Color Symbolism in Marble Hornets

[this is an excerpt from a larger project im working on where i go through entry by entry and take note of all the symbolism but i was really excited to notice this today and want to share ahead of time! my source is the mh wardrobe post i made a while back]

Alex’s most definitive color is blue and Brian is most often seen in greens and blues, while Tim and Jay typically wear reds or browns. This isn’t a hard and fast rule necessarily, but just by looking at the majority of wardrobe colors, you can gain the association that there is a warm/cool color dichotomy is fairly straightforward to what role the character is taking (or what role they appear to be taking) at the moment, with reds, browns, and oranges showing victimization and lack of power, and blues and greens showing the opposite.

The most interesting conclusions actually come from when characters break their associated color palettes, because it almost always coincides with the character breaking their usual role in the story as well. Starting with Tim, in the last few entries he is seen wearing cool colored flannels while trying to finish Jay’s investigation, but in Entry #87 he’s back to his typical red flannel, representing his emotional journey through the depression and turmoil of losing Jay, finishing his mission, and resolving to move on. Tim also wears blue in Entry #75, a time when he is trying to hide something from Jay. Of course, his heart was in the right place all along, but to the audience’s (and Jay’s) perspective at the time, he was hiding something that incriminated him. This same mask applies in Entries #52 and #53, where he has yet to become a full character to the plot and appears extremely suspicious. He is also wearing blue in #59, where he punches and chews out Jay for what he’s done, blaming him for what happened. While he is partially right, he also is once again taking on a narrative role similar to Alex in that moment. 

Others have noticed this before, but Entry #82 is the last chronological time Jay is seen wearing brown, and afterwards is seen wearing a bright green shirt, showing how the encounter changed his mental state from one of the victim to one seeking to harm Tim for what he had hidden, never breaking out of that mindset of hurt and anger and ultimately not even getting to die as himself. The only times Jay is seen wearing the green shirt that marks him as “changed” before his encounter with the Operator in #82 is in Entries #35 and 36 (where he helps tie up Masky and then still agrees to follow Alex’s lead afterwards), 48 (this time literally following Alex, straight up stalking him), and 75 (where he steals Tim’s tape). Entry #75 is particularly interesting, because he walks out of therapy wearing green, showing us that the help he got came just a moment too late. Tim is also wearing blue in this Entry, appearing as an Alex-like enemy to Jay, while unbeknownst to him in green, he’s still following Alex’s lead and doing what he would’ve done. The only times Jay is seen wearing blue (without his brown hoodie covering it up as an undershirt) are in Entry #50, where he breaks into Alex’s house and steals a tape from him, and of greater note, in Entry #74 where he refuses Tim’s help. 

Alex is seen wearing an orange-pinkish shirt in Entries #42, 46, 47, 71, and 76, all times when he was trying to trick others into believing he was the hero and victim. The only time Alex wears white is during Entry #14, where he inflicts the stigmata upon himself, believing himself to be an almost Christ-like figure, pure and victimized. In Entry #55, he is wearing a red shirt, footage of him taken when Tim is explaining his medical history in the background, appearing as a victim of Tim’s monster. All other times in the series he is wearing a cool color palette. 

The only time Brian wears warm colors is in Entry #51, where he is quite literally victimized, and in all entries where he is acting as Hoodie, the red bleach stains on his mask just a sad face painted on over a manipulator, making himself out as someone who is just a powerless victim while secretly pulling strings and toying Jay’s investigation along. His majority cool-colored wardrobe also relates him to Alex, and once again shows their narrative parallels. 

Meanwhile, Jessica is almost always wearing black and white, and the colors she does wear are perfectly evenly split between warm and cool (wearing a red shirt once, a blue cardigan once, and a purple blouse once). This likely refers to how out of place she is in the story, a bystander caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile in her comic spinoff, she typically wears a brown and red uniform, only wearing other colors when wearing a purple blouse in an opening page (neutral in the color dichotomy), and blue while in the hospital (during which she lies about the issues she’s facing and snaps at Taylor). Her development into wearing brown and red (Jay’s signature colors) shows how she’s developed into the protagonist of her own life, becoming used to dealing with the issues she’s victimized by. However, in Issue 3, she’s back to her black and white attire as she rewatches the Marble Hornets entries and discovers her past, showing how she’s out of her element once more (I could analyze the comics more, but I’m waiting for all issues to be released first, so back to what this color coding actually means). 

The warm/cool color dichotomy also relates to the fire/water parallels set up, but interestingly in the opposite direction as typical color associations, with reds typically associated with fire (danger, the Operator) and blues typically associated with water (safety, the ark). However, the color symbolism, instead of being one to one, could instead line up if taken to mean that warm colors that symbolize victimization show that the characters are closer to danger, and the cool colors that symbolize power and aggression show that the characters have more control over the situation and are therefore technically safer, despite the moral implications of what that power really means in action.

I have such a complicated relationship with this little word.

On one hand, this mushy, tender thing is all I ever want in life. The gentle touches, the soft murmurs of late-night confessions, the feeling of handing someone a gun to point at your heart knowing full well they'll never pull the trigger. I want it so badly. Hell, I crave it like a damn drug. But then a moment later the same thing can disgust me like no other. The word love rots in my mouth, just thinking about being intimate with someone will make my stomach roll, the barrel pressed against my chest no longer feels like a risk worth taking. This is repulsing. Love, is repulsing.

I just wish my heart and mind can stop the war they're waging against each other for once so I can make up my mind. Or is this what I'm destined to do for the rest of my existence?
