On Fanfiction

I was cruising through the net, following the cold trail of one of the periodic “Is or is not Fanfic the Ultimate Literary Evil?” arguments that crop up regularly, and I’m now bursting to make a point that I never see made by fic defenders.

We’re all familiar with the normal defenses of fic: it’s done out of love, it’s training, it’s for fun. Those are all good and valid defenses!

But they miss something. They damn with faint praise. Because the thing is, when you commit this particular Ultimate Literary Evil you’ve now told a story. And stories are powerful. The fact that it wasn’t in an original world or with original characters doesn’t necessarily make it less powerful to any given reader.

I would never have made this argument a few years ago. A few years ago I hadn’t received messages from people who were deeply touched by something I wrote in fanfic. So what if it’s only two or three or four people, and I used someone else’s world and characters? For those two or three or four people, I wrote something fucking important. You cannot tell me that isn’t a valid use of my time and expect me to feel chastened. I don’t buy it. I won’t feel ashamed. I will laugh when you call something that touches other people ‘literary masturbation.’ Apparently you’re not too up on your sex terminology.

Someone could argue that if I’d managed the same thing with original characters in an original world, it could’ve touched more people. They might be right! On the other hand, it might never have been accepted for publication, or found a market if self published, and more importantly I would never have written it because I didn’t realize I could write. The story wouldn’t have happened. Instead, thanks to fanfic being a thing, it did. And for two or three or four people it mattered. When we talk about defending fanfic, can we occasionally talk about that?

“Long ago, the moon was much larger. It covered the whole sky, and the nighttime was even brighter than the day.”

Damien stared up at his father wide eyed in amazement, and the king smiled.

“It’s true, little one.”

Logan brushed a stray curl back into place behind the little boy’s ear before continuing.

“The sun grew jealous of the moon, and struck out. The blow shattered the moon into pieces, and those pieces were scattered all over the sky, and we called them stars. The man in the moon was split into many pieces, and each star has a part of him in it.”

The two royals looked up at the night sky.

“When you wish on the brightest stars, the moon can hear you. And if your wish is of worthy intentions, he may even grant you your wish.”

The eight year old prince shot to his feet and ran to the railing. He raked his eyes over the countless stars, searching for the brightest of them all. One particular star, the Northern Star, caught his eye.

Logan joined his son at the railing, and whispered.

“It’s just a story, Damien. It’s not real.”

Damien closed his eyes and wished anyway.

Star light, star light, brightest star I see tonight, grant me a wish, by dawn’s first light.

I wish to not be alone.

I wish this wish with all my might.

That night, the moon seemed to shine a little brighter.

Damien dreamed of a boy made of light. While he slept, he played and laughed and danced with the Northern Star.

When the prince had woken up that first morning, he was disappointed to see his wish had not been answered. He longed for the companionship of another boy, like the one from his dreams.

So that night, he wished again.

Star light, star light, brightest star I see tonight, grant me a wish, by dawn’s first light.

I wish to not be alone.

I wish this wish with all my might.

Again he dreamt of those stars in the form of a boy. For twelve years, this cycle went on.

The boy grew alongside the prince, and they became best friends. It never once occurred to Damien to ask for the boy’s name.

He woke up every morning and was disappointed that the dream refused to join him in the waking world. He went to sleep hoping it would work this time.

It never did.

On the eve of his twenty-first birthday, Damien decided to try one last time. If this wish went unanswered, he would never wish on a star again.

“Star light, star light, brightest star I see tonight, grant me a wish, by dawn’s first light.

I wish.... I wish to dance with the boy made of stars, for real.”

Please.

“I wish this wish with all my might.”

Damien waited, his eyes still squeezed shut.

One minute passed.

Then two.

By the tenth minute, his shoulders sagged in defeat. He turned to go inside, and froze. There, in his room, was a man.

Could it be? Was his wish finally answered?

“Your Highness? I have your tea.”

