"Katniss is Haymitch, just luckier"
Katniss gets reaped by Effie, Haymitch gets Drusilla
Katniss gets Cinna and the most iconic outfit in recent history, Haymitch got Magno
Katniss's chariot draws all eyes and sponsors, Haymitch's chariot kills his sweetheart
Katniss's rebellion scores her an 11, Haymitch's rebellion scores him a 1
Prim is loved by the capitol so Snow can't touch her, Sid's death is Haymitch's homecoming
And of course,
Katniss realizes the berries are poisoned before Peeta eats them
Haymitch feeds Lenore Dove the gumballs

“I squeeze my eyes shut and try to reach for him across the hundreds and hundreds of miles, to send my thoughts into his mind, to let him know he is not alone. But he is. And I can’t help him.” is an absolutely heartbreaking quote from Mockingjay stuck in my head tonight. 😫

I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.
Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.
Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.

I literally cannot overstate how important creative hobbies are when dealing with mental illness. If you can’t draw, there are coloring books. If you can’t write a novel, you can write in short journaling bursts. If you can’t sing in the shower, you can listen to music. Sometimes with mental illness it feels like we have this dark presence inside of us that is bumping around in our brain and organs, causing problems. It helps immensely to let it out.

to be clear, I would rather be hit by a propane truck than be famous, but I do sometimes wish I had the clout to propagate my opinions and analysis on everlark to the entire world

So i’m writing a sskk fic of BSD in the hunger games universe. Originally I was going to do a dual POV between atsushi and akutagawa with each individual chapter being written from a first person perspective with the POV alternating between them. But i’ve been seeing a lot of people say that they prefer third person fanfics way more. I would love a public opinion on which version people would be more eager to read/enjoy.

no one’s been able to write a truely strong FMC in a dystopian/fantasy novel since Katniss Everdeen. i fear every female lead now is characterized as a “warrior princess” but is just a pick me and needs their big, buff (heavy emphasis on the buff) MMC to save them in battle. suzanne collins was the only one able to write a badass female main lead who is so loving that she is strong because of that, and we don’t acknowledge that enough.

big big fan of how katniss’s most explicit declarations of love for peeta are not her saying she loves him but recognizing it through other people:

“annie is to finnick what peeta is to me” -> “finnick loves annie” -> “i love peeta”

“haymitch is different from everyone else here; because he loves peeta; because he’s like me”

"The Hunger Games are a reminder of what monsters we are and how we need the Capitol to keep us from chaos." TBOSAS Chapter 22: Coriolanus Snow
Katniss and Peetas act of rebellion with the night lock berries wasn’t just rejecting the game. It was rejecting the philosophy it created. Snow believed that humans are inherently selfish and driven by greed. The games showed the worst. Betrayal. Cruelty. Cowardice. However, instead of choosing survival at the cost of the other, they chose solidarity. Katniss and Peeta were proof of a humanity that Snow never believed in. Their actions reminded the people of Panem that the districts are human and that humans are good.

“I’d probably have gone quietly insane. It’s different for her. No one depends on Lenore Dove for their livelihood.”
“It’s true, his family doesn’t need him. They will mourn him, as will a handful of friends. But they will get on … I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.”
