A Small Win
“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art”. - Andy Warhol
July 2019 is the last time that I wrote my feelings out on the page. I started writing in my undergraduate college years, when I was the farthest down in my whole of depression that I would ever see so far. It gave me breathe when I couldn’t breath, allowed me to see clarity when I was building walls around me, and provided a platform for me to share with others in hopes of making at least one other person feel less alone. Over the years the postings that were once effortlessly written out on the page in the middle of the night, became pressed for perfection.  As I review old posting I can see the highs and lows that I endured. If only that girl knew how far we have come and all that we have overcome.
In my last post, I was one year into a position that challenged my triggers and self-esteem daily, in all the wrong ways. A year later, the entire would would face a pandemic, a experience I had never imagined occurring in my lifetime. These stories are supposed to only exist in the textbooks, right? I worked throughout the pandemic in a health care system, with changing rules and guidelines somedays by the hour. A year into the pandemic I began searching for alternative employment opportunities, only to find limited opportunities with my educational background. As fear attempted to hold me back I decided to enroll in a graduate program with the realization I would have to continue working full-time, attend school part-time and complete 20 hours of an internship weekly. I was accepted within the same week of my application and started classes January 2021. I sought a internship opportunity which would bless me in more ways that I could have ever expected. I created lifelong friends, found people who would remind me of how valuable I am and help advocate for me to change positions in a time I thought it wasn’t possible. Transitioning out of social work for about a year was heartbreaking for me, but never once did my internship fail to remind me that I am a social worker on all levels, and offered me a PRN position a month after completing my internship hours. In those years, I cried often as I struggled with my identity, finding my worth and facing my fears of failure all at the same time. Outside of my personal life, my family life and friendships were continuously being rocked. As the tears fell the emotions weren’t being processed, so I sought therapy in my last few months of graduate school. I completed a few sessions before entering into EMDR where I did two intensive sessions that were life changing. Therapy holted when  I graduated in May 2022 with my Master in Social Work, and obtained my APSW in August 2022, after accepting my dream job as a hospice social worker. I celebrated these accomplishments with my friends and family, I thrived in the chaos of change for once in my life.
Now I am here, six months out finding myself building walls again. I have a list of goods in my life from my family, friendships, employment and housing. All to find myself resistant to digging deep and turning inward once again. I hope to find myself back here more, writing on the page. Remembering who I have been, how far I have come, meeting myself, and sharing hopes for my future. As for now, I am going to call this little comeback to processing on the page a win.

Virgin Voyages - Mayan Sol 2.0
Day 2 June 6, 2022 - Sailing
Our day started at Razzle Dazzle (Vegan Forward) restaurant dining. As Jenna partook in morning cocktails I had a bariatric smoothie and orange juice. We tried an array of foods: jalapeno cheddar croissant, apple cruffin, avocado toast, fairy toast, potato tots, impossible burger, and a goat cheese frittata. Our meal ended with a sampling of desserts consisting of a chocolate cake, and cookies with special cereal milks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prior to leaving our room we had asked it be rearranged for us to try the split bed. Throughout our first day sailing we got to enjoy it as a sofa.
Tumblr media
Our first class was on balance which was quite informative in explaining the importance of proper footwear and catering to our four arches. In this room there are several other courses available. We had hoped to participate in the bungee workout, but it wasn’t available during our cruise. I look forward to it on a future trip.
Tumblr media
In the afternoon we grabbed some snacks at The Galley with an iced coffee. We tried a vegan chocolate tart, pistachio raspberry macaroon, passion fruit dessert, and coconut treat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed to the back of the ship for some cocktails and were served shrimp, watermelon, chicken and steak tacos. I received a job offer on this day of our adventures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After hanging about exploring the ship we headed to Apertivo with the Foodie event at the Italian restaurant on board. We had a charcuterie board, smoked chicken liver mousse and artichokes. Jenna ordered a negroni and I had a traditional Bellini to drink.
