Tourette's Awareness Month - Day 2: Keywords

Complex tic: when multiple muscle groups are used, multiple words (e.g., throwing something)

Premonitory urge: a very uncomfortable sensation (a build up of energy, electric/fiery/bubbling/tickling/crawling) that builds up before a tic. Not everyone experiences this and it doesn't happen before every tic.

Suppressing: the act of 'holding in' tics, often increasing the premonitory urge and making them worse later. Not everyone can suppress and it can only be done for so long. People may do it to avoid judgement, for safety.

Coprolalia: a socially inappropriate vocal tic (e.g., swearing, a slur)

Copropraxia: a socially inappropriate motor (physical) tic (e.g., 🖕)

Echolalia: vocally repeating other people's words or sounds, can also extend to animal sounds

Echopraxia: physically repeating others actions

Waxing: a period of increased frequency or intensity of tics, or a flare up

Waning: a period of decreased tic frequency/intensity

Tic attack: a highly intense period of constant, often intense, tics, completely uncontrollable and unstoppable

Trigger: something that sets off a person's tics or a particular tic

Dystonic tics: slower tics, abnormal posture or straining of a body part

Blocking tics: a tic which takes away a person's ability to move/speak

There are definitely more but these are a good handful!

different kinds of tics

Tics can divided into few categories: simple/complex and motor/vocal.

Motor tics are movements. Examples: blinking, shoulder shrugging, making faces or gestures, etc.

Vocal tics are sounds. Examples: meowing, barking, saying words or sentences, whistling, etc.

sometimes it can be hard to differentiate between them. I have a tic in which i click my tongue. It is a movement, but there is also a sound to it. I'm not sure whether it's the movement or the sound that makes the pre-tic tension go away.

Complex tics involve a lot of different muscles. They can appear as something done intentionally, but they are never intentional. Examples: saying words or frazes, making gestures, jumping, grimacing, etc

Simple tics are quick, and, well, simple. Examples: winking of an eye, tensing of a specific muscle, sniffing, simple "woo", or a similar sound, etc

Different types of tics can feel very different. They may alleviate the pre-tic tension in different ways. For example i need to hear the whistle in order for the tension to disappear, but I don't need to hear my meowing for the tension to go away.

I may not even notice some of my simple motor tics. but sometimes there is a big cumulation of them and it's awful. Some of the more complex ones feel like i'm being controlled by some alien life force or sth. And some of my complex tics are chill, and idc. It really depends on the day, on what I'm doing and what my tics are at the moment.

Me when we’re about to walk into a small coffee shop with coffee, smoothies, pastries, etc. but then my brother decides that we need to go to a “real” coffee shop, so now we’re stuck in said “real” coffee shop, in which I couldn’t consume anything within the premises without a hospital visit.

Help. I’m looking for a game, it is(was?) on steam, and I played it like two years ago. It was a horror game, and I’m fairly certain the picture (cover? Whatever) was a box(?) with like, green lines on it? Not sure. The mechanics were very similar to those, like, hoods escape games? But it was spookier. I don’t remember a ton, just that I was locked in a cabin, and also a man(?) and I had to use puzzles and reflections and shit to escape, but then once I was outside I had to escape the forest, but it was like a maze, and there was a map I was supposed to memorize which I only remember because it took me like…an hour just to escape the forest, because I kept forgetting what the map looked like. And I don’t remember a lot, but there was a dead deer in my way at some point, and I also think I was crazy.

Did this actually exist or am I insane? And if it did, does anybody know what it was called? I just remember the name was not very memorable, but also that it didn’t really have anything to do with the actual storyline. Also the art was pretty cool, but not in any describable way, as someone who doesn’t know anything.

Please help. I’m plagued with visions.

Looking for a random post I saw on Pinterest like two years ago. Can’t remember if it was an Au or not, but it was very much giving scooby doo. It was about a group of ghost and mystery solving friends who go into haunted places to figure stuff out except the punchline is that they have a different hire that stays in the van unless shit goes off the rails because he doesn’t believe in ghosts so hard that it makes them physically (spiritually?) unable to be around him. So whenever things go extra super bad they call him in and the ghosts just vanish, and he’s like “see? Yall are so dumb, clearly there aren’t any ghosts, they don’t even exist” and then once he leaves the ghosts can come back.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about or have I just not slept in days?

As my contribution to pride month (for the three people that are going to read this post) I would like to promote and laud Joey Contreras’s musical, In Pieces. (Yes, I have talked about this musical on here before, but I will do it again, as many times as I need to)

This musical tackles several different types of relationships and how those can affect you. Aside from the overt connection to pride month through the story of Charlie and Grey, two teenage boys struggling to understand their sexualities and their feelings for each other (my pookies) and the very queer connotations of the character River, it should also be acknowledged that Joey Contreras is a queer man himself, married to fellow singer and actor, Jared Zirilli, and has stated multiple times to have incorporated many of his own experiences into the musical.

Additionally, as the musical tackles the effects of multiple relationships, it shows multiple intentionally relatable experiences, which can be spread across many different forms of life and stages of it. As an asexual, it is often very difficult for me to find romantic and/or relationship focused media that I, personally, can connect to, but this musical really bridges that gap for me.

In Pieces released an official concert film just this week (still available for another day or two, I think) that you should definitely think about getting if you are into this kind of thing. It’s got a stellar cast, and that’s not even to mention the incredible compositions, not just the musicality itself, but also the lyricism and incredible use of motif.

Anyway, thought I would pop on just to contribute to pride month just a tad, and also plug one of my favorite musicals.

Well, turns out external validation is all I need to get motivated to revive a project from almost four years ago, and I finished outlining part one of my HoO rewrite. Fr, if anyone has actual interest in this fic, let it be known, cause I might give up again if I get bored unless there are people actually interested.

And if anyone’s really interested, I can post on here with snippets of the fic, info about the characters, maybe even one-shots if anyone would like that.

We’re not going to see Lenore’s spectre for a while, probably not until another finale of some sort, but I think I know how it’ll manifest.

I’m, like, so sure it’ll happen the “first” time (in death-canon) that Lenore and Annabel Lee kiss.
