Having some spare time between my new job and finishing up projects, I did this commission for @dermankey .  They wanted Mermista from Netflix’s She-Ra in a mermaid form that’s a composite of her various outfits.  Pretty pleased with how this came out (so was the commissioner).  Though I’m not actively taking commissions at the moment, you are welcome to DM me to see if I’m available to do one.  I will share my prices as well as a list of dos and don’ts.  For a frame of reference, this piece cost $18.

Sephiroth Fighter Pass Review

Honestly, Sephiroth’s kinda boring. I shredded through his boss rush classic mode with only a few back and forward aerials (sans Ganon and 1st phase Dracula). Surprised they didn’t play One Winged Angel for his credits music, but was pleasantly surprised they used his original art from FFVII instead of his model, though Cloud didnt get original art (yet). I mean, I’m sure some will find him fun, but since I’m not really a big Final Fantasy fan, nor an often player on Smash multiplayer, I probably won’t be playing him again. He seems a good character all around, but just boring to me.

The Sephiroth challenge was pretty interesting. I was able to beat it on normal after countless tries, fueled only by my anger after I was beaten by pummel several times. A nice little change of pace from previous fighter inclusions, and I’d like to see it again if we get another villain in this pass.

Let’s see, music. Not sure which was more surprising: Squenix allowing more than one song added, allowing some to be remixed, or both happening. The songs are fine, catchy, good for Smashing, allows Midgar to have some more variety. One Winged Angel is indeed a bop. Interestingly, some of the songs are listed coming from Advent Children, which is technically an animated film closely related to a video game, which makes it the first non-video game to have music in the game.

Northern Cave is definitely visually interesting and a very neat concept, but the name is so bland. Like, this is the location of the game’s final boss, right? Instead of something intimidating like Death Mountain or End of the World, it’s just called Northern Cave. Like, that’s not even really a name, it’s just telling where the cave is located. Still, pretty neat looking stage.

My hope for spirts is at least the main playable party, and maybe Chocobo and Cactaur for good measures. I also hope they use original art from VII, because it actually has a really nice style and coloring to it. Furthermore, I hope they update Cloud’s fighter spirit to his original artwork as well, just to round it out.

The Mii costumes...the main cast is cool, Chocobo hat is fun, and Geno...listen, I’m still in camp “Mii costumes don’t deconfirm”. I will hold onto this hope until the day the Fighters’ Pass ends this time next year. Is it a pipe dream? Most likely. Will Geno get in? Maybe. We just have to see.

Overall, Sephiroth brought in cool music, a cool stage, a cool mode, a cool classic mode, cool costumes, and hopefully cool spirits...and yet didn’t make himself that cool a character for me. Personally, I wasn’t to hyped hyped for his debut, again I’m not a big FF fan, so after seeing what he comes with, I feel more thankful that Final Fantasy finally has some more representation in this game then it did back in Sm4sh,

So. *clap* Update.

First off, the Trump jokes. I mean, they were okay, I guess, if you find jokes about Trump and Russia involvement still funny in 2020. The one I’m more focused on is portraying the cyclops as Trump, which was...probably the most neutral I’ve felt on anything ever, not even jokes. Yeah, the impression sounded like Trump but not over the top like most others, jokes were made at expense of his tan and wealth, but they weren’t as worse as what I’ve seen. The scene wasn’t funny, but it wasn’t exactly unfunny either. Just sorta...happened, I guess. Aside from that though any other references were pretty small, which kinda surprised me. They even glossed over his first lady when Dot sung about all the first ladies. Overall, I’m glad it wasn’t drowned out in political jokes; yes, the classic series had political jokes, but they were also done well for the most part. The ones in the reboot...eh, just okay.