Tumblr media
Our late afternoon was spent having Cocktails with the Unicorn in the Manor, where we got to hear Levi, who is an amazing singer, share a few songs with us. I was able to have a homemade pineapple daiquiri here that was phenomenal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we had some rest and relaxation we found ourselves back at Extra Virgin (Italian) restaurant for our dinner. During this experience we had a window table enjoying calamari, meatballs, wagyu, gnocchi and oxtail ravioli followed by steak and phenomenal dessert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Red Room is where we ended our evening with a night show performance. When we returned our beds were made separately and we settled in with a movie.

Virgin Voyages - Mayan Sol
Day 1 June 5, 2022 - Fort Lauderdale to Miami
Jenna and I headed out of our Ft. Lauderdale hotel by the noon hour and headed to Miami for our 1pm check in at port. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the friendliest of crew members. During the process of our check in we sought the opportunity to upgrade our room from a limited view terrace to a sea terrace, which ended up being well-worth the price.
Tumblr media
Once we arrived on board we headed straight to our room and admired our ocean view.
Tumblr media
In The Galley we picked up some starter treats since we had not eaten yet for the day. As we enjoyed our chicken coconut soup, sushi, tacos and treats we scheduled our events for the week ahead. We booked a work out, informational session, drinking events, and shows to fill our time on board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we booked our pedicures for later in the week, we were able to tour the spa before trying some iced coffee and ice cream prior to the push back event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We started out by the pool before relocating to the high deck. It was great to see the crew truly enjoying themselves along with the sailors as they settled in. After several glasses of champagne we headed to our first dinner reservation at The Wake (Steak House). We started with some cocktails and clam chowder before experimenting by trying bone marrow for the first time. Jenna and I split the salmon and filet mignon for dinner followed by incredible desserts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spent some time on our unobstructed view balcony prior to catching some rest.

Ozaukee County - March 2022
When we initially entered into “adulthood” at the age of 18 we walked 5 minutes across campus to make plans. At the age of 21, we hollered from our bedrooms or walked the 10 steps it took to get to the other's door frame. Now in our late twenties, further into adulthood we plan months in advance to see one another for a visit. Even though scheduling can be challenging, it sure is worth the wait.
Saturday, March 19, 2022
I drove up to Grafton, WI after class on Saturday for a short weekend visit to Tiffany. After getting settled we decided on dinner at the tried and true Stilt House as some of the items are leaving the menu. I ordered a bloody mary to drink and we shared the pull apart bread with truffle butter as an appetizer. I would order both of these again! Each of us ordered the Cuban - el jefe with avocado as it sadly will be leaving the menu after this month. It was well worth the entire meal. On top of that we split the sweet potato fries with maple bacon aioli. Once we filled our bellies we were onto our next adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We traveled into Mequon, WI where we attended college with limited exploration, and explored the Ruby Tap Wine Bar. It was a great experience trying different wines. I look forward to going again and trying out some of their charcuterie options as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our final destination for the evening was a Board & Brush event. As two perfectionists it is hard for us to demonstrate our artistic abilities so it was a good challenge to push us both outside of our comfort zones. Tiffany selected a Wisconsin decorative tray to create, while I worked on a coat rack. I had a blast staining the wood, working out the stencil and painting to end up with a forever treasure to hang in our homes. I would be open to doing another one in the future for some holiday decorations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we finished and left we debated going out or going home. In our late twenties we both agreed that we would prefer to go home and watch some Netflix. On our way we picked up potentially needed snacks at Meijer and ended up stopping at Crumbl in Grafton before heading home. It was a first time experience for me inside Crumbl and I am obsessed!
