A few months ago I was blessed the chance to run on the big stage. Physically, it was not really tough for me BUT as you can see one false step and it's all over. I would best describe the #anw experience as feeling like a human rollercoaster. I have to say, I had a blast but it was bitter sweet because my wife and children were not able to attend. @sharmanexo was able to get my wife, @mrs.stokes on a video call and as I passed the first obstacle I looked down and saw her face and was instantly filled with utter joy. #tbt #2009 #Helsinki #Finland #wolverines #football #28 #RB After having a single season record of 47 TDs, over 2,000 yards rushing and over 4,000 all-purpose yards I thought I was going back to the CFL for sure. I agreed that if the CFL did not welcome me back, I would only play for the Wolverines If I came back to Europe. Needless to say, the CFL passed over me but a show hosted by Michael Irvine (Playmakers) had me as a finalist to make their program in FX. I didn't make that cut either so I came back to Finland to take my frustrations out on the Maple League. And the league was feeling wrath again until the 3rd game of the season. The good ol' Velodrome took a part of my knee from me on the 1st drive of the 3rd game. I went back in and limped for an 8.0 yard average and 50 more yards before I could no longer stand on my own. Surgery was required and my season was over as it just began. I stayed and coached as the OC for the reminder of the season, ending the season with 70 points put up on a team that beat us when I was injured in the game against them earlier in the season. That was it for football for 2009 but what happened off the field was much significant. I met the woman in the last photo here and my life changed forever. After spending the summer with the future Mrs. Stokes I was hooked. That story will be continued next week.. #StayTuned for highlights from the 1st 3 games of this season tomorrow. #tbt #2007 #Bergamo #Italy #NFLI With a year of #European #football experience under my belt, the recruiters from this side of the globe started coming after me. As flattering as that was, I heard one team's name over & over again as the place to be. I reached out to Bergamo & signed with them just after the new year. During my time with the Lions, I averaged 10.7 yards a carry & scored 5 #TDs in one game for the 1st time ever in my career. I also had to play #DB all season & in the first game I smacked a QB on the goal line so hard his helmet & teeth did not stay with him. The season was filled with drama, like an Italian #SoapOpera: A drunk coach that was fired only to be replaced by a coach that walked off the field & quit 20 minutes into his 1st practice. Countless ethical issues with the "so-called GM". I injured my foot in the playoffs to the point I could no longer walk. I was placed in an ambulance after the game & left alone to be taken to a hospital where no one spoke English & I had no way home. "Fortunately" a teammate of mine tore his MCL in the same game & happened​ to be in the same hospital. His dad was nice enough to give me a ride home. Plenty more I can ramble on about but in the end we still won the #Italian #SuperBowl. That season I had more return yards & TDs than the league has ever seen. I can not say I enjoyed my most of my time in Italy but it did show me my worth. This #International game can be life changing in both amazingly awesome & terribly terrible ways. #tbt #2006 #football #GFL 2 #Germany After being cut from the #CFL because of my "lack of speed" I turned all my focus to just that, #speed. @yourtemplefitness12_1 & I spent countless hours working on me & training young athletes as well. I'm​ forever grateful to Coach Wellington for all he taught & built with me. So, I went to another workout for the BC Lions & the results were the same. Outlasted everyone but my 40 still wasn't good enough. I was lost on where to go next. A few weeks later I get an email from a team asking if I wanted to come play in Germany. I said yes right away, with no due diligence at all. I was just ready to prove I could play. Didn't know the league, the colors of the team or any other important details like how I was gonna eat & I really didn't care. 2 emails was all I had & next thing I know I'm in Europe with zero clue on what to expect. Luckily, the Cougars ran a clean program. They took me in & gave me the chance no else had since my JV year is high school. To be "the guy" running​ the ball. I still think I had to prove it to myself that I could do it. I knew I wanted it, just don't all the way believe I was capable. That was until after my second game when the best defense in the league said trying to tackle me was like trying to tackle water. That was the moment Stephen "h2o" Stokes was born. That season I learned the world is bigger than America & my life changed forever. Thank you Lubeck, for opening me up to the world.
