Uzushio/uzumaki headcanons except I’m bias for other media I’ve consumed and bias for uzushio/uzumaki clan centered fics

If you see any recognizable ones, then it’s probably because I read it in a fic and treat it as canon!

(More for me than anyone else to keep track of the uzumaki clan stuff in my head)

VERY LONG VERY VERY LONG.

1. The people of Uzushio worshipped the sage of six paths. Sure it was kinda hard to follow the sages word of peace when literally everyone and their mother was at war like 24/7 but they did their best-

I actually like to believe they have higher chakra stores than the Senju did (not by much though) and this was through practicing ninshu/ninshu adjacent stuff that Hagoromo taught when he was alive.

2. This comes to my second hc- that the Uzumaki and people of Uzushio are history buffs. Honestly this just came as a more comedic thing bc imagine ur some clan trying to screw the uzumaki clan over and they pull out 400 year old documents of some old treaty agreement and go “this u?”

Also as worshippers of the sage + being history buffs, it’s HILARIOUS to imagine they just had murals in their old temples of how chakra was introduced😭 like they had the arrival of kaguya, the birth of her sons, the battle of kaguya and her sons and the birth of Indra and ashura. It’s funny to think it’s such obscure knowledge to everyone outside of Uzushio but to them they are like “yea?? That’s literally what happened… why WOULDNT you know where chakra comes from??” Like that just straight up being history and everyone else thinking the uzushio people are out of their minds.

3. Here’s one I’ve seen a lot (in fics sorta). That the island of Uzushio is kinda alive?? It also fits in with my hc of them being like the Ainu people and worshipping the land. In the naruto au in my head, Kaguya is a god and NOT AN ALIEN!! There are no more of her, she has no family and there ARE NO ALIENS! Like kaguya being some sort of god could definitely mean uzushio could be one too.

Nothing like “yea uzushio straight up talks” but more like if you’re a lost child and need help on where to go, the wind blows a certain direction to help. That when tragedy happens, rain is always right on cue. The animals are more open to human contact and are like uzushio’s envoys.

4. Uzushio has a higher concentration of nature chakra. Nature chakra is everywhere (atleast I think) in the Naruto world but maybe there are places with higher concentrations. Like the homes of summons have more nature chakra, places where humans have lived for a long while, where tailed beasts spend most of their time.

5. The uzumaki were PARTY ANIMALS. I mean they have livers of steel. I mostly think this because it would be cool to have chakra amounts/stores have a correlation to how much food and liquids you need. Obviously there are special cases but that’s what I generally think.

Imagine the only group of people to tie or atleast come close to tying with an akimichi in an eating contest are these red head party animals who are shouting half the time and somehow BOTTLES deep into alcohol.

Restaurants outside of Uzushio practically shook with either excitement or terror at the arrival of someone with red hair and a loud mouth. Mito Uzumaki in all her grace, was still actively draining supplies of food/drinks. Why? Mostly it just made her laugh at how “outsiders” reacted to her personality. Little did they know she was more on the “calm side” of how uzumaki acted.

6. Uzushio ppl are BIG hippies basically. It helps that they ARE correct that you need to “connect to nature to grow stronger” (sage mode) and “to know others is to know yourself” or sum shit (ninshu). Ppl outside of uzushio think they are absolutely out of their minds and have no clue how they’ve managed to survive so long by themselves.

They are also really open minded like gay ppl? Sure whatever as long as the village survives. Trans ppl? Okay buddy just get those seals done and weapons made.

Mostly I think this would be comedy gold for uzushio ppl meeting other villages and clans and going “hey man What The Fuck?” It’s also just leaning into them being “the people of the weather” with wind water and lightning all being relatively flexible and controllable yet also SUPER dangerous. Wind as an element is usually depicted as freedom, water flexibility and lightning being flexible yet also illuminating. So them being “go with the flow” type of people seems to be pretty accurate. (Esp considering Naruto always rolls with the punches and so does Tsunade and even kushina and karin a bit)

7. Yk what would be funny? Part of Naruto’s healing ability being an Uzumaki thing. Sure the bigger injuries were def kyuubi chakra but small injuries? All the uzumaki genes. Mostly Karin’s healing ability makes me think this could be a thing. When people bite her shes kinda sharing that abilty with others.

