The Elephant in the Room

Another drink,

Another place.

And to think

That this would erase

The elephant in the room.

Inside me there is a bloom --

Not a flower,

But a child.

My mouth is sour,

My mind gone wild.

What do I do about this life

That grows inside me?

Doctors offer the knife,

But should I flee

From the responsibility

Of becoming a mother?

His advice does not help me,

And this causes nothing but a bother.

Another drink,

Another place.

All I do is think

About this unborn face. (A few years ago, I wrote this poem for class. It’s probably my best poem ever written. It’s based on Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants.)
