Harrowhark stuff I did a while back

Watching the Kill James Bond episode on Moby Dick. This may be my Locked Tomb obsession but there’s a LOT of John Gauis and Ahab parallels, among other things. Any posts on that talk about the parallels?

Currently in the fight of my life which is me vs. my headaches when I can’t take any NSAIDS.

The related battle is me (narcoleptic) vs. going to sleep (only thing that can help the headache, but this absolutely fucked sleep schedule says no)

This scene where Gideon is enumerating to Aiglamene the punishments Harrow has inflicted on her for trying to escape… man that shit has layers.

First read through I assumed she was exaggerating for effect. It couldn’t actually be as bad as she was saying. Frostbite is a bit more than an inconvenience, and she’s not missing any toes.

Second read through I knew she wasn’t exaggerating. I knew now that Gideon doesn’t do that, if she’s complaining about something it’s probably worse than she’s admitting. Knowing now what Gideon’s physical tolerences are, these were probably murder attempts. The frostbite was real, Gideon isn’t missing toes because she can regenerate or revive necrotic tissue. What doesn’t make sense now is matching this Harrow who would freeze and poison Gideon with the Harrow whose main goal is to keep Gideon with her, the same Harrow that watched over Gideon when she was having nightmares and hated to hurt her by siphoning her.

It was the third reading when I connected the circumstances—attemping to escape the Ninth—with the murder of Ortus Nigenad. Gideon assumed that had been Harrow, too, until she asks her about it and it turns out Crux planted the bomb and tried to convince Harrow it had been an accident. “Above all else, Nav, … he couldn’t bear what he saw as disloyalty.” And therefore he murders people who try to leave.

It had been fucking Crux the whole time. To Crux, trying to escape the Ninth is a death sentence. He’s already followed through once in canon, and Gideon had misattributed the murder to Harrow. And why wouldn’t she, on the Ninth she thought of Crux as an extension of Harrow’s will. But he isn’t, he’s the cussed mean old man who raised Harrow and who sometimes kills her subjects then lies to her about it. Maybe Harrow jammed Gideon in the lift, maybe not, that does seem like something she would do. But I’m convinced it was Crux who poisoned and froze her.

What a weird parallel I just noticed. The gang, especially Honesty, always asks Hot Sauce if they’re her best boys. And she says they are. Something about the dialogue flow flees very similar to this line by John.

"NEVER LEFT THE PLANET, DIED IN THIS SELFSAME TOWER"... ok. ok. so. okay so. if we're operating under the assumption that canaan house is john & company's labs, and that the other skeleton servants also died at canaan house and never left the planet, then one can assume that the bone servants in gideon the ninth are all of the cultists & ex-cultists in nona the ninth.

wow. so. after the cultists killed johns friends... he didn't fully resurrect them but instead kept them all to work for him and his pals and make food for them and rot until they couldn't even remember how to write anymore. okay. the implications.

The Locked Tomb is really interesting to read as a lawyer.

Like there’s some really odd fixations on contracts.

I also see a lot of people mention marriage in its romantic sense. But marriage is another form of a legal contract.

Other law things: suing for peace, ‘charging’ someone with crimes, there’s so much more than this too.

I don’t know what it means or why it comes up.

Sometimes I think about how the titles for the Lyctors describe the Cavaliers but not the Necromancer. And how that implies G1deon wouldn’t be that dutiful. I also wonder if he’s the type of guy that WOULD let John take an arm but maybe WOULDN’T be the type to push the button for a nuke. Maybe John knew he could trust G1deon because he could literally make G1deon’s arm do it.

can we talk about gideon the first can we please talk about gideon the first. he is constantly being used as a tool or a weapon. john takes his arm off and uses him as a bomb. he sends him to melbourne and stops his heart. john resurrects him and shapes him into his "attack dog," a role that is absolutely informed by his race, as the one confirmed dark-skinned character among the lyctors. he's never treated the way augustine and mercymorn are. pre-resurrection, a— and m— sleep in the facility with john but g— sleeps outside in his ute. post-ascension, he spends 10,000 years with gaps in his memory, feeling as though he's gone mad, and he gets no sympathy for it. he does john's bidding, unquestioningly. he fights varun the eater alone, because mercymorn and augustine leave him there, and he dies, and nobody notices. the closest thing to a eulogy he gets from the people who have been his companions for 10,000 years is:
