Do you like pets?

-> We do. Please bring pictures. Especially if your pet is being goofy!

But I am really shy with new people...

-> You can lurk. You can just write. You can also come to the server and witness pure insanity.

What if I am not good enough?

-> There's no such thing! Are you having fun? Then that's more than good enough. Don't let the inner saboteur hold you back from being creative and having fun!

100 words? Really?

-> Yes really. Buuuuut, there are no limits to your creativity. You are welcome to write your magnus opus! Go wild, do what feels right!

What if I don't like the artist?

-> As long as you adhere to the DNW and MH, you don't have to have any contact with the artist.

But isn't that lonely?

-> Well, nobody said you cannot form a life-long friendship with your artists and fellow authors. We're yapping incessantly. Nobody has to be lonely here.

Can you give us a sneaky inside scoop?

We can now confidently say that, with over 200 arts in the galleries, we have something for everyone.

Let's go through the main arguments in favour of a sign-up again, shall we?

You only have to write 100 words per claim.

You can claim as many arts as you can write 100 words for.

Your drabble doesn't have to be narrative prose...or anywhere near finished (the real treat is the friendships made along the way).

You can come back to your fics later and continue.

Every art can be claimed thrice, so you don't have to lose out on your fave.

We have a discord where you can exchange thoughts, puns, and cursed ideas with the artists and your fellow writers.

The arts are really cool...and so are the artists. (But what if it's all those weird, flammable, stabby Elves from that Frankensteined book? It's not, we promise. We have LOTR, we have Hobbit, we have less-known books, we have very open prompts.)

S&D has a long-ish timeline, you'll have time to completely lose your mind and be enabled encouraged to write much more than you'd planned to write.

There is no bar to reach other than your own enjoyment (while respecting MH and DNW of artists). You don't have to speak to the artist. You don't have to speak to us. Just write, post, disappear again if that's your desire.

We have a full buffet of funny, heartbreaking, and/or ludicrous prompts. From deep-felt gen to questionable explicit, we have all your heart could desire...

You can sign up and not claim, so you might just want to do this to be safe and stave off the FOMO.

All in all, Scribbles and Drabbles is a laid-back, low-pressure, high-fun event. If you want to spend the summer holidays with friends, sipping ice-cold drinks and talking about blorbos leisurely...

Hi, I have a question about submitting art. Can I submit cosplay pics that I posted only on my private instagram account and only a handful of people saw, most of them not in the fandom?

Greetings!

Per our FAQs, under the question "Can I submit something I posted secretly somewhere else?", art that has been shared to a small, private group is able to be submitted for either what we would consider new to the fandom or older art pieces. Cosplay photos would count as art.

We're back for another year! Come join us for the fifth installment of Scribbles & Drabbles!

Sign-ups will open on June 1 for both artists and authors, so be on the look-out for that!

Further important dates include:

Please make sure to familiarise yourself with the rules (General FAQs and Art Slide Information Guide (mostly relevant to artists)) before signing up. Changes have been made this year, so even if you have previously participated, read through them so you are aware.

A summary of the rule changes is provided below the cut, but check the website anyway, especially if you haven't participated before.

Artists:

New artists may submit up to 5 pieces (7 if they are creating their own slides)

Returning artists may submit up to 8 pieces (10 if they are creating their own slides)

If you request a moderator to create your slides, the background will be full black, blue or white, depending on what the moderator thinks gives the best contrast to your art.

You are reminded that the minimum word count is 100 words, and that your MHs must be short enough to fit into 100 words. We recommend to focus on 3 items that are especially important to you. If your MHs are a full drabble by themselves, you may be asked to amend them.

Keep in mind that art is intended to inspire authors, not to find a ghostwriter for your ideas.

For relationship and character suggestions, we recommend adhering to the tags as given on AO3 (/ for romantic/sexual relationships, & for platonic relationships, + for queer-platonic relationships (and all others outside of established norms)). Please also stick to the common given names of all characters instead of nicknames to make it easier for those who are new to the fandom to find characters they care about.

Authors:

We have clarified what is and isn't allowed when artists do not post their works publicly. With the artist's permission, you may embed their art in your story on AO3. You may not post the art on other platforms. If the artist does not agree to have the art embedded, link to the gallery directly.

You are reminded that if you do not think you can adhere to the artist's DNWs and MHs, you should not claim the art.

I. Eyes upon me

Éowyn crossed the halls followed by her reports, their armor shining silver and copper. None were lost on the latest expedition, which was a stroke of relief to all. 

