writing in the middle of the night is always such a gamble. who knows what I'll come up with? a masterpiece, so gut-wrenchingly beautiful that it'll leave you questioning the meaning of life? indecipherable gibberish, sentences so oddly structured that there's no way to tell where tf I was trying to go with them? best of luck to future me, she's gonna have one hell of a time finding out.

First things first, I love this. 💖

But given that my brain always defaults to 90s anime canon, I'm immediately thinking, 'Dang, but Mamo gets nuked on the plane in that one.' My next thought is, 'What if his flight is delayed?' and NGL, I'm so amused by the idea that the events of Stars could have been fundamentally altered by a simple flight delay. 😂

In some alternate timeline, when Galaxia came for Mamoru, Usagi also sensed it a split second before like he did, and both their Crystals flared, being like 'Nah, not this again', and put up a shield that Galaxia splatted against like a bug on a windshield (or vaporized, whatever you like).

With that out of the way, Mamoru was free to leave for America, but on a later flight, as he and Usagi spent some time in the airport cafe processing what just happened and reassuring each other. This may mean he had a chance to subtly assert his territory when a certain famous trio with a certain admirer walked by, trailed by a not so subtle mob, but we don't talk about that.

Mamoru kept his promise to write and call often, but what might otherwise have been thrilling stories in the life of a pre-med international student was overshadowed by Usagi's reports of strange Senshi showing up with a zombie-like demeanor and matching gaudy gold bracelets. Some of them meowed.

I wish I could say I know where this goes, but it's too early for that.

I'm currently struggle-bussing my way through the final chapter of Divergence, so there's a good chance I'll re-write this sentence a hundred times before I post, but:

The footwear was in sorry shape—the toe badly scuffed, the heel dangling from a thin strip of leather—but Usagi handled it with all the reverence of a holy relic as she carried it back to its rightful owner.

First of all, that expression on his face. ❤️😭😭💔

😢💔 Mamoru's storyline in the first season of the 90s anime is heartbreaking. He's all alone. His interactions with Usagi are mostly antagonistic as opposed to the manga where they fall for each other rather quickly. He's plagued by haunting, recurring dreams. He's been, what, blacking out during the first half of the season not knowing what in the heck he's doing? (What if he wakes up injured, covered in blood, what would he think is happening to him?) Then he realizes he's a superhero, starts pursuing the crystal wholeheartedly and recovers his memories only to be immediately kidnapped, tortured, and brainwashed by the enemy. Everything's he's been fighting to recover, he loses in an instant. And then, as you said, he wakes up at the end in a horrifying situation, only to die within minutes. Yes, manga Mamoru gets to live, but I can't help but wonder if the death and subsequent reset is something of a mercy.

I've given a lot of thought to Usagi's journey in the days and weeks following the revelation of their past lives, but Mamoru's journey doesn't really begin until his memories are restored at the end of the Makaiju arc. And as anime fans know, he goes right back into those traumatic dreams sent from the future (thanks future self). No wonder he's so quick to believe that he could hurt Usagi, when he likely still hasn't processed the trauma of what he did to her while he was brainwashed (regardless of how much we believe he remembers of that time, there had to be a second hand recounting of events at the very least).

Sigh. It's a rough go for this lonely orphan. He goes from a boy who wanted nothing more than to remember, to a man who carries so many memories he'd likely rather forget. 💔

Thinking about Dendy and how manga Dendy was super cruel to Usagi but really had none of his own agency and everything he did from act 11-13 was calculated and done for the sole purpose of obtaining the Silver crystal. Bro did not give 2 figs about anything else.

But 90s Dendy while still pretty cruel, was also simply carrying out orders with his own whims. Not the whims of Mamoru Chiba but Dendy had his own personality and goals unique to him if you think about it. Like he really is just taking the time to interact with Sailor Moon however he wants until he has to get back to business. Regularly has to say "btw im still your enemy you shouldnt trust me. Give me your crystal" after he hesitates to attack her, protects innocent cilvilians (who just happen to be her parents) and whisks her to safety (not within his job description) more than once. The cruelty of 90s Dendy comes from how the Dark Kingdom -specifically Queen Beryl- treated Mamoru. I think forcing him back into the armor of his past life was pretty cruel. Mostly because that armor was like a prison for him and probably became associated with bad memories for both he and Usa despite the memories they also had in SilMil.

Just a reminder, manga Dendy was playing on Usagi's familiarity with him. Whether it was something he was actually aware of or just information that Beryl fed him is up to debate. But his approach to his mission was specifically to get close to Usagi Tsukino in her cilvillian form. He definitely knew the whole time that Usagi was Sailor Moon and Serenity. Meanwhile 90s Dendy never intentionally interacted with Usagi. Only ever Sailor Moon and the one time he did Usagi was a stranger to him. Her identity meant nothing. He wasn't even allowed any kind of association with his life as Mamoru. Where Manga Dendy's cilivillian life was used to further the objective, 90s Dendy was kept as far away from his as possible.

By the end of it he's a puppet not even able to make his own choices as he was before. And when he finally comes back to his senses as Mamoru it just makes me think how he was so completely dragged into this after only just learning the truth about himself and Usagi as well and he "wakes up" wearing clothes from a life long past and the first thing he sees is the girl who has been fighting for her life and his battered and bruised by his hands. And the worst part is he doesn't even get the chance to do or say anything more than "thank you" and "goodbye" before he's attacked.

Like Mamoru never even met Beryl before that moment. He had no prior association with her and the second he comes back to himself she can't even accept him as anyone but the ideal prince she wants him to be and rips away any choice he had.

I dunno my heart just goes out to Mamoru whenever I see this 😭😭

At least Manga Mamoru was allowed to live at the end of the arc 😭😭😭