8. From canon, we know that red hair and seals (and implied loud mouth/opinionated) are uzumaki traits but yk what I think? Tattoos. The tattoos are SEALS. The standard shinobi uzumaki is COVERED head to toe in seals. Also imagine that yea tattoos existed before the uzumaki clan but they (and later uzushio ppl in general) really became notorious because of their association with “rebellious” uzumaki. Could be an in universe explanation if people associate tattoos with bad things. Bc clan racism.

9. Uzushio is covered in seals. The biggest one is the barrier around uzushio that controls uzushios weather. It needs three people with EXTREME chakra amounts to open (usually opened/closed by the clan head + siblings or subordinates but can be just by the clan head with an extreme cost in chakra) and locks down THE ENTIRETY of uzushio.

Now yes this IS over powered but every jutsu has a cost. As it locks out outsiders it also locks in residents. The seal was used by the uzumaki clan head and during the attack on uzushio. Usually this wouldve been a problem but. So many people had already been kidnapped and/or escaped that no one was left alive to care about being trapped besides the clan head.

10. The Byakugou seal is an uzumaki jutsu. I mean it’s almost 100% confirmed that mito had it. There isn’t any other jutsu to explain the pinkish purple mark on her forehead. I imagine that yes, the seal can link with katsuyu, it’s not a requirement. I feel like it wouldve been mentioned if mito had used katsuyu even if it was just one line.

I also like the think it was senju jutsu (maybe the first user of it wouldve been ashura or a kid/grandkid?) and wasn’t used by the Senju since whenever probably some senju split off to lead to the creation of the uzumaki clan (probably earlier in the senju clans creation they split off).

Also Tsunade coming up with the “Creation rebirth” technique is super weird considering?? Hello?? Uzumaki trademark of healing?? Ik ppl won’t like this one but I imagine the uzumaki could use a creation rebirth like jutsu with the seal BUT TSUNADE COULDNT. Perhaps when mito was teaching her, she couldn’t seem to master the super healing technique. Tsunade made the creation rebirth we all know SPECIFICALLY to be used WITHOUT being full uzumaki or even an uzumaki at all. This would let Tsunade keep her achievement of creating an amazing jutsu but also make it make more sense within the context of the uzumaki clan.

Also creation rebirth being used by past uzumaki and taking up “life force” yet still being used a lot would make sense it’s sorta implied that uzumaki naturally live ALOT longer than normal ppl. I mean with ashina uzumaki the guy had WHITE hair and mito AT 80-90 YEARS OLD still had RED HAIR. Sure it was duller but IT WAS STILL RED??? Imagine how old that mf ashina was…. Life force is something they CAN risk throwing away cuz…. There’s just SO MUCH.

Btw I also think that it’s a jutsu reserved for the clan head and people close to them. Considering mito was probably married off to hashirama for political reasons, mito must’ve been closely related to the clan head and therefore learned the jutsu from them.

11. Dense chakra. I feel like that would just mean it would be harder to mould. Imagine that in uzushio they teach chakra control in a different way than Konoha. Since uzumaki (and most likely the uzushio in general) have SO MUCH chakra it’s hard to handle jutsu, they start off with BIGGER jutsu to accommodate their big chakra reserves (in comparison to Konoha who teach smaller jutsu at the start). They slowly move towards smaller/more delicate jutsu. Healing is a prominent thing in uzushio but pin point accurate healers are still saught after for their amazing control considering their chakra amounts.

