I never bothered to watch that hbomberguy rwby video essay but someone who's never seen rwby watched it and was like he was clear and concise and had good points and he's bisexual himself so it seemed good. I don't know who else to ask abt what the problem is with the essay, if you don't mind, could you like. Sum up what the issue with thst essay was cause like. I don't know much abt it other than the general "it was bad faith"
there were a few things i know and other things i heard
first and the most major point is how he presents himself as having "always been a fan of Monty's" and for the most part solely attacks Miles and Kerry (at one point he apparently implicates that they're paedophiles, which is, y'know, an ad hominem character attack and nothing to do with the show he's alleging to critique) while putting Monty on a pedestal - however, his posts on the somethingawful forums about the show which were mere months before Monty's death shows that he not only had nothing but contempt for the show (which he barely watched in its first volume by his own admission), he hated Monty's entire body of work (dismissing Monty's first animation, Haloid, as "rip off a fight from the Matrix with lesbians" because at one point in that video, Monty referenced the Burly Brawl from Matrix Reloaded as if that isn't still an impressive technical achievement for a fan animation he made in his free time - it speaks to hbomb's weird contempt for and superiority complex over fandom in general, it's bad because it references things, Monty is bad because he is a cosplayer, etc. etc.) (link to more examples here). which makes his dedication to Monty at the end of the video even more galling and insulting (hbomb has a history of doing this - in his Sherlock video he dogpiles most of the faults on that show onto Moffat and apparently doesn't really draw attention to Mark Gatiss's contributions despite him being just as involved - it makes it look like hbomb has decided criticising a gay man or a dead man isn't great for his image so he scapegoats the other guys involved)
then there's the jackass he hired to make a song for the video who makes no bones about how the thing is presenting itself
there's also a lot of misrepresentation from what i know - at one point he alleges that the 'Dust robbery' storyline was dropped when... it wasn't. beginning of volume 2 Cinder outright says they're done with Dust (a highly volatile energy propellant) and then all the stolen cargo is seen on the train they're using to draw Grimm into the city for the Breach. so he's failing as a critic there just because he's clearly not paying attention. he claimed Sun was white at one point.
i know from an earlier version of the video that went up on Patreon that there was a section where he ripped into Barbara for posting a 'don't like don't watch' tweet, which likely got removed when someone must have mentioned the context for her tweeting that (some asshole had @'d her and Arryn an edit from the end of volume six of Blake and Yang stabbing each other). like it's bad enough he was gonna do that at all, but that in his months of research he either never bothered to find out what the context for that was for or worse, knew and didn't care until he found out how widely known the context was, again shows how much bad faith he was willing to go to
(there's also the fact that this video originally was pitched as 'RWB/Y is Garbage and here's why' and it seems like he only changed it to 'Disappointing' because the subreddit found out about it and they were part of the demographic he was trying to appeal to)

it's been a while but i also vaguely recall him basically expressing the viewpoint that the artists and animators working on the show, and the talented fan artists making art for the show, are wasting their time and talents on it when they could be doing something else. he also lists off a bunch of shows he thinks are better and says that "if the rwb/y fans watched these they wouldn't like rwb/y anymore" or something to that effect
in general he's just a contemptuous bastard about the whole thing who knows how to present his biased and flawed opinions (and petty grievances) as if they're objective fact better than the average rwbytuber self-described 'critic'
#i watched it a few weeks ago and it was shockingly bad#but blaming everything on miles and kerry while only being positive or neutral when mentioning monty was definitely the worst part#it became clear how much the video depends on finding acceptable targets to insult#which evidently wasn't monty so now monty couldn't have much to do with his own show according to hbg#also he straight up says rwby has no plot until partway into v3#sorry to rant in your tags

Commission I did for @rm0513 of these two getting suited up for night training
Pyrrha is almost entirely ready because and Jaune doesn’t even have his armor on because he keeps stopping to help her. She doesn’t need help, of course, but damn if it isn’t endearing

