my biggest hot take is that, while it has aged poorly and has certainly heavily misrepresented characters like babs down the stretch, IN THE CONTEXT OF CURRENT CONTINUITY AND AT THE TIME OF ITS RELEASE, tt’s nightwing had the vibes needed for the series
#call me oracle speaks#like i do not think people realize how baddddd the ric era was#looking back on it now#it was 2 years basically without the titular character of the series LEADING the title#the main joker war arc was generally disliked except for how they finally brought back dick#most people didn’t even like how they did THAT#and what else was there in the batfamily to latch onto?#rebirth batgirl was ending#same with rhato#there was a new robin solo coming but only on the back of literally the worst 4 years of damian’s life#where he brainwashed the titans into working with him#his brother hated him and had amnesia for two years#and bane snapped alfred’s neck in front of him#and mainline batman wasn’t doing so hot either!#we’d just finished the king run and were in the middle of city of bane and just kinda flopping around#where better to start a new nightwing run with positive vibes to combat the rest of the darkness going on in gotham at the time

Saw you talking about being intimidated by Cass's nml origin and honestly I read that thing having touched absolutely nothing related to the storyline. Just knew that a big earthquake happened and Gotham got separated from the rest of America. Totally went fine! I really don't think I was missing out on anything. And her Batgirl run is totally worth it, lol.
Jumping into something in the middle like that is always intimidating of course, so I wish you the best of luck either way.
yes yes of course ! i think i just needed more context as to how cass fit into the mythos but now that i've got that, i really want to dive in. i love her portrayal in everything i've read so far, and i think learning her origins will be super fun! and from what i've heard too, cass's run is a pretty self-contained story too, which is always my favourite type of comic run
she's also aapi representation and therefore, it really does feel wrong as an asian-identifying woman that i HAVEN'T read it yet. gonna finish steph's run first though but then definitely onto cass's run in terms of dc stuff i'm reading!
