a major political organisation. despite its small size, it was composed of the elites of the traditionalist party. a paramilitary organisation, they were the foremost agency of security when the party was in power.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 was a faction that sought, among other things, to gain a more favourable position for wizards in the growing world, economically, socially and technologically. they aimed to decrease the regulations on the mediums and practice of magic (particularly the dark arts), alongside benefiting the standing of purebloods in wizarding society. the party quickly spurred to popularity, building their headquarters throughout the continent.

the one thing i always found fascinating was the change in name from the knights of walpurgis to the death eaters - particularly how it came about, or what set them apart from one another.

the term knights of walpurgis is a play on the word walpurgisnacht, saint walpurga's eve. it was also called the night of witches, and they were thought to convene at an appointed meeting place. this came from the medieval superstition that forces of evil or spirits would attack the evening before a feast. as for the death eaters, voldemort sought to conquer death, and what better way to do so than to consume it. it could be as simple as eating or destroying death, like the sin-eaters of wales.

there is a word in old english, hlafæta, which, by extension, means the domestic servants of a lord. i think that describes it perfectly, what the early knights and later death eaters meant to tom riddle. knights have always been associated with the ideals of honour, chivalrous fighters trusted by their lords. servants, on the other hand, were simple employees who were in the service of their masters.

therefore: the knights of walpurgis were part of riddle's inner circle, those closest to him, while the death eaters, to some extent, could be seen as their lesser successors. the change, it demonstrates how they inched closer to their fall, how they lost sight of their mission. the knights had ambition - they thought of themselves as cleansers, as reformers. the death eaters were simply ruled by the firm hand of fear. their days of glory faded, the ideas of revolutionaries wasted on a one-dimensional cause. for the death eaters to destablise the wizarding world with sheer violence, there would have already been some sort of internal sabotage in the ministry - in the eyes of the people themselves. before the death eaters, there would have also been a volunteer corps, smaller divisions under the knights. fresh, young blood, pawns in a larger game. it popularised the discriminatory sentiment, indoctrination, making it easier for the dark lord to take over the wizarding world. the knights, an elite corps themselves, were political soliders, with their power, forming a state within a state.

the way i see it, the knights were a more sopisticated force, assembled by tom riddle for political manoeuvring. skillful, influential wizards, occupying important positions within the ministry, winning support for a new party. they took root as a secret society spread across the big three schools, growing throughout the continent as politicians, legislators, statesmen, assemblymen, represenatatives and diplomats.

the tragedy of house black is that they are stars. they are destined to burn, to be extinguished. the sky they share is not enough for them. no matter how much they try, they can never be together. what makes them, is also their destruction. love cannot save them.

the knights of walpurgis are somewhere between the kingsmen and a corporate sitcom to me. they're so fun to think about, or at least the most fun a budding terrorist organisation could be...

okay but what if they had call signs!?

𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 —

𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the oldest of pollux and irma's children, alphard was the most handsome of the bunch, even more so than the rest of his cousins. his conquests were no secret — wealth, drinks and lovers, alphard possessed abundantly. although it garnered him a bit of a reputation within pureblood society, he never married. lucretia black was once considered as a potential bride for him, but the match fell through owing to the efforts of orion and the persistence of lucretia herself. with age, alcohol dulled his features, turning him into a much darker version of himself, attractive nonetheless. alphard was one of the few members of house black who preferred being socially relevant. he enjoyed entertainment of all sorts and was a great patron of the arts, a benefactor of many causes.

𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the first daughter of pollux and irma, amalthea inherited her mother's palette and none of the characteristic features of house black. she was her parents' favourite, a skilled witch who was popular for her unique beauty. from her many suitors, she married ignatius prewett, whom she had been courting throughout her school years. they would have no children, hosting family members at shell cottage over the holidays. she spent most of her time surrounded by those she loved. amalthea did not outwardly agree with her family's purist ideologies, yet never had particular compassion nor disdain for muggles.

𝐜𝐲𝐠𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the thirdborn of pollux and irma black, cygnus was boyishly handsome in his youth, bearing a stark resemblence to his cousin orion, throughout their early years and well into adulthood. he was fiercely loyal to his family, shouldering the responsibility of being his father's heir when his brother abandoned his duty in pursuit of pleasure. like amalthea, he married druella rosier after a brief courtship during their school years. the couple had three daughters, much to the chagrin of the senior members of his family. cygnus was a quiet man, often seeking the company of his sheets and instruments over chatter.

𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the last child of pollux and irma, walburga was deemed to be plain-looking in comparison to her sisters. it wasn't that she was displeasing to look at, simply not extraordinary. she spent most of her time with her mother, learning how to be the 'perfect' woman. she was similar to cygnus in demeanour, but they grew further apart once he started his first year of hogwarts. walburga's time at the school would be largely overshadowed by the rest of her kin. she married her cousin, orion (at his behest), the union resulting in two sons. she blossomed fully once she took on the role of lady black—her duty to her family mattered the most to walburga. of all those in her generation, she was the most staunch in her discriminatory views against muggles.

𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the son of arcturus and melania black, orion's destiny was decided at birth — the son of the first son, the heir of house black. a gentle man, orion loved the world and his kin dearly—his sister lucretia was his favourite. as she was a carefree girl, he bore the brunt of her recklessness most times—albeit, without complaint. his relationship with his wife was strained. he raised his sons to the best of his efforts, even if walburga was the true head of the household. he was one of the first men to rise in support of tom riddle's cause, although it is unclear if that was because of his own views on wizarding society or his sister's involvement.

𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤; the daughter of arcturus and melania, the jewel of house black, lucretia was undoubtedly the most beautiful girl of the three. she had a great many admirers, yet only engaged in a brief dalliance with aleksander vulchanov in the summer of her sixth year, in addition to a lasting love affair with tom riddle, starting during their time at hogwarts, continuing into adulthood. she was very well known in the public eye, a star through and through, a socialite and celebrity. gifted at magic, lucretia was cunning, a very ambitious woman, aligning herself with riddle's cause to achieve her own goals. she improved the credibility of the mission, using her fame to strengthen their ranks.

this is for an alternate universe fic that i'm working on !! the central focus of it is on the evolution of the knights of walpurgis, from their formation to more favourable circumstances. they will have a more organised structure & less obvious dealings than the later death eaters. i find that it would be better for their activities to be mostly political scheming alongside a fair bit of covert violence. i see them as a group that works together to achieve different ends, but together, they are the means to the end. their purpose is much more than pureblood supremacy; i would put it as either reclaiming the world or establishing a new order. it was not to rule over muggles, but to eliminate all weakness, entirely. knowing that grindelwald was still in power by 1945, his vision, however flawed had to have inspired them. they were revolutionaries, the heralds of a new world. with that in mind, i wanted to explore a new dynamic with house black (and all of the characters, really), which is why their ages are out of order. that, and because it's convenient to the plot if they're closer in age & likely to be in the same place at the same time. exploring the lesser-known characters, vis à vis alphard and lucretia, i think, called for some creative liberty.

i wanted to write a new take on established characters as well, like walburga — to see how her mind works, how she grew to be the person that she was. i wanted her to be a little softer around the edges, to explore her forgone sense of naivety and the years leading up to her tenure as the mistress of house black. as such, she will be the youngest & most far removed from the bunch, unseen, unheard, until she gets the opportunity to prove herself. she's indifferent to her brothers, but amalthea and lucretia are what hit where it hurts the most. she wonders why she's inadequate, not understanding that it's simply a matter of age, of interest. their misguided attempts to interact with her don't do much to remedy how she feels, either. "Well, you see, she's the Black Swan, and I'm the White Swan." "And what about me, then? What shall I be?" "You? I suppose you'll have to sit this one out. There's no Brown Swan, after all, silly." "A shame, truly. Perhaps, she could dress as a turkey." "Cygnus—" "Alright, alright; I'll see myself out." her marriage with orion comes about in a way that finally solidifies the resentment she bore for lucretia — orion chooses to marry walburga so that lucretia would not have to marry alphard. she thinks orion to be a fool, to indulge her cousin like that once more, like how he has done all his life. she weds him to show, without doubt, how she is beyond them — that unruly woman, and simple-minded amalthea. life comes easily to lucretia; her parents were overjoyed to have another child, a daughter no less, once the responsibility of an heir was out of the way— which is why i had her be born after orion. she has it all — looks, wit, fame. love comes to her naturally. but as it is with every great witch, she longs for more. for power, for a world of her own. she finds it quite hilarious, how everyone around her seems to buy the act of the ditzy heiress, the sweet girl. she's a flower, and the snake beneath it. when she meets tom riddle — she meets her match. it's why she wants him, why he wants her. it's not love, nor lust; it's a third, secret, worse thing. she sees the parts of him that he hides. it compels him, in a way, to have her. it is hard for him to reconcile himself with the fact that she's a song he cannot unlearn. "He could see it now: an heir to further his legacy, a beautiful woman on his arm. Was that the goal of every conqueror, every reformer before him?" i don't have much to say about amalthea and ignatius. apart from the occaisional strain, they serve to relieve the plot from tension. a wholesome sideplot, something to unburden the narrative. the others, i believe, are best known through writing, as the story goes. there's many more things, many more people i've yet to introduce. i will add to this thread (or create a new post) with information about the rest of the cast!

The Strangeways family was quite the oddity back in their heyday. Pandora’s father was a lycanthropologist and had been working on his own Wolfsbane Potion to relieve symptoms of lycanthropy. He was very adamant on his conclusion that there was no cure to the condition and merely wanted to dull the suffering of those who had it.

The Shrieking Shack was home to several ghosts, many of which were feared by the majority of souls haunting Hogwarts Castle. These ghosts were most likely former occupants of the home, although a few could’ve started squatting there without any previous connections to the house.

The Strangeways never had the need to get rid of the ghosts. The family didn’t find them disturbing and knew that they had no right to turn away a lost soul looking for shelter.

Pandora wasn’t afraid of the unconventional quirks her home possessed, especially when her family acted very differently from the rest of wizarding society.

She and her family were hospitable towards everything out of the ordinary. They didn’t fear the hideous things that lurked in the darkness, nor did they run from the creatures that haunted the nightmares of an average witch or wizard.

When Remus Lupin enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Mister Strangeways had volunteered willingly to house the werewolf during his transformations.