As Chief Commander, cleansing the Morgul Vale amounted to a large part of her duties after the fall of the Shadow. Despite being vanquished, the mark of its claws still lingered over the land and pockets of ruthlessness yet clamored an allegiance to their former lord and master, wreaking havoc on the borders.

Fatigue wore down her muscles but her mind stayed sharp as Éowyn and her captains met with king and council. Emissaries had come, as they regularly did, to convene on ways to aid the efforts of Gondor, and even as she delivered her report the commander felt eyes upon her. 

Of course, this was nothing new—she’d gained quite the reputation, after all. 

But one gaze lingered among many, and from the corner of her eye, Éowyn discerned a glittering stare: one that held memories of pain and relief alike, bearing warmth that brushed her sullied cheek as it once did long ago, in the Houses of Healing.

Sensations and nerves aside, she continued as though unawares, relaying the state of things as they were with no embellishment. After all was done, Éowyn was able to retreat to the rooms allotted to her for the regular trips to the capital. She'd planned on returning to her new home in Haramon within the week, and that was well and good.

Or would have been.

Bathed and changed, she could barely keep her eyes open, gazing out the grand window facing stars that hung gleefully in a black sky. Their silvery light lingered in her mind long after she fell in a heap, sprawled over the voluminous bed. Éowyn absently cleared the messy, wet strands from her face. You’re here, then… it has been a while, hasn’t it? 

As her eyes were closing, there came a knock on the chamber door, and a youth’s muffled voice from the other side.

“My lady, a missive for you!”

After the messenger handed her the folded piece of paper, Éowyn cast a furtive look at the wax sigil.

The hardened skin of her fingertips brushed over the elegant, languorous handwriting; the expression on her face remained still as she read. When she looked up, the youth was still there, shuffling his feet. 

“You may go,” she told him with a pleasant smile that caused a mumbled ‘Yes, my lady’, and a flustered scurry. 

Still smiling, Éowyn closed the chamber door and slid down to the floor, her back propped against the cold wood. 

How can I refuse?

But you knew this already, did you not, nihtegale? 

AN:

In this AU, I had Éowyn stay on after the War of The Ring to be one of the two Chief Commanders of King Elessar, whose duties involved guarding and maintaining the borders of Gondor. Haramon - originally Emyn Arnen was written as Haramon. Chose to use this first version of the name here. 'nihtegale' - 'nightingale' in Old English. For the purpose of this fic, I used it as a term of affection in Rohanese!

It's my first time participating in @fall-for-tolkien's Scribbles & Drabbles I'm very happy (though slightly embarrassed on behalf of the word count) to have finished this for angbaddies lovely piece of art! Thank you very much for committing it @saintstars I was ever so happy to find a still unclaimed angbang piece!

Am I utterly unfit to participate in anything with a deadline or word count restriction? Absolutely. Will I get better at this? Absolutely no. I'm afraid I'm too old for a fundamental change in my personality now.

“Come.”

They call me Great Death, the Constrainer. Black Foe of the World, Master of Lies. They say I am merciless and proud, atrocious, barbarous, brutal and ruthless, abominable and terrible to behold, wicked and vicious.

They are not wrong.

 “Come,” I whisper, my voice a phantom of its earth-cracking thunder tracing across his heated stone-skin.

I imagine him adorned lightly. Onyx-black, ink-soft lace balming his skin. A hue of jewelry, the rings he so likes, fragrant with flawless gold.

Undone, the scarlet-crimsoned whisper of his hair, embellishing the tickling bed sheets about him, breathing with a faint warm glow, loose, unbound, free.

Instead, iron and steel.

Rather, all I feel it is the blunt taste of metal humming beneath my fingertips. Winter-gray and silver-cool.

Never have I hissed at the melody of cutting cold as he, freezing snow and whirling ice. Now, as I envision him in soft-light fiber and warmth-glowing fabric, I nearly do.

Instead, I touch upon the spiral shell of Mairon’s armor, inch by inch.

Enough work.

I almost say it.

I feel Mairon tense the moment the words soar upon my tongue. I think his bruises, sprains and scars, so carefully withheld beneath his armor, coil.

My own injuries are throbbing as the mountain’s heart pulsates.

On the tip of my tongue I finger two different syllables, then. I taste them, long and probing. They are not familiar between my lips.

Instead, I murmur, “Come.”

Then try, taste, whisper.

“Please.”