Like in Konoha I imagine that they have a version of the leaf on the forehead thing, that being they start off with a rock instead of a leaf, and try to not shatter the rock while sticking to their skin with chakra control. Then when it doesn’t shatter you stick on more rocks and after those you get to a slab/sheet of tree bark. When the tree bark doesn’t break you THEN move to leafs. This is why naruto had SO MUCH of a problem in school and early on with kakashi. He was being taught in such a wrong way to how his chakra worked that it was insane how not even Hiruzen thought to correct him. (Another point to dunk on Hiruzen). The only reason kakashi didn’t was because kushina didn’t talk about her clan very much.

12. The whole chakra powered punch thing HAS to be an uzumaki thing. I mean it’s not like we see hashirama or tobirama using it and I imagine the only one taking care of Tsunade was mito (not counting her parents bc it seem they died when Tsunade was 5 ish and a little after nawakis birth) and I can’t imagine mito NOT teaching her. Mito has had so many people die already (husband, brother in law, son, daughter in law) and if she’s anything like the uzumaki we see, she’s FIERCELY protective of people she loves and I think she would teach Tsunade and nawaki anything to keep them alive.

I don’t think this is a restricted thing. I think that most uzumaki learn this technique because. Why wouldn’t they? They have so much chakra that NOT using it this was would be a waste. I mean besides the chakra control, they could just spam chakra enhanced kicks and punches. Actually it’s more deadly on an uzumaki because they have more chakra to mess with and less control meaning more chakra output.

Imagine Kushina being a user of this technique!! Karin wouldve been but kusa probably didn’t teach her skills outside of healing in fear she would leave/fight back. Karin fighting back even at 12 wouldve been a problem bc I bet most nin wouldn’t be able to dodge her attacks with how potent of chakra they’d be.

13. The chains are a kekkei genkai right?? Am I going crazy or they definitely are…. Anyways I’m making it a solid thing that they are. Either through mental trauma, battle exhaustion or forced out by a seal/jutsu that activates the right chakra points. I’m saying that Tsunade COULDVE had chains but mito checked and she didn’t. Was kinda up to a gamble whether she would or not.

Also making extra clear that yes the Sarutobi monkies staff/rod and uzumaki chains are made up of the same thing.

I think the chains directly descend from the rinnegans chains. I mean it would make sense on where they came from. Possibly ashura passed this down from his father to his descendants who split off and made the uzumaki clan

14. In many Native American tribes, cutting hair is a mourning ritual (to either represent rebirth and new growth or to show respect for the deceased) and I hc the uzumaki to do the same. They cut their hair as a sign of respect to sorta represent all their hard work and dedication and love they had for someone. Plus imagine they didn’t rlly have much else to give to the dead during war times.

15. Inspired by the Ainu people in Japan (and sorta the Māori people but that’s more relating to skintone and a bit of religion). Like the Ainu people, the Uzumaki laid the foundations of their village around rivers basins. Also like the Ainu people, lots of uzumaki wore earrings and consider them gender neutral. I also hc that the uzumaki hunted more with quick acting poisons out of respect for the animals and hunted in moderation, nodding back to the Ainu who hunted with poisons mostly and respected nature and also hunted in moderation.

Like I said earlier, the uzumaki tend to be religious. I like to believe that the uzumaki (like the Ainu) are animists. Animists are people who believe nature, animals, people and even objects have a spiritual presence. (Also the Māori people sort of have an animistic religion but I’m not entirely sure and don’t want to state such things as facts-)

16. Unique funeral traditions. One of these are sea burials. I think in the Uzumaki (and wider uzushio), would put the body (usually of a sailor or someone who worked at sea often) in the ocean with beloved possessions sealed into their body (the body would either be in their uniform or outfit of choice by the family or whatever the person wrote in their will).

