Review of Opus Torrentia [DEMO]
Oh my god. Oh my god??? Oh my god.
I've been saying since forever that I want a new rpgmaker game with all the charm of the classics, but with something fresh to really give the community another kickstart. I truly believe that Opus Torrentia is that game.
The demo was a sweet 45 minutes (closer to an hour for me because I kept getting lost) full of charisma and oozing that classic rpgmaker style. The dialogue was close to Pen Palz (if anyone remembers that game) or OFF. The Earthbound inspo was incredibly obvious, which isn't a bad thing! I found it extremely fun, especially with the character designs. The little train was one of my fav designs in the game, very cute!
One small nitpick I have, is that when you have the alien goggles equipped, you can't run. Not entirely a problem, as you don't *need* to sprint with them on, but I found it slightly annoying. Really just a drop in the bucket compared to how much fun I had throughout the demo.
I CANNOT wait for this game to come out fully. It's a must play for any rpgmaker fans
Now that I've hyped it up, give it a shot! @galgopix is the creator, and the link is here

i WAS planning on doing a short magic girl themed vn for josei jam, but i've been weirdly burnt out lately, and haven't been able to get my ideas onto paper.
does anyone have any ways to break through writer's block? hopefully if i get over it this week i can actually start putting things down. i doubt i'll get it done by the end of the jam, but just getting a somewhat finished game out will do wonders.

Review Of Project 2Shot
I just finished playing through @sillymachiine 's Project 2Shot, and I wanted to get some of my thoughts and opinions down in hopes some people find it interesting and go searching for it themselves! All spoilers will be marked, and I highly suggest playing the game for yourself. It took me ~3 hours to complete it, but I've got a very fast reading speed.
Project 2Shot is a visual novel that shows us two separate death games. One that happens in 2010, and another in 2013. While at first, the games seemingly share nothing but a location, as things go on the lines between both events begin to blur, and the ties between the past and future begin to strengthen.
One thing I adored about this game was the character design. For a game with 19 main cast members, and 4 hosts, it can be very hard to make each design stand out. Silly was able to do this masterfully, breathing life into each character with their adorable style and charming details. My favorite designs from this game are Yako (who's my favorite character overall), Nana, and Iseri. And though the hosts were just silhouettes in this chapter, all four of them had very well defined silhouettes that made them still interesting to look at. I can't wait for the full design reveal, though I feel as though that'll come far later in the game.
Another thing I greatly loved about the game was the music! I think it was all original for the game, made by the creator himself. One small criticism I have is that sometimes the music didn't match the conversation at hand, but that'll come with more experience in game devving, along with a lot of the other gripes I have.
The biggest gripe being the writing. Not so much in the plot-important bits. Silly has a great way of writing urgency, and character led angst. But some of the down time writing could have benefited from an external editor with experience in visual novels. As far as I can tell, this is Silly's first ever visual novel, and they're undertaking the entire burden themselves. This is great! And I can understand the pride one gets from fully doing something by themselves. But having a more experienced person beta read the script would do wonders. Let me be clear, this isn't something that breaks the game. The writing isn't so atrocious as to make it hard to read. The grammar is fine, and though a bit awkward at times, the writing is fun overall. But it's very clear that this is her first game dev project, and thus there's room for improvement.
Alright, slight spoiler warning ahead. It's going to be vague as possible as to not ruin the game. But surprise: in the death game there's death.
THE DEATHS!
The main draw of the death game franchise. The terrible and horrible deaths. In the 2010 plotline, I think this was done incredibly well. There was that illusion of choice that's very important in a game like this, which ended in a heart wrenching moment. I think the motive could have been handled a bit differently, I don't know what the author was going for, but it felt like the hosts were throwing spaghetti on the wall to see what stuck. However I will admit, I wasn't expecting the climax of this plotline, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The 2013 plotline fell a bit flat. I think that the 2013 climax should have come before the 2010, because It would have ramped up the stakes instead of having them fizzle out. The first death in this plotline felt kinda lame? We had barely any connection to the character, and it felt more like blowing through fodder than it did a hook to the main series. I get why Silly didn't want to kill off any of the main cast in this chapter, as all their storylines weren't finished left, and there was a ton to explore with each of them, but having the character we barely know about get picked off first is hardly the hook for the next chapter I was wanting. Of course, I'm only assuming that this character won't become important later on due to it only being the first chapter. There is a ton of story left that's open for surprises. I'm excited to see what might happen next with this thread :)
Some other, smaller things I'd want in the next chapter
More puzzles! Not a ton, but maybe one or two? Just to break up the game play
Maybe a few more choices? They don't have to hold any consequence, maybe just allowing us to pick what we have to say. This doesn't make or break the game, but it could be fun.
Make the hangout events longer. A lot is said in the small one on one time we get with the characters, but I feel like we don't get a great grasp on their personality, and the relationship they have with each mc. Making them slightly longer, and maybe having a small story play out in each hang out event would be great!
Either way I can't wait for chapter two :]!!!

while this was a commentary on the american forces in iraq, this feels very relevant still. the use of an elusive mostly imaginary target gives them an excuse to exact violence upon civilian life

‼️‼️
If you're having trouble keeping up with what's going on in Palestine because of US news coverage of university protests, here are some articles you can read and a video you can watch:
youtube
While CNN & all the other mainstream media try to paint the university protests as "pro terrorism" (which they're not, they're literally anti-war protests.) Palestinians are being slaughtered by the minute.
Please don't stop speaking about Palestine.
