To finally wrap things up, here is the final Creeptober Artwork. Originally, Slipped through the cracks would have appeared here in the original prompt list. But due to the layout of the prompt list, I accidentally switched the two. But what the heck. After all, 31 artworks are 31 artworks - no matter in which order. So Just behind the Corner is a Hound of Tindalos. These hellhounds have been described to me as dimension-shifting, misshapen, disturbing creatures that always ambush their victims around the next corner. Once again on point for the prompt x3 And so Inktober comes to an end. A little late, but complete. Must do this more often with such themes. Lovecraft's more abstract descriptions in particular give such artistic license with these critters. It was a lot of fun to give each of these creatures their own touch ^^
Big thanks to @creep-tober for the awesome challenge. Really enjoyed this one ^___^

Day 30 took a longer than I had expected, but I wanted to get the colorful window done properly. And now that the general time pressure has eased a little, I just took advantage of it.
Shortly before the end, we arrived at the Library of Celaeno. As the name suggests, the library is located on a planet orbiting the star Celaeno. Stuffed with old writings and books that the Elder Gods miss with gradually decreasing enthusiasm. Once again, Lovecraft has left us plenty of room for artistic license with his minimal description. He talks about monolithic pillars, enormous size and a huge, round window. I also thought a bit more about the window. The center represents Azathoth, the spheres surrounding him a collection of outer gods - each with their own symbol. It's also the only picture where I've actually done a bit more digital processing - see the light effect ;)

Day 29 - we're a bit behind schedule, but we'll get the last two days together ;) In any case, Randolph Carter gets a third appearance in this challenge for today - or a fourth, depending on whether we count the file on Thomas' desk ;) Since the good man is an antiquarian bookseller, it was a good idea to put him on the scene again. Along with a pile of problematic books. The Necronomicon and the King in Yellow on top. Carter simply has a special talent for riding himself into shit stuffed with tentacle monsters - deep enough that he's probably lost somewhere in dreamlands by the end.

Well, that brings us to the end of Creeptober 2024! Thanks and congratulations to everyone that participated; I hope you all had fun. And thanks too to everyone who left likes, comments, or reblogs on people's art! That really can make an artist's day.
For those of you who couldn't participate this year because of work, time issues, general existential dread, etc., please, by all means go back to any of my old prompt lists any time you want a challenge or a bit of inspiration. (2022 - 2023 - 2024) Use the whole list to do the month when you've got time, mix and match prompts that inspire you, whatever! By all means @ me as well; I'd love to see what you come up with, and it would be nice to give this sideblog some use in the off-season.
I look forward to seeing what you all make next year!

We're almost at the end of the Creeptober Challenge, but I don't think I can fully avoid addressing the elephant in the room when it comes to Lovecraft . While H P Lovecraft had an outstanding talent for storytelling and we have him to thank for all this fantastic verse, for which a Poe would have patted him on the back appreciatively, there is unfortunately also the latent disgust for anything alien and strange-looking that lurks far too often in his stories - especially where the inhabitants of Innsmouth are concerned, the allegory is painfully clear. All the more reason I felt the need to give the Innsmouth family - who once again fit the Prompt like a bespoke jigsaw piece - a little twist, contrary to the plot usually played out in a human/Deep One relationship. The lady is the Deep One, not the man, there's no gruesome mating ritual or anything going on and we just have a happy little family that happens to fit the Innsmouth look.

Today's prompts were "fright" and "slipped through the cracks". Happy Halloween, everyone! I'm taking "how immediately I got a good and workable idea for this" as one of my treats.
I'm using the prompts from @plaguefairy and @creep-tober. My progress thread for this piece can be found here.

Creeptober 31 - Slipped Through the Cracks
Cover for the Sunset Archives chapter 25 - Looking Back
Statement of Jonathan Sims-Blackwood, former Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, regarding his life, death, apotheosis, death, and subsequent misadventures.
"I wish I could say that the Web had puppeted me into it, but that would be a lie. No doubt it engineered the situation, at least in part, but my actions were all my own doing. I knew what had to be done, but I lacked the strength to do it. So I begged Martin to finish the plan."

Today's prompts were "glow" and "library". The concept for this piece came easily and I got started working on it early; which is good, because I needed all that time to figure out angles and proportions for all the objects here.