Anyways, about series and the future with the extended cast. First off, love the new series, original was still better, but I wasn’t expecting it to. The Warner’s segments are good, and while I think Pinky and the Brain’s are the best, minus one or two, they’re a bit hit and miss with use of modernity (Brain spending the past 22 years creating modern internet culture? Great. Setting is a fidget spinner factory? No.).  Intro’s the same old tune, though it’s a bit odd to hear different lyrics, and I love the style of the PatB intro. Overall, fun series, good reboot, Wakko says “Hell”. 8/10

Of particular note, however, is the fifth episode, “Good Warner Hunting”. Probably my favorite so far, due to its execution and partly soothing my worries involving the extended cast. In that episode, a hunter (revealed to be Chicken Boo of all people) has been hunting the rest of the supporting cast to mount them on his walls (they’re fine in the end, don’t worry). Aside from just being a fun episode with a great ending shot of all the supporting cast chasing after Chicken Boo, it shows the writers are aware of the importance of the supporting cast to the show. I mean, Yakko laments at the beginning that it seems like they’re doing most of the heavy lifting(I’d argue PatB moreso). What’s more, is apparently both the showrunners and voice actors have mentioned wanting to bring more of the original cast back for season two and further beyond if they get more seasons, and I think that’s what this reboot needs. It needs that variety the original had; the occasional break from the zany-to-the-max Warners and world-conquering mice for the slightly more grounded Slappy Squirrel, or, hey, even the more ridiculous escapades of Chicken Boo. This would especially help since, in some of the latter episodes they introduced these sketchy shorts that were...not that good. The alien one was fine, but the girl’s audio sounded odd and off for whatever reason, and the gnome one was just...terribly random. It made no real sense at all, and not in a good way. I’m glad they’re trying new ideas, I want to see that, but maybe have them cook a bit longer before showing them off. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to have the original cast back; I mean, their ensemble silent cameo was enough to make the episode one of the best so far, so why not.

TL;DR -- The reboot was not bogged down politically, Trump jokes were bizarrely neutral, series is good, needs improvement, I wanna see Slappy again.

The Animaniacs reboot is gonna suffer greatly from the lack of Slappy in it. I mean, she was one of the, what I consider, big three of Animaniacs, alongside obviously the Warners and Pinky and the Brain; she could have very easily gotten her own spin off much like PatB had she been just as popular.

Even removing personal bias, the reboot seems to lacking content-wise. Aside from the already shoe-in confirms of the Warners and PatB, we have maybe the Goodfeathers returning…and that’s it. Rita & Runt are definitely out since Bernadette Peters is still too expensive and their shorts didnt even last past the first season because of that, Minerva Mink is out cause she only got two shorts, and Slappy’s out for the kinda silly reason of her creator and VA Sherri Stoner not being on the reboot’s writing team. That leaves Katie Ka-Boom, Chicken Boo, Buttons & Mindy, and the previously mentioned Goodfeathers as the (substantial) shorts left up in the air. Keep in mind it’s a big, BIG if if any of these shorts make a return, and keep in mind only the Goodfeathers has the slightest confirmation of their return.

So, that leaves the reboot withe the line up of the Warners, Pinky and the Brain, and a “maybe” for the Goodfeathers…to be honest, I ain’t liking this chief. Sure, both the Warners and PatB shorts can easily support the show on their own, heck PatB could support its own show. But this is a reboot of Animaniacs which, at its core, was a variety show. There was a reason an entire section of the original theme was dedicated to naming the other shorts on the show. If all we’re switch between on the reboot is the Warners and PatB, things are gonna get stale real fast (and, really, who remembers Animaniacs for the Goodfeathers?) I don’t care if they’re gonna add new shorts or not; I just hope they do add more shorts, because the one thing I fear more than this show reusing the same three Trump jokes is a lack of content.

TL;DR – I like how Animaniacs 2020 is looking but it really needs some more meat if it’s gonna stand on its own.

Ya know, I wonder if there’s any significance behind the mute forms the characters can transform into, specifically with Amelia and her walrus form. Sure she was out in the ocean so a walrus was readily available, but certainly there could have been other water based animals to chose from. Is there some kind of symbolism behind a walrus? I only as this cause it seems rather odd and random compared to the more commons monkey form with Song and jaguar form with Kipo.
