ALBUM 6 FROM SPINDLEBONE COMING THIS FALL!
There are rumors of a concert going on in the overgrown, long abandoned estate at the edge of town.
They say it is not for the living.

Welcome back to our discussion of Spindlebone's new album, The Haunted Drive-In! If you're following along this is post 3 of 15 and tonight we're talking about Witch World! This was actually the first single from the album, released Friday, September 13th, 2024. The whole of this album is structured around the narrative of an all night horrorthon. In Welcome To The Haunted Drive-In we've arrived, been welcomed in and given instruction as to the nature of the evening's proceedings. We've also been shown where to find our refreshing beverages and tasty snacks. With Virtually No Distortion, we've put the speaker in the window, adjusted to its levels, gotten comfy, if slightly wary, and now we're ready for the first feature to begin... Witch World! An extraordinary journey into the unknown awaits you! The music is intended to sound something like a roiling cauldron whirling through space, bubbling and popping a beat backed by the deep bass rhythms of something distorted in the darkness drumming. The samples welcoming, but ominous, sinister, but encouraging, directing you to tune into this wild energy and use it to become a power, a force beyond what you are now. The beauty in the image is Yantry. She's the face of Spindlebone, seen here donning her 'space witch' attire, an elegant homage to the Flatwoods Monster, one of our favorites. We're glad to have you with us tonight! This is our most popular song at the moment and we hope that you will help make it even more so! If you enjoy what we do here, tell a fiend! Join us next time for our second feature, Death Curse Surf II! And as always, thank you for choosing Spindlebone!

Welcome back to our discussion about Spindlebone's new album, The Haunted Drive-In! We're glad to have you with us tonight! Now I said in the last post that we would be speaking of something distinctly American in the most wholesome way possible. Yes, the drive-in! The first partial drive-in was in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1915 and the first patented drive-in as we have come to know it was Hollingshead and opened June 6, 1933 in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey. Early drive-in theaters had to deal with sound issues. The original New Jersey drive-in had speakers installed on the tower itself, which caused a sound delay affecting patrons at the rear of the drive-in's field. In 1935, the Pico Drive-in Theater attempted to solve this problem by having a row of speakers in front of the cars. In 1941, RCA introduced in-car speakers with individual volume controls which solved the noise pollution issue and provided satisfactory sound to drive-in patrons. The exact number of companies that ended up making these speakers is hard to determine due to the niche nature of the market and the fact that many smaller manufacturers may not have left extensive records. However, RCA and Clark were the dominant players, with others filling in regional or specialized roles. By the 1970s, as drive-ins began to decline, the market for in-car speakers also dwindled, and many of these companies either shifted focus or went out of business. And? And, in a 1920 interview with The American Magazine, that ol' bastard Edison mentioned the idea of a "spirit phone," but there is no evidence that he ever built or seriously pursued such a device. This idea, however, has fueled myths and speculation about inventors of the era being involved in paranormal research. In the 70's and 80's, The Spiricom operated on the idea that spirits could manipulate electronic signals and audio frequencies to produce voices. The device used a series of tone generators to create a range of frequencies, which were said to correspond to the "vibrational levels" of spirits. According to Meek and O'Neil, its inventors, spirits could use these frequencies to modulate their voices and communicate through the device. The result was supposed to be clear, intelligible speech from the deceased. It inspired later attempts to create devices for electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and spirit communication, such as the Spirit Box and other tools used in modern paranormal investigations. So? So I thought, if we're at a haunted drive-in, the in-car speakers should, at the very least, allow the dead to commune with you. The title of our next song promises Virtually No Distortion, but I would put the emphasis on the virtually. I enjoy sound. I enjoy noise. I love the way that horror culture has developed a mythic trope around glitching as an indication of the otherworldly. I love the often ominous sounds of technology breaking down. And I'm generally a great audience for when an Artist utilizes those sounds in music. Sometimes I like my music to sound like it's made of little tricks. Which brings us to our next offering. Virtually No Distortion, the second song on The Haunted Drive-In, is made with some gen-u-ine EVP's along with other voices and a heaping helping of crunchy and peculiar noises. If you're following along, this is post 2 of 15 and commentary is super appreciated. I'll be posting the link to the song from various platforms, but the whole album is available most places you would listen. And no need to wait around for me to get to the next song cuz this could take a little while to get through them all. Go have a listen! And, as always, thank you for choosing Spindlebone!

Happy Imbolc! Wow! That was a lot of politics, huh? Well, such is the world we live in as I return to tumblr after abandoning meta and tiktok FOR FUCKING EVER! Now, we're going to take a step away from that for just a moment to talk about something almost entirely apolitical, but distinctly American in the most wholesome sense of the word. Welcome To The Haunted Drive-In! In the next 15 posts I'm going to be talking a bit about Spindlebone and the new album, The Haunted Drive-In. Initially released as singles, the album was released in full at the winter solstice of 2024. This is my/Spindlebone's 4th album, following 2023's release of the debut, Beats In The Witch House, the sophomore album, THIS, and finally, the muso-philosophical contemplative thingamajig, Something About The World Is False. We'll be talking about those in future posts. When talking about my Art, I'm uncertain whether people online prefer detached, spooky me or just a dude me. I've chosen chaotic-personal me for this one apparently, so I hope you'll tolerate this me for just a moment more... Maybe I've told you the story of the garage sale and the werewolf mask and The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology and the copy of Fangoria with the missing cover... that's not for here. My love of all kinds of music runs deep. I've made countless mixtapes, CDs, and playlists. I've made music that I've recorded intermittently through my life, but I'd never considered myself a musician. I've made pieces to be considered for several of the independent films that I've worked on. To be real, most of it wasn't used. We did use a couple of small, but appropriate pieces on Headless. Of course, I directed that, sooo... anyway, I began Spindlebone as an experiment to see if I could produce music in the vein of some of my 'heroes'. I was fortunate enough, in my teenaged youth, to have been introduced to both Coil's Love's Secret Domain and Negativland's Escape From Noise one night while riding a copious amount of hallucinogens and either alone could've, but the combo deeply expanded my personal parameters of what music could be and do. In my elder youth, I was introduced to Tom Waits' Bone Machine, which served only to push me out further into the deep with all its clang, boom, and steam. At this stage of life, I listen to well over 100 new Artists a year, and if you think Y or Z or Pi has had some impact on me, you're likely correct, but we'd be here all day were I to list them. These three Artists are the ones that hold the heaviest influence over Spindlebone. I'll speak more of this later, but I don't want to overstay my welcome. This new album, The Haunted Drive-In, brings together my love of occult trance music and gothic psychedelia, samples from old horror movies, trailers, commercials, and the drive-in experience roundabout. The whole of the album is difficult to classify, blending industrial grit, tribal trance rhythms, and the ghostly echoes of horror’s golden age. The first song, Welcome To The Haunted Drive-In, is meant to feel akin to entering some phantasmal carnival that has only half materialized before us. The longer we stay, the more solid it becomes. Forgotten voices from the not so distant past guide us into a tenuous future filled with hot, buttered popcorn, smooth, rich ice cream, satisfying coffee, crispy corndogs, and delicious dread... but why stop there? You don't have to wait for the next tumblr post to move on to the next song! If you dig the experience, be so good as to drop us a comment and be sure to tell a fiend! So go on and pull on into one of our many available plots... er spots and get ready for an evening of horrific musical, moviecal entertainment! Remember, you've arrived here somehow... what's important is just to stay, to continue, like in a dream... and be sure to visit our concession stand! You're sure to find something to please you! We're glad you're with us this evening and we thank you for choosing Spindlebone! Enjoy the show!