Ghana-like funerals. I believe that this would fit into how the Uzumaki weve seen act (sorta bc they all are out in situations where they don’t know their culture or can’t practice it). During funerals, people would sing and dance to celebrate the life that person lived and would have food a drinks for many days. Especially during the death of someone close to the clan leader or the clan leader themselves, the economy of Uzushio goes up due to outsiders and villagers selling food and drinks and traditional clothing or toys to celebrate the life of the person and (in the situation of a clan leaders death) to celebrate the new clan head. Yes there would be crying and such but I feel like they wouldn’t be the type of people that would want others to linger on grief and sadness and focus on making the future better.

17. Unusual gender roles. Kinda ties back to number 6 but in uzushio, women and men have equal roles. Ofc the woman is sorta seen as a caregiver when having children BUT not in the “that’s your place as a woman” kinda way. Obviously who ever gave birth to the child has to give a little more in child care when the baby is still nursing (esp since baby formula might’ve only come up a few decades earlier so not very long) but men and women are expected to act both as guardian figures AND caretakers. One can act as the other but it’s just not as typical in Uzushio.

There is also lots more women in the governmental processes and at war. Sure other clans sent women out but they probably didn’t do it as much unless you had such obvious talent you couldn’t be ignored and shoved into the “wife” role. And even then women outside of uzushio probably don’t serve as long, expecting to go back and take care of children while men went off. More jobs are equally cut (though still have heavier gender leanings due to height and build differences but not as much as outside of uzushio).

I know this is probably kishimotos views on gender getting in the way but with clans there are some with more men shown than women and I decided the uzumaki were going to be different. The uzumaki clan has more women than men (not by a lot but noticeable) and the women usually are taller than the men. Yes I am retconning kishimotos heights for certain characters but idc! I’m also aware that Naruto being short as a kid definitely relates to probably being malnourished but I’m also taking part of that in to my headcanon of uzumaki men being shorter than the women.

Also can u imagine kushina being around the same height as Minato or even taller?? Comedy gold. Karin being able to look Suigetsu and Sasuke in the eye. Genius. Tsunade even without her heels towering over male shinobi. Great. I mean hashirama being tall could contribute but imagine mito also being tall (not as tall as him but close enough he does have hurt his neck to kiss her).

18. UNDERWATER PRISON. Put their worst people down there. People who have used their power as ninja to hurt innocent people (especially children) like bro u are NOT getting out of there dawg😭🙏. The only people to ever escape (without inside help) have been Hozuki clan members and Funato clan members. That was soon fixed with seals so the whole place is SEALED TIGHT. Interrogation also happens there and the only way to get into the prison is via a tunnel in the forest of Uzushio and is surrounded by genjutsu seals.

19. Made offerings and held festivals for the tailed beasts. Specifically Gyuuki and Isobu. I imagine they wouldve resided near uzushio (thought not too close but enough to where sailor might see them and send praises to them while on their boats). Uzumaki temples (like the one Orochimaru used as a place to revive the hokages) were most likely set up maybe near old stalking grounds of tailed beasts.

I imagine there are hidden places like the temple with Gyuuki and Matatabi pictured around these temples or just around in general.

20. The uzumaki clan head acts as a kage of sorts. I believe the first official kage was Hashirama, but the practice of having a hidden village goes with multiple clans but being lead by one (main) person goes to Uzushio. Possibly in the early days of uzushios founding, the uzumaki started to let in people not of their clan and soon other clans entirely. The island of Uzushio can be dangerous to people who don’t know it and deadly to anyone who disrespects it and the Uzumaki were the only ones to know their way around the island. This lead to the Uzumaki clan leader slowly taking up the role as a village head since others (even other clan leaders) could not traverse Uzushio easily.

This way of leadership is not solidly dedicated to a “main branch” of uzumaki, but who ever is deemed worthy enough. Yes the role has been passed down through a pseudo main branch but the clan leader will take in students with promise and take a very active role in overlooking academy students and young shinobi.