The prince’s heart dropped. He turned back to the railing and fought back his tears.

“Just... just leave it on the nightstand, please.”

“As you wish, my Lord. Do you desire anything more?”

Damien shook his head and the servant’s footsteps retreated, followed by the thud of his door.

As soon as the door shut behind the servant, the prince took a shaky breath in. Then, the tears began to fall, unbidden and unwanted. He fell to his knees and cried his heart out.

How foolish of him to believe in wishing stars.

He did not dream of the star boy that night.

But in the early hours of the morning, just before dawn, Damien was roused from his slumber by a blinding light.

“Good morning, Prince Damien.”

Hovering just outside his bedroom window was a man dressed in royal clothes. A prince’s uniform, with a sash of pure gold and a crown of lively stars. In his eyes were the cosmos, and Damien felt his heart ache.

“Am I dreaming? Please tell me I am not dreaming.”

The man offered a lopsided smile, as well as his hand.

“Come and find out, my love.”

So Damien rose from his bed and made his way over, his pulse racing with anticipation. He took the offered hand.

“Do you trust me, my Prince?”

“I don’t even know your name.”

“Forgive me. It’s been eons since I have needed a name. I am the angel of the Northern Star, but for you, I will be Roman. It is much simpler, no?”

Roman bowed deeply, and kissed the knuckles of the prince before him. Damien could feel his face burning but could not tear his eyes away.

“Y-yes, that’s... I like it.”

Roman chuckled softly and drew the blushing prince into an all too familiar position— it seemed they were about to waltz. The angel’s wings stretched to their full potential, and the two of them rose into the sky.

The castle was so far beneath them, and if he had looked down, the prince would have been terrified. It was only the angel’s breathtaking eyes that kept him looking up.

Roman began to sing. His voice filled the night with beautiful melodies, and Damien could feel his soul singing with the angel in his arms.

I'm trying to hold my breath

Let it stay this way

Can't let this moment end

You set off a dream in me

Getting louder now

Can you hear it echoing?

Take my hand

Will you share this with me?

As sunrise reached out over the horizon, Roman slowly lowered their dance back down to the prince’s balcony. Leaning in close, the angel pressed a soft kiss to Damien’s forehead.

“You have waited so long for me, my love. I promise you I will return to you tonight.”

The prince blinked, and Roman was gone.

In his hand was a moonflower.

Roman was true to his word. Each morning, before the sun made its appearance, he would fly down to Damien’s balcony and offer his hand. They would dance until the sun rose, and the angel would leave a moonflower behind as proof that it was real.

For two weeks and five days, Roman and Damien shared the night sky. The prince had obtained twenty flowers.

“My love, I have a gift for you.”

“A gift?”

“Yes.”

The moonflowers flew into the angel’s palm, swirling and spinning and glowing until Roman smiled. And there, floating over his hand, was a crown of stars, almost identical to his own. He placed it gingerly on Damien’s head.

“I promise you we will see each other again.”

“You’re leaving?”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Roman wrapped an arm around the prince, pressing him up and in so they were as close as possible. Damien gasped softly at the movement, his fingers instinctively tightening their grip on the angel’s jacket.

“Will you allow me this honor, my love?”

“What do you m— oh. Oh!”

The prince blushed fiercely, and Roman smiled. The star’s wings cocooned themselves around the two.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

Roman tasted of starshine and moonbeams. A feeling of serenity and joy flooded every inch of Damien’s body. The world seemed to spin and he couldn’t help but laugh into the kiss.

The angel pulled back just enough to whisper, his lips brushing Damien’s as he spoke.

“I will wait for you, my prince. I will wait for you for as long as I must,” Roman backed away. Rising into the air, he hovered over the railing, wings beating to keep him airborne.

“When it comes time for you to join me in the stars, all of the cosmos will rejoice with me.”

And the Northern Star disappeared into the night, leaving a prince and his crown of stars behind.
