Aladdin And His Wonderful Lamp In Rhyme
Arthur Ransome
Thomas Mackenzie
3/5
Read Time: within a day
This book is the original Chinese story of Aladdin, written in rhyme and beautifully illustrated. It is not a book for serious readers, and is probably aimed more towards a juvenile audience.
It deviates massively from the Disney version that everyone is used to, however that is most definitely not a criticism. A major criticism I have is that because of the era when this was written, there is questionable and racist language.
I enjoyed reading it and I’m glad I did but it was nothing spectacular in terms of fairy tales and children’s stories.

Women Who Made History - Joan of Arc
Regine Pernoud
2/5
Read Time: 13 days
This book was full of interesting back stories to the people who were deeply involved in Joan of Arc’s life, as well as the full history of her story.
It was written in the 60s and a lot of the references the author uses to help to reader understand are to do with WW2, as it was only 20 years prior to the book. Modern readers however would feel left out, as the references are meant to help them understand feelings and emotions experienced by those who had lived through the war.
It was also written more as a reference book of the Trial of Rehabilitation and Joan’s actual trial itself more than a historical non-fiction book. For that reason it is quite hard to get into, but still entertaining non the less.

My little reading corner and what’s currently on my shelves.
I’ve been in a massive reading rut since last year, to the point where I didn’t read a single book for the whole of 2020, so my mission this year was to rectify this.
One of my big problems was choosing what book to read, so my system this year was to fill my bookshelves, and then use a random number generator to choose my book for me.

“People say hate is a wasted emotion, a destructive force you can do nothing useful with. They’re wrong. I’ve gripped rage, I’ve wielded it like a weapon.”
— Laura Purcell, from The Corset
