Let me talk about something I realised while watching Dead Apple.

Shibusawa Tatsuhiko says that no one has surpassed his expectations yet, no one has been able to fight their own abilities and claim it back by winning.

So.

According to the sequence of events depicted in the movie.

Akutagawa defeated Rashoumon before anyone else in Yokohama defeated their abilities.

Doesn't that mean Akutagawa is the first gifted ever to surpass their own ability?

Let me talk about Dazai Osamu.

Dazai is often so animated, whether it be flirting shamelessly with beautiful women, or trying to get on Kunikida's nerves, or messing with naive little Atsushi, or irritating the living heck out of Chuuya.

But, emotions? In a previous post, I talked a bit about deciphering Dazai's emotions, about how he shows real and true emotions only in certain very calculated and planned situations.

Even for a person who rarely shows true emotions, it is visible how his face changes when the Port Mafia is brought up. His voice, his eyes, the tightness in his jaws— everything changes.

Season 1 Episode 3, when Kunikida is describing the Port Mafia to Atsushi.

For me, this is a very important hint to decipher him, a tiny gap in space-time from where I can peek into his heart.

In Season 1 Episode 5, when he intervenes the sergeant's nervous rant to say, "No, this wasn't the Mafia's doing", he's a changed man. He not only describes, but reminisces and relives the numerous times he's seen the event he's describing unfold.

He doesn't meet anybody's eyes, he's staring into space. His voice is lower, a sharp contrast to the usual high pitched, lulting, lively voice. This isn't the voice he uses to talk with his colleagues in the Detective Agency, with Atsushi.

In Dead Apple, while facing away from Atsushi, he says, "I might have stayed there, murdering people." His head is angled towards the ground, voice low.

(what might he have been feeling then? that's a topic for another day.)

In Season 2 Episode 9, while he's talking directly with the Port Mafia boss, Mori-san, there's is somethingly uncannily odd about his face— eyes open far too wide, smile far too forced.

I've searched long for the right word to describe this expression— it's uncomfortable.

Haunted.

He's uncomfortable, he's uneasy, but he doesn't know that, he can't acknowledge that, he wouldn't accept that, because how do you hide what you don't know you're feeling?

The problem here is, Dazai cannot see that he himself, was also a victim. He sees himself only as an abuser.

The fact that he's also a victim, a young boy who watched his boss murder an old man, a young boy held at gunpoint so he couldn't go to save his friend— he doesn't understand his abuse. He doesn't understand he was also wronged, he always sees himself as the wrong do-er.

Which is why he never let himself heal, because in order to do that, you have to notice your injuries first. Like he literally covered himself up in bandages, figuratively he did so too— made up a smile and built walls all around him, impenetrable, insurmountable.

In these specific moments though, his face betrays his mind.

His face makes it very apparent that he was affected, is still affected, regardless of whatever he tells himself.

It's in these moments, that you see he has a living, beating heart, scarred and heavy and haunted with the trauma of his unspeakable past.

It's in these moments that you see he's human— still, despite, after all.

Let's talk about this scene, Season 2, Episode 12.

Atsushi wouldn't have left the Moby Dick.

He would have stayed there, begging Kyouka to not crash the drone against the Moby Dick, because that would kill her.

He would have stayed there, and he would have died.

What was it to Akutagawa? His mission was over. He could've left.

He didn't.

He had used up all his strength in the fight. But he still dragged Atsushi, a raging and screaming Atsushi, off the Moby Dick.

He didn't speak a single word, but he didn't let go either.

Why? Why was it so important to him that Atsushi made it out alive?

See the determination writ large on his face when he grabbed the collar of Atsushi's shirt?

Yeah, that's love.

and yes, I do believe his mouth is heaven.

Let me talk about a wonderful parallel here.

Akutagawa, in Season 1 Episode 10, to Atsushi:

— Why is it you?

Lucy, in Season 1 Episode 12, to Atsushi:

— Why does it have to be you?

— Why can't it be me?

Both of them are orphans, both of them have been raised in a hell where they have had to fight tooth-and-nail to earn a space to exist, to earn the right to live.

They know that they have to constantly fulfill expectations and orders, consistently outperform themselves in order to be worthy, in order to belong.

Their worth has always been measured in their performance.

For one, failure meant the threat of having to go back to living like a stray dog in the slums again.

He fought through numerous bloody mouths— in order to belong, in order to hear a few precious words from someone he deemed precious.

For the other, failure meant being tossed aside like a used napkin, the fear of being alone again.

She fought through the constant terror of abandonment��� in order to be considered worthy of belonging.

And now they look at someone else. Another orphan.

Another orphan whose power is immense but crude, who is learning to use it and who still makes mistakes— but he isn't kicked in the guts till he's coughing up blood.

Nobody points a gun at his head and shoots when he fucks up.

Another orphan who is taken in by the Agency, not only because they see potential in his power but also because they care for him. When he is abducted, he has people coming to rescue him.

He fights without feeling afraid of what fate awaits him should he fail in a mission.

They genuinely don't understand why he's worthy of all this. Why he deserves all this but they don't. Why he doesn't have to be terrified of losing what he has, or why he has everything that they have always wanted.

They don't understand and then, one day, they do.

They don't understand him, until one day, they do.

They both save his life (even while continuously denying that they care for him), they save him.

And in the process, they save themselves.