Any thoughts on what Oscar’s semblance will end up being? Since Oscar’s magic has come from Ozma and is more in line with “destruction” as a contrast to Ruby’s eyes which are tied to “creation”, I’ve often thought that it would make sense for Oscar’s semblance, as a means of self-affirmation to be something that also represents creation/preservation, which would make him more like Ruby and also find his own sense of who he is as a person. After all, if Oscar/Ozma are supposed to achieve a balance by the end then he should possess elements of both, no?
That said, the most common headcanon/theory I see for Oscar’s semblance has been for him to create barriers for defense… but not only can he already do that with Ozpin’s magic, I feel as though Jaune is actually the character who is more set up to have a defensive evolution for his semblance. There was the flash of light in V1 and his “it’s like a forcefield!” line, Vine’s comment about extending his aura, the shield grenades he used in V8, and just his general tendency to leap in front of people using his shield or body to protect people.
So, to me, this would be a bit of an odd choice for Oscar’s semblance and just make the existing overlap between Jaune and Oscar’s progression as characters more confused. Do you think I have the right idea with the theming of Oscar’s semblance? Or do you think it’ll come from a different place altogether?
Hi!
It is very difficult to say, cause there could really be many things that fit Oscar.
I agree about both Ruby and Oscar ending up having elements of both creation and destruction, as they are two philosophical children.
When it comes to Oscar's semblance, I think it will be worth the wait, since:
It will appear toward the end and there won't be time to slowly develop it, like Blake, Weiss or Ruby's
Ruby kind of told us so tbh, as she said when Oscar gets a semblance "everyone will be jealous" ;)
I think most semblances tie with the characters' allusions too:
Ruby is super fast cause she is Little Red Riding Hood, so she rides
Weiss's glyphs allude to the Snow Queen fairy tail, but progressively become more Snowhite-like (her summons are characters in Snow-White)
Blake's shadow is symbolic of the beast, as in jungian terms the shadow is also called inner beast
Yang's power has her become too hot, with her hair catching fire, like Goldilock
Jaune gives his aura (his spirit) to others to heal them (he makes miracles), which ties with his Jeanne d'Arc allusion (I agree with the fact he will become a barrier warrior to an extent btw)
And so on...
So, tbh the majority of ideas for Oscar's semblance seem to tie into this theme:
Some theory think his power will tie with time, as time is a recurring motif for him and Ozpin
Other theories (I think this one is @misstrashchan ) instead think he will get the ability to make an astral projection of himself, in a tie in to the Little Prince (the little prince dies, so he leaves his body behind). This could also be used to separate his own soul from Ozpin's
These are my two preferred theories, but again it is impossible to say for sure. I don't think there is much foreshadowing as to what Oscar's semblance will be, differently from Jaune's.
Thank you for the ask!

Actually no the whole holding onto and handing someone's weapon back to them as an indicator of the trust present in their relationship and representing returning said trust in returning the weapon to them is still playing on my mind. Since the only person we've ever seen hold onto Crescent Rose and hand it back to Ruby is Blake:
And given how Blake is consistently the person who believes and looks up to Ruby the most out of the group, it just makes so much sense that it would be Blake that we see hand back Crescent Rose to Ruby. She trusts her the most. (and yes, these does make me incredibly happy as someone whose first ship was ladybug)
On the other side we also have Jaune holding and tossing back Storm Flower to Ren as well, because he has complete faith in him and their ability to accomplish their goal together.
Jaune has also previously given Ren his shield in fighting against the Nucklavee in v4, which a lot of people overlook or forget about, but thinking back on it, it's kind of a big deal.
Without his shield, Jaune is temporarily without his defense, and he also can't combine it with his sword to rely on a greater offense (creating the giant sword). But he's willing to literally let down and give up his defense for Ren's sake, to shield him instead.
And I really don't think I need to go into how Blake and Yang both use Gambol Shroud in battle as an act of giving, returning, and holding on as the most extreme example of a trust exercise in the whole show.