21. Omg why is this so longggggg…. Anyways uhh this is more for me to build out Uzushio clans but the Yuki clan (Hakus clan) is from uzushio. They did live in more snowy areas but had a hard time trading and surviving in general and traveled until uzushio offered them a place in their village.

Okay trauma time (+ TW 3thn1c cleansing? How did we get here??) when ninja stormed Uzushio, the mizukage ordered that the Fuyuyoshi clan be taken for their kekkei genkai. The mist forced them to bend to their will in order to live and even made them change their clan name to Yuki in order to make them feel less connected to Uzushio. Funnily enough, the clan was moved back to the land of water and suffered due to a civil war that broke out amongst them and the mist residents already living there. Soon after they went into hiding due to persecutions of clan members with ice release and hid their kekkei genkai.

Like the uzumaki, they too went into hiding, afraid of being used or killed because of their power.

22. Okay why am I doing this to myself?? Anyways I made up another clan to fill out the world building. The Obake clan are a clan of people who can transform into animals, gaining whatever ability the animal can do. Any animal within the 100 pound (or 45.36 kg) range of their weight usually doesn’t take much effort to transform into. Other living things (besides plants) they can all theoretically turn into.

This comes at the cost of lots of chakra when they initially transform (no additional chakra will be used after transformation) and if they stay in animal state to long, they risk the total lost of their mind to a purely instinctive state of whatever animal they are. If someone manages to change back right before this state, they risk temporary dissociation, forgetfulness, emotional outbursts and resorting back to the animal behavior of whatever they were transformed as for that long period.

If someone changes back AFTER the mental shift, there is almost no way to get their human mind back. This can be combatted with frequent transformations and pushing their time limit but it is always a risk.

Even with these down sides, what makes them dangerous is that their chakra size will imitate the animal’s chakra size they take the shape of. Even some of the most highly skilled sensors cannot sense the difference between an Obake and a normal animal, making them excellent for infiltration and information gathering. Very rarely they will be spotted through their chakra, but people who have caught them have said it has a distinct human feeling once you notice it.

The Obake clan joined Uzushio after the Fuyuyoshi/Yuki clan, when during a rough patch for food, they tried to take Uzushio crops in carts that left the island. The uzumaki, being excellent sensors, noticed them but not right away and instead of creating conflict, they offered a place with food a shelter in uzushio for the Obake clan’s extraordinary kekkei genkai.

During the invasion on Uzushio, the raikage’s ninja tried to take uzumaki prisoners but failed because of the Obake clans protection over the people who offered them life when no one else would long ago. Many of the Obake died but a few were brought back to kumo to be used for their kekkei genkai. (TW SUI) It’s said that many of them took their own lives in order to not be used but there might be some still out there, hiding as animals to avoid the horrific alternative.

23. Past warring states era beef with the Yamanaka. Mostly bc I think this is funny. Yamanaka encroaching on uzushio crop land on the main land, uzushio didn’t like this and stole a scroll of a jutsu from the Yamanaka. The scroll was of a jutsu that allows someone to open their mind enough to enter it. Jinchuriki can do this because their minds have a more corporeal place when combined with their seal and tailed beast. Mostly this is just so whatever I may write in the future has an easier way to have other characters meet tailed beasts or smth. I also thought “hey why can’t other people do this? Why only jinchuriki? I want to see more into someone’s head.”

24. Less participation in war with other clans. Obviously it happened but because of them being on an island, less interactions were forced between them and other clans. The Senju, when in rough times, would call upon the Uzumaki for aide in trade of weapons, crops and information. Don’t get me wrong, they still warred with the uchiha, but it was less frequent than the Senju.

The uzumaki only tended to strike first if their land was taken, someone broke a treaty/agreement or harmed the Senju enough to require their intervention.

