The Fall

cw: allution to violence, gravity but painful, almot drowning, injuries, near death experience, gunshot wound, vague potential spoilers to s2 ep 11/12

only about half beta read, we don't die but there's a near death experience

also english isn't my first language so if anything seems weird or off, I will blame it on that

Time seemed to slow down as gravity took her. Everything seemed light and meaningless from where her body had tipped backwards to fall from the watch tower. For a moment she was weightless and nothing mattered. Not the scorching bright lights that illuminated her fall. Not the dulled sound of gunshots and canon fire in the distance, hammering against her eardrums in a futile attempt of a warning. It was almost as if time had stilled to drag out this singular moment. And for a blink of a second, it almost seemed beautiful.

Not a second long lived though.

The foliage and brushwood below the tower gave a sickening crackle as her weight crashed through it. Her back collided with the forest floor, knocking the air out of her lungs, or it would’ve if the cold, metallic bullet lodged deep within her shoulder hadn’t done so only seconds prior to her demise. And she swore she almost felt herself bounce before gravity dragged her further down the hill. The sound of a abruptly cut off, gut-wrenching gasp fills the air, as she desperately tries to catch her breath, accompanied by the distant roaring of gun and canon fire, mixing together into a cacophony of pain. Her hands reach out to desperately claw at her surroundings in a futile attempt to stop her descend. Twigs and exposed roots lash at her face and her body seemingly rhythmically beats against cold dirt, small rocks and roots as she cascades down the steep hillside leading up to the watch tower. There isn't a a moment, not even a second, for her to catch her breath or let out a pained groan before her body meets water.

The cold seeps through her almost in an instant, dulling the aching pain of her fall and leaving her with the stinging cold of the river. Her body almost goes limp from the shock and her eyes widen with a sickening gasps, leaving water to rush into her mouth and lungs. She hurls and contorts in an attempt to free her lungs of the foreign liquid. Her arms trash out in an effort to beat against the current of the river and push herself upwards. Her head breaks the surface with a staggered gasps that is quickly interrupted by violent coughs. Her head dips beneath the waves and she forces her body to push herself up to keep somewhat afloat. Water pushes itself up her throat and out of her mouth and nose. Despite the pain and cold she pushes her body further towards the riverbank. Her arms reach in hope of grabbing onto an exposed root, a rock, anything beneath the cold. Hands glide through dark nothingness. Water splashes her face and dips her under again. In another feeble attempt she reaches out.

Something grabs onto her wrist and pulls. Then her arm, then the scruff of her samue. Another set of hands join and grab onto her other side, pulling her out of the cold water and onto land. Her hands claw at the grass as she crawls further onto land and away from the watery death behind her. Her body tips onto its side and she leans forward, as she convulses. Desperate coughs fill the air as her lungs push water up and out of her esophagus. Her eyes sting with tears and her throat burns as she takes in her first real breath since the fall. And it hurts. It's sharp and stings like a thousand needles entering her lungs, and for a millisecond she wished she'd drowned. Then that passes and her body fills with pain. From the water. From the fall from the tower down the hill. From the gunshot. Then, something else.

A flash of dark hair and cold, clouded eyes crosses her mind. And it fills her with something else. Vengeance.

Her breaths come out in ragged, shallow pants. Trembles shake through her body as she tried to recover. Blood slowly drips from her nose while she stares down the grass as her mind catches up. Angry bruises form beneath her wet, dirtied clothes. Blood pools from the gaping hole in her shoulder and seeps into the tattered cloth. The sound of approaching footsteps and a voice calling out to her makes her rise her head. Only now does she notices the distant sound of voices and the two uniformed men close to her, that must've pulled her from certain death. She pays them no mind and her gaze is unblinking even when blood, from the laceration on her forehead, flows down her face and into her eye. Her entire attention focused on the pair of deeply clouded, dark brown eyes before her. The light reflects off of the warm blood, upon the metal strapped to his forehead, like the cold water on her face: A Remembrance to rain drops on a stained glass window.

Her eyes stay unwavering on his, the light of the flares turning her gaze into quiet lightning before a deafening storm. There’s not a single word or sound exchanged between the two but there's a look. A quiet understanding. An unspoken request for revenge. A silent promise of death.

Rhythmic beats drum in her ears, accompanied by a light ringing. The edge of her vision flickers as vignette slowly creeps into sight, sending spots of black and white over her vision. Her body seems to grow heavier as fatigue steadily claims her limb for limb. Her eyes stay on his the whole time, even as she can feel her eyelids begging to shut and gravity gently dragging her body backwards to slump against the soft grass. The upward tilt at the corners of his mouth is the last thing her eyes catch before they shut and darkness takes over her.