The Blacksmith is not the Tree
A lot of people seem to have heard this:
Ruby: “Are you the Tree?”
Blacksmith: “You could say that, but that is a simplistic understanding of the Tree and what it does.” (Ep9)
And decided that yup, she’s the Tree. Simple answer accepted. Which is boring. And contradictory to what the show actually says. ‘But wait!’ you might say. ‘She helps Afterans Ascend. That’s what the Tree does! She even has a tree root growing up her back!’ These things are true, but I don’t think either of these things makes the Blacksmith and the Tree the same.
For one, the Blacksmith consistently refers to the Tree as separate to herself, as seen in the quote above. It’s not ‘I’, it’s not ‘we’, she doesn’t go back and forth between saying ‘I’ and ‘the Tree’. She always refers to the Tree as separate,. As in: “These brothers were the Tree’s earliest blossoms. […] The Tree did not foresee what they would become.” (Ep10)
Secondly, the Curious Cat also helps Afterans Ascend, by sending them to the Tree. It’s very clear that the Cat is not the Tree. The Curious Cat sends Afterans to the Tree, the Blacksmith helps them decide who (or what) they want to be, and then someone Ascends. The Blacksmith's close role with the Tree may be symbolized by her root spine, but that's only a part of her. The Blacksmith isn't the Tree any more than the Cat is. To bring it back to original quote, the Blacksmith is of the Tree the same way all Afterans are of the Tree. She came from and will return to the Tree, but it would be overly simplistic to call her the Tree.
However, I do think there’s a little more to her. There’s one character from the book that we never seemingly meet, and that’s the Lively Carpenter.
Weiss: “Of all the characters in the book, why did it have to be the Cat? Why couldn’t we have gotten help from the Lively Carpenter? Or the Rusted Knight?” (Ep4)
Like the Red King Ascended after meeting Alyx, I think so too did the Lively Carpenter. The Blacksmith says about RWBY+J, “The five of you have had a greater impact than you know. Just like Alyx and Lewis did before you, just like others will after you. One small kindness, in one small moment, led to such a marvelous transformation" (Ep10). Overtly, this is about Little becoming Somewhat. We can see the positive change that Ruby has had on them by their more complicated identity (being somewhat of a lot of things) and the cape they wear that is so obviously inspired by Ruby.

But the Blacksmith says this about Alyx and Lewis as well. While Alyx's broken promise did lead to the Cat's broken heart, the way the Blacksmith worded it implies that their impact lead to a "marvelous transformation" as well. In this case, I think it was Alyx’s small kindness, her wish to help Jaune even after she had died (left behind in her knife), that resulted in the Lively Carpenter's Ascension into the Blacksmith (also the emphasis on weaponry, not just when talking to Ruby, but in her workshop as well). The Blacksmith took up Alyx's wish to "fix everything [Alyx] had broken in the Ever After, including poor Jaune" (CC Ep9). She is the one to hold onto Alyx's knife (her wish) and give it to Jaune.

(As an aside, the Blacksmith may have expanded her role to help others in the Ever After as well, as it's stated Alyx wanted to do. Arguably, the Blacksmith's role in Ascension isn't strictly needed, but it is helpful. It could be that this wasn't the role of the Lively Carpenter (or perhaps the Lively Carpenter just didn't offer guidance like the Blacksmith does) and she didn't take on this role until post-Alyx. That could be why the Red King had such a regressive Ascension, although she can't force people to make good decisions so that's not proof. It's not important to proving my point. I just think it's a neat idea and brings Alyx's impact (helping Afterans through Ascension) to be more on par with Ruby's (multi-faceted identities over singular purpose) in terms of having "a greater impact." Anyways).
Notably, the Blacksmith is still associated with woodworking, like we would expect the Lively Carpenter to be , as we see her carving wooden figurines.

Like Somewhat wears a cape like Ruby, the Blacksmith is literally wearing a copy of Alyx’s blue bandana, just in a different way (honestly the wires that make up part of her hair may be inspired by the stripes on Alyx's dress).

Perhaps, like the Paper Pleasers wanted to be more resilient and became the Genial Gems, the Lively Carpenter wanted to use more resilient material when helping Afterans and became the Blacksmith.
Tldr: The Blacksmith Ascended from the Lively Carpenter (inspired by Alyx), isn’t the Tree, and didn’t create the Brother Gods. So please, stop calling her their mom.
#this has been bugging me since v9 ended#rwby#rwby blacksmith#rwby alyx#rwby v9#the blacksmith is important but there's a distinction between her and the tree itself#rwby analysis
