I can’t believe I even have to say this, but there has been a resurgence of people (especially on tiktok…) who seem to believe they can be both goth and conservative. The cognitive dissonance apparently is hitting, and they seem to not realize the inherent irony in this statement.

So let me just say, very clearly, that goth is political. It always has been and it always will be. Yes, it’s about the music, but it’s not just about the music. Much like punk, goth has political beliefs associated with it that I think some “tiktok goths” (for lack of a better term) don’t understand. Whether that comes from ignorance or just denial is another discussion.

Goth originated and evolved from punk, a political subculture, so it is inherently political. You cannot be conservative and goth. I would even argue that you cannot be liberal (in the political science use, NOT the colloquial use) and goth. Goth has a focus on anti capitalism, anti consumerism, anti racism, anti queerphobia, anti xenophobia. These do not align with the (American) conservative movement nor do they align with the (American) liberal movement. Goth is anti fascist.

dress pants, jeans (skinny or baggy, your choice), band tees, button down shirts, vests, suit jackets decorated with pins/safety pins/patches, chains, long trench coats, leather jackets, leather coats, turtlenecks, fishnet tops (under your shirts) (or not if you like), leather gloves, fishnet gloves, black fingerless gloves, black boots, could even wear platforms if you want, lots of belts, chain belts, spiked cuffs, spiked chokers. hopefully this gives you ideas

I will say—much of this is suited for cooler climates and if you’re living near the equator (like I am), I have very little advice for you. I have not yet figured out how to dress goth in the summer and I almost always revert to dressing fem, like a hippie, or going back to my lesbian roots (jorts).
