see if someone asked me how to get into comics id tell them to look up reading lists, find foundational arcs, more accessible one-shots etc but that does not mean ill take my own advice. when i want to get into a superhero i start reading from their first appearance like god intended

also. tangentially. travel arcs and team books are all well and good but i don't get the push to move gotham/bat characters out of gotham. or i get that people want them to have their own supporting casts outside of bruce's orbit but . . . bruce doesn't own gotham, man. it's a big city. characters like jason, tim, steph, duke, helena all have deep and abiding ties to gotham -- as deep as bruce's -- so why should they have to leave?

It’s shit being a superhero when you know that the multiverse exists. You spend all day saving people, you’re tired, you want to go to bed, and right before you fall asleep someone says “The High Evolutionary is going to turn everyone on earth into a werewolf!” and every bone in your body says “Fucking. Maybe we can be the werewolf dimension. The Universe Where Everyone Is A Werewolf. There are infinite dimensions where everyone isn’t a werewolf. It could be fine. It could be good even.”

And you fight the High Evolutionary and you win and your world isn’t the Werewolf Dimension. But the thought was there. God the thought was there

in a. I don't wanna say better because let's be clear this would suck. but in a different world nightwing brothers in blood ended with the three of them forming the world's most toxic superhero team of nightwings for exactly four days before dick finds out about jason and cheyenne sleeping together and accuses jason of only doing it to piss him off. jason proceeds to talk mad shit about all of dick's former relationships. dick says he wishes bruce's aim was better. cheyenne wants to know what the hell dick meant by "don't worry, I'm not mad at you, it wasn't your fault." the three of them have an all out brawl the likes of which we haven't seen since dick's mob era. jason stabs dick. dick breaks three of jason's ribs. cheyenne electrocutes both of them so hard they pass out. she goes home and starts a toxic lesbian situationship with her assistant. dick and jason wake up and silently agree to go their separate ways and not tell bruce about this. dick goes back to gotham. jason already told bruce about it because he wanted to start drama. bruce makes a comment about picking his teams better because he's worried about dick's safety and dick hears "you are bad at what you do and you need better teams to back you up because you don't know what you're doing. by the way I hate the titans" and dick is like the FUCK did your just say about my friends and then they have a screaming match that escalates into a physical fight the likes of which we haven't seen since that time in fugitive where dick roundhouse kicked bruce in the jaw and punched out the glass of the good soldier case. this happens in the span of three issues maximum.

anyway here is a new poll series/social experiment??? ish for fans of tim drake! or, i guess, people who are neutral or negative about tim drake but have read a lot of his appearances. i will post one poll every day until they are done; this will work best if you vote in every poll you see, although obviously i'm not the boss of you. you can use consistent criteria or not! you can also tell me how you arrived at your answers, and i encourage you to.

i should note that i don't necessarily mean "tim drake is [x]'s oc" in a literal sense, which means that this is probably a bad one to start off with, but i'm going in rough chronological order, so.

One of the really fun things about comics is that they are frequently written from the perspective of the character heading the title, which means characters who are just cameos in that story are shown from the perspective of how the main character relates to them, rather than an objective angle.

Azrael #31 has a stunning example of this.

The art design of this entire page is fantastic. Bruce is in shadow, seated on at throne before the Bat Computer, with Jean-Paul standing as a supplicant at the bottom of a long flight of stairs, his head level with Bruce's feet (and from the framing, it's even suggesting Jean-Paul might be kneeling). Alfred is in the shadows behind Bruce, like a minister or vizier, questioning Jean-Paul in a way that requires him to elaborate and explain.

It's framing the whole conversation around how it makes Jean-Paul feel.

If we were to see this same conversation flipped in Batman or Detective Comics, it's likely that Bruce and Jean-Paul would be standing beside each other by the computer, from Bruce's perspective. Or Bruce doing that thing where he sits and works at the computer and the person having the conversation with him stands behind his shoulder to talk.

But we're here with Jean-Paul, who is feeling inadequate and unworthy and like he can never measure up to Bruce's high standards. And so: supplicant before the throne. The knight begging for a quest to redeem himself, for honest work.

It's just such a fun thing that's basically exclusive to the way comics work as a shared universe.