Creeptober 30 - Library
Illustration of the story 'Losing Track of Time' from the Doctor Who Short Trips collection A Universe of Terrors
"Jo ran, seeking out the yellow line on the floor in the half light. She turned, left, right, right again and came up hard against a wall of black tomes as tall as the Brigadier's biggest atlas. Faint light shone on the gilded titles on the spine. Peterborough Echo, Jul-Dec, 1907 She looked down to see the yellow line disappear straight under the impenetrable shelving. Whirling round, she found more volumes of newspapers cutting off the path she'd just followed. Everything had been twisted around her. What was it the Doctor had been saying about time? That it was all the same as space or something? A chill shook Jo, freezing the sweat trickling down her spine. If these Tynakar creatures couldn't confuse her perceptions of time, it certainly looked as if they could mess with the space around her. The sound of stealthy feet and a breathy hiss somewhere off to her left drove all such thoughts out of her mind…"

Today's prompts were "view" and "antique". I keep having ideas that rely on drawing an environment with lots of stuff in it, when I have no idea what kind of stuff would be in said environment. Which you'd think wouldn't be so much of an issue, because most of them are set in places where I've actually been to somewhere like that, but apparently I've never properly LOOKED at them, because I keep forgetting an they're something I'd draw.

I already teased on Day 2 that this wouldn't be the last time Rocketbeans' brilliant pen and paper RPG triology "Tor nach Carcosa" would make an appearance in this Creeptober. In this case, I'm also going back to the first campaign - to be precise, to one of my personal favorite scenes, the artwork of Frau von Stockhausen. Once again I can just recommend this awesome RPG Round. If you are able to understand German, please do go ahead and give it a try. Gorgeous story, brilliant GM and the players and their acting talent truely are impressive!

Creeptober 29 - Antique
MAG 38: Lost and Found
"And then came the moment when everything had been disgorged. I saw all the things that I had lost, and I thought it must be over. It must be done. What else could possibly come of there? And I saw the pale shapes of long, thin fingertips begin to creep above the lip of the pot. I remember thinking that it couldn’t be a normal person living in that pot, because the fingernails were too dirty. Isn’t that an odd thing to think at a time like that?"

Today's prompts were "cast" and "passion project". I had lots of ideas for this one, and early on too; the problem was that I wasn't able to visualize any of them.

Creeptober 28 - Passion Project
Cover for the Sunset Archives 2 chapter 8 - Stitched Up
Statement of Rarity Belle, regarding a shipment of fabrics.
"No, the fabrics began it.
They arrived on November 8th, along with a rather exacting commission for a gown, black with red crinoline and embroidered with intricate designs in silver, intricate enough that machine stitches simply wouldn’t do. Ordinarily, we would have simply refused the commission and suggested they try a more upscale store, had it not been for two things.
First, the client -- a Mrs. Penelope Gate -- did not commission the store. They named me, specifically. There was a paragraph spent lauding my skills, implying that this project could be the making of my career. It was odd, but I am scarcely immune to flattery, and the idea of someone noticing my skill -- well! I kept a copy of the letter in my bedroom. I had plans to frame it, once the project was completed; now… now I look forward to burning the thing.
Secondly, and not to sound crass, but the price they offered to pay for the project was eye-popping. So, after some deliberation, I accepted. Pride and greed, the downfall of entire empires…"

Now that we've already kneaded through a good part of the better-known Lovecraft Panteon here, one of the greatest calibres of the Outer Gods should not be missing from this challenge. The good old Demonsultan Azathoth. Alongside the King in Yellow, he's the eldritchhorror deity I've drawn most often so far - although this is the first time I've drawn him in colour. Finding the right colours was a real challenge. In the end, I tried to orientate myself on the colour scheme of a black hole. Not least because in my headcanon he literally simply is the supermassive black hole bobbing around in the centre of our galaxy - albeit with fewer teeth :)

Today's prompts were "boil" and "loving the monster". I struggled with what to draw for this one, until I realized I could merge both of my "they'd each work, but they're not quite good enough" ideas into one piece; you can be cuddling with your monster bgoyrlfriend AND holding your angry not-cat at the same time. (I don't know how this ended up as a card; it just seemed to make sense.)
