What's good? What's the news? How ya doing? ⠀ From experience, I'm realizing, I'm one of the rare people who see a friend or even a stranger and pose that question sincerely. ⠀ I genuinely want to know. I want to hear what you found to be a good thing today. With all the madness and scattered misery going on in the world, did you notice a good thing? How about a blessing? Anything that flipped your gratitude switch? ⠀ Where I'm from, folk walk by each other on the street with stone-faced ambivalence and when someone says "How ya doing?", we just say it back. ⠀ What do you think we could change if we asked after our neighbors and genuinely waited to hear the answer? If we genuinely responded in kind? Do you think it would open an opportunity to hear and be heard? To discover how you can be of service, even if it's to offer a bit of spoken encouragement? ⠀ I watched two young men avert their eyes as they passed each other one day. Not wantimg to be "joe". What would change if we nodded familially, or greeted each other with a fist bump, just in passing? Just acknowledging, "I see you, fam." What would change about the violence, the apathy, the state of protecting and standing up for each other? What COULD change? ⠀ I see the potential, so I will continue to brave the weird looks when I smile at strangers, genuinely answer to greetings posed as questions, and pause to wait for the good things we can hear after "What's good?" . I hold it down as a single mother, but wishing me happy Father’s Day is not a compliment. I'm not a man. I'm not a father. My children have fathers. Im not a man. I'm not a father. My children were carried in my womb for nine months, came out of my vagina and were breastfed for two full years. All things a father cannot do. My children’s fathers provide a strong inner core resource, a sense of well-being and good self-esteem from a male perspective and in a way I cannot. I'm a woman. I'm a mother. I'm a coparent. While the sentiment is well intended, it doesn’t make sense to me. I'm not a man. I'm not a father. Even if I was raising them by myself. I still wouldn't be their father. I'm not a man. I'm not a father. Happy Fathers Day to my children’s fathers. Im grateful for their presence in all of my children’s lives, including the ones they are not the biological father of. I pray for their health, happiness and abundance. I give thanks for the balance of masculinity and perspective they bring to the lives of all the children in our family- including the ones they fathered that I did not give birth to. I appreciate that we can remain on good terms and even friends as we have raised/ are raising incredible human beings. And while our building has not always been agreeable, we remain solid as a family. People often ask me how is this possible. Why do I have some much love, care and concern for my exes. It’s possible because I love them, and the reason is my Black children need their Black fathers. Its possible because it’s necessary. When my children’s fathers thrive, our children benefit. Let the fathers FATHER. Honor and Uphold Black Fatherhood. Black children need their Black fathers. 2020 got my nerves a little funny. We're all a bit scarred tbh. I'm getting far away and fast from the things that were revealed to me to be detrimental to my growth and success. But, I've also learned to be patient (to a point) because we are all shell shocked. . You know all those things you wanted to do? You should gone 'head and do them. Waiting can be a blessing but can also be a trap. . I want to see everyone UP no matter which monsters we have to slay this year. Get your stick and move game up. Your duck and dash skills sharpened. CONNECT with folks this year. STRENGTHEN your communities, no matter what the makeup is. BUILD strongholds that can't be easily infiltrated. Yes, even over Zoom lol. @wildlyonswellness by @easy_repost_app ---------------------------------------- I saw a quote a while ago that I strongly resonated with and I think most of you will too: . “If you listen to your body when it whispers you won’t have to hear it scream” . Society makes women feel like they need to do it all. We are seen as weak if we don’t. . We are expected to work hard and have thriving careers, take care of everything at home, take care of the kids, cook healthy meals, get a hard workout in everyday, you can’t say no or your are seen as a bitch, and on top of that we are expected to look a certain way. The pressure we put on ourselves is wild. . This pressure, these expectations, are what is causing our health to spiral. . We are stressed the F out. We spread ourselves too thin. We are stuck in a constant state of stress and honestly it’s hard to remember to eat and on top of that a nourishing meal. In some cases we even praise ourselves for being able to run on fumes (or stress hormones) all day not eating a crumb all day. . One of the only ways we can come out of this stressed out state and feel better is by nourishing ourselves. Eating every 3-4 hours, eating protein, carb and fat at every meal, getting in a bedtime snack, eat the damn carbs and fruit, focusing on eating superior foods from animal sources, and start taking care of yourself, stop over committing and just say no. . Symptoms are our bodies cries for help and most of the time we are too wound up in “life” that we don’t listen and we end up depleting ourselves even further.
