Babs, there was already a sizable age gap. One could not read Secret Origins after reading Batman: Year One and not conclude that Barbara was much younger than him. The comic in question came out years prior to Nightwing '96 or No Man's Land (where Dick and Babs officially became a couple).

And, not to state the obvious, but Dick was dating a certain alien princess at the time Secret Origins gave Babs her PC origin. Very unlikely a comic would de-age a character so they can be with a character who was already dating someone, only for them not to actually start dating until over a decade later.