25. CREDITS TO “Of harrowed hearts” BY sable_scribe FOR THIS ONE!!! So in their fic, the uzumaki learned that any of the five standard elements can be learned naturally even if it’s not their affinity. I LOVE THIS ONE. It takes meditation and starting at a young age to achieve getting all the elements. I MEAN THIS IS GREAT CUZ IF ANYONE CAN HYPOTHETICALLY LEARN SAGE MODE WHY CANT THEY USE OTHER ELEMENTS?? Obv different for kekkei genkai BUT THE 5 MAIN SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE SINCE ITS CLEARLY A THING! It just would take a lot of training.

26. Invading Uzushio DID NOT let the enemy get like ANY seals or jutsu… when you have somebody with the chakra of ten people running after you, you aren’t going to have time to decipher whatever those seals are and break them. Invaders and even the kage thought that since the island was sealed, that security over jutsu and knowledge in general would be more relaxed inside the island. WRONG❌.

Uzumaki and the village as a whole used seals as an everyday thing. So they took people instead haha wow angst. Probably sold them off or kept them (like kusa with karin and her mom) but I can’t imagine (TW SUI) a lot of them would rather stay alive in whatever horrible situation they were in than to just seppuku first chance they got.

27. LAST ONE (for this post) I PROMISE!! So I’m deciding to take kusanagi sword and totsuka blade lore out back and putting it out of its misery. Now YES I’m aware that due to translation errors, that the kusanagi blade is A totsuka blade but I like to imagine that swords made by Ashura are all called totsuka blades. In my head, I feel like things THAT POWERFUL would take someone with SO MUCH CHAKRA it’s not even funny.

Also cmon… SEALED inside a sake bottle and it being a SEALING sword in general should make it an uzumaki thing NOT MENTIONING IT PUTS PEOPLE SWIRLING DIMENSION(?) YK?? UZUMAKI SWIRLS??? CMON PEOPLE. AND IN THE MANGA ITS IN A LIQUID LIKE STATE?? ARGHHHH THIS HAS UZUMAKI WRITTEN ALL OVER IT…….

Okay to sum up the yap abt swords: ashura made the kusanagi and totsuka “blades” (I imagine both being spiritual/the essence of a sword, not just the totsuka blade but also kusanagi), ashura descendents took both but when the uzumaki split off from the senju, they took the totsuka blade, totsuka blade gets carried off by a straggler uzumaki after the massacre to be hidden but accessible. Where? In an uzumaki temple of course! Itachi finds it only with the help with his mangekyo (bc weird Indra-ashura stuff idk) and thought it might’ve been important bc it looks different under a sharingan. Around the time of orochimaru leaving Konoha, orochimaru gets into Konohamaru forbidden jutsus and finds the kusanagi blade. He knows it’s important even though there is so little abt it documented and so he takes it.

I also think that the “essences” are able to attach to physical swords in order to be wielded (the totsuka blade attaches onto itachis susano and explains how orochimaru held it in his stomach basically without chocking it up to the usual “yea this guys a freak and can just Do That”)

Btw the totsuka blade was DEF held by the uzumaki clan leader at all times bc that’s just sick asf like imagine you are fighting them and they pull a sword out of a seal attached directly to their body… like maybe from the upper arm the opposite side of their dominant hand, their stomach, upper back, MOUTH, FOREHEAD….. chest? IM SORRY BUT IM A SUCKER FOR THE RAIDEN SHOGUN FROM GENSHIN AND SHURA KIRIGAKURE FROM BLUE EXORCIST LIKE I PROMISE ITS COOL AND NOT IN A GOONER WAY. (Cool side note but imagine the same bottle and therefore the sword it attaches to having the names of everyone sealed within it ETCHED onto it?? So many uchiha compared to other people)

Haha hi to the one person who made it down here…. Yea so def just build up to me writing backstory for my uzumaki clan leader oc who’s mitos sister… shes peak trust me guys I just gotta figure out how to draw her bc I find it nice to have a visual (not counting my chibi meme drawing I drew of her💔💔)
