Civilization type V on Kardashev's scale. Worldbuilding galaxies, terraforming star systems and repairing planet machinery. Be warned - here be monsters, spirits, humans and general silliness.
Want to work on a good expression sheet for styraphants but got distracted drawing flustered flirting. Also decided they talk through rumbling air within an inflatable sack in their chest! It's also how they blush because how cute.
So I've read recently on writing disabled characters.
And author of the post was like "no, don't give people the cure for all disabilities for a number of reasons".
Well, I have thought for a while, so here is the thing:
If I ever going to write about something like that, I will give my characters choice in a matter how to go about their disability. Either they can use a magical aid which will make their life easier but it doesn't make whatever their disability is to disappear completely.
OR they can get fully cured. °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
But there is a catch.
Of course there is, since nothing is free, right? (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
So process is approximately like this: you go to the temple of a certain goddess, where you are given a dog (in fact, you can go and choose any that strikes your fancy - they have a lot since they also run animal shelters). Don't like dogs? ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯ Sure, here is a kitty! Horse person? We have this ones too. Rabbits? Birds? Reptiles? Sure thing! Allergy ? Not a problem - animals are magically prepared for their new role so you won't get allergic. ( ´ ∀ `)ノ~ ♡
You will be given some time to see if you go well together or not.
When you both get well-adjusted to each other, your next appointment will be in 6-12 months.
And during this next appointment you must kill this animal. With your own hand. °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°°˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°°˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
Yes, in case if you can't due to healthy issues, another person can do it for you. Like, ideally a family member (by choice or by blood), but friends will also do.
Now, how many people will be able to kill their new fluffy friend in cold blood? I'm sure there will be people who will be able to do this and those who won't. And to be fair, I think most won't.
See what I did here? /╲/\╭(ఠఠ益ఠఠ)╮/\╱\
Good! Now go and write horrible, soulcrashing choices.
There is a specific and terrifying difference between “never were” monsters and “are not anymore” monsters
“The thing that was not a dog” implies a creature which mimics a dog but imperfectly and the details which are wrong are what makes it terrifying
“The thing that was not a dog anymore” on the other hand implies a thing that USED to be a dog before it was somehow mutated, possessed, parasitically controlled or reanimated improperly and what makes THAT terrifying is the details that are still right and recognizable poking out of all the wrong and horrible malformations.
hey I totally fucked up and forgot the 3rd type, which is “Is Not Anymore And Maybe Never Was” monsters
“The thing which was no longer a dog and maybe never was” implies a creature that, at first glance, completely appears to be a dog, but over time degrades very slowly until you realize (probably too late) that it is not a dog anymore, and had you seen it in this state first, you wouldn’t have recognized it as a dog at all, and there’s a decent chance that it was never actually a dog to begin with but only a very good mimic, and what makes this one scary is the slow change from everything being right to everything being wrong, happening slowly enough that you don’t even notice it until its too late, as well as the fact that something now so clearly not a dog could have fooled you to begin with.
And the fourth type, which is, “I dunno, but it sure ain’t a dog.” Which implies complete confusion about what the creature could be, to the point that even a person as comfortable in this world as someone who would use the word ain’t unironically is uncertain, which should horrify you to the deepest depths of your soul.
Don’t forget the fifth type, the “that’s a weird looking dog”, implying that while the creature has an appearance that slips beyond our ken, that raises the tiny hairs at the back of our necks and limbs, that makes our lungs rattle and hearts constrict… personality-wise, it is a good boy/girl. Somehow.
what sort of society wide structural accommodations would you like to see in place to help/make more accessible for little people?
Aaaaah this ask is so old now I'm so sorry!! (Things can get lost among all the hate messages lol) But gosh so many things!!
• The first is step stools EVERYWHERE!!! Public access to step stools would solve most of the problems little people face with access. I'm talking bathrooms, service desks, cash registers, libraries, clothing stores - the list goes on! They could fold away for easy access, or blend in as universal design.
There's even these amazing fold up ones I've seen that get automatically tucked away to prevent tripping hazards:
The second is for grab bars such as these (see bellow) for easier toilet access to be more widespread. It's important that toilets remain the height parallel with the average wheelchair, but grab bars can make it much easier for shorter people to hoist.
Public bathroom/change room stalls that go close to/all the way to the floor! As a little person, the average stall door ends at my waist (sometimes higher) so I am not guaranteed privacy. I much prefer stalls with minimal viewing access. And as a trans person, stalls that are more private create added safety.
I would love for extended grabbing handles to be standard practice in vehicles!
These would make getting in and out of cars much easier for a little person, not to mention elderly folks, children, and other disabled people. Extra foldable steps in cars is also something I've seen and loved.
Adjustable foot hammocks on public desks and tables would be sooo goood! A big source of leg pain for me is that my legs are dangling in every chair I sit in, which cuts off circulation and semi-dislocates my loose joints. Some sort of ledge or hammock would solve this issue.
I'm sure there are many more but this is what comes to mind for now!
