I. Taylor

Taylor holds her camera smile for an extra count of five, then drops it and groans, “Fuck my life.”

II. Tommy

“Colder,” Tommy shouts over at Evan, who’s blindly scrambling through rain-drenched orange poppies for the phone the woman on the ground next to him lost when she fell. “About two yards to your left.”

Evan stumbles leftwards.

“And watch out for snakes!”

Evan stands and shoots him a dirty look.

III. Buck

“Budding romance” isn’t actually a relationship stage that Buck has all that much experience with. There was Abby, who after the tracheotomy cancelled nearly all the romantic dates he planned, leaving them with sex and coffee after a shift and not much in between; there was Ali, where the romance barely happened at all before a ladder truck crushed his leg and their relationship; there was Taylor, where they started with pretty good sex and fumbled through the rest of it; and then Natalia, who seemed to be more into romancing capital-d Death than Buck.

And then Tommy, who looks at him like this, like Buck is something to behold – he’s beholden – beheld?

He’s beholden to Tommy, sure; to the smile he put on Tommy’s face and has to keep. He’s Buck 4.0 and he has a clearer view of the person he is than he’s ever had, and Tommy is… so fucking amazing that sometimes Buck wonders what the fuck he’s doing with a guy like him.