Tumblr media
Sunday, March 20, 2022
We got around to attend Sunday brunch at Foxtown Brewing in Mequon. I ordered the berry Belgian waffle, which was great. I do believe there could be a step up on their maple syrup game but let’s be honest I may be a maple syrup snob. Tiffany had the spicy chorizo hash with a white bronco as the beverage. After spending the morning chatting we decided to head into Cedarburg to run my traditional errands when I am in the area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once parking in Cedarburg we realized it was the perfect day to enjoy being outside for a walk. We headed down to the Oil Sprig where I picked up the traditional balsamic and Tiffany purchased a chipotle olive oil. Next, we traveled into Cedar Creek Settlement checking out the new Apothecary shop. Cream & Crepe Café was still located there which makes me pleased for my future visits as I think it’s truly amazing. We headed down into the winery where I purchased Pearadise and Belle Blue, two wines I have never tried before but sounded perfect for this coming summer weather. After leaving the settlement we headed back down the street discussing the food we would like to try in the future from this area. Our final destination was Amy’s Apple, where I stop each time I am in the area. If you haven’t tried a caramel apple from Amy’s you’re missing out and must make a stop when nearby! I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the caramel apples available here. As we headed home we started making a list of places we would like to go on a future visit. Can’t wait for more adventures to come!

Denver - February 2022
Thursday, February 3rd
I headed to the Milwaukee airport at 7:30 with a landing time in Denver shortly after noon. Emmett picked me up in my proclaimed location after I turned myself around in the airport. We made the traditional stop at Starbucks on our way back to the house. Emmett and Laine finished up their day's work as I relaxed on the sofa snuggled up to my niece, Hazelnut.
Tumblr media
We ate dinner at their favorite local Mexican restaurant, La Palmas 1. We were served phenomenal margaritas and I ordered the shrimp tacos. I would hands down order them again. After dinner, we returned to home to catch up on life over the last several months and give our stomachs a bit of time before heading out for a sweet treat.
Tumblr media
Our evening ended with a stop at Nuggs Ice Cream only a few minutes from their house. There are so many options I was eager to try, but decided on the PB&J that had strawberry jelly in it. Laine was pleased with her hot fudge sundae too.
Tumblr media
Friday, February 4th
Our morning started with working all around. As Laine and Emmett met with their clients and interns. I spent the morning making appointments and on hold with Federal Loan servicing. Once all was finished we headed out to some brunch at Denver Breakfast Company. Laine ordered the Strawberry Shortcake, while Emmett and I split ours in half. We ordered the Dalia and Tomahawk. I must say the Dalia was a full win for me.
Tumblr media
After brunch we headed around to some thrift stores and local stops to fill our day. We planned to end our evening with bruschetta from Postino’s but after hearing over an hour wait we decided to head next door to Hopdoddy Burger Bar. Emmett and I ordered beers the size of our heads, and the shareable parmesan truffle fries for the table. Laine tried the vegetarian burger and was pleased with the results. I ordered the Magic Shroom Burger without the Mushrooms. It felt a little wrong, but boy was it a great decision. We enjoyed this stop so much we ended up coming back for our last meal together.
Tumblr media
Following dinner we stopped at Gelato Boy on the way back to the parking structure. I ordered a small dish that came with two flavors; selecting pistachio and caramel macchiato. Hands down I would order pistachio again and for sure skip the caramel macchiato. Laine and Emmett both ordered shakes. Laine’s was a chocolate brownie and Emmett’s was London Fog which was surprisingly amazing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday, February 5th
My morning started with my first ever Dutch Bros. coffee ordering the bald eagle, while Hazelnut got to attend a visit to the vet.
Tumblr media
After a pup drop off at home, we headed back out to check out a local bakery we passed the day before called Good Bread. I have to point out, you know it is a good bakery with quality products when their closing time is set but when items sell out. We elected to split items picking up a passion fruit cruffin, almond croissant, and a baklava escargot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before heading back to the house we stopped at Hot-Chick-A-Latte Denver with barista babes serving up coffee and Italian sodas. Laine ordered a raspberry italian soda that was incredible!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday afternoon Emmett and I headed to the tattoo shop. He ended up having three bands around his right wrist, and I had my birth flowers placed on my left forearm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our evening wrapped up with dinner and cards at Mom and Libby’s house for the evening.
Sunday, February 6th
After a long weekend of running around we took the morning off before heading out to brunch at Annie’s Cafe. I ordered the Snickerdoodle Latte and Skip’s Monte Cristo. Laine had Emily’s Grilled Cheese with Fries, while Emmett ordered the T-Bird substituting the pancakes for the Valentine’s Strawberry and Cream ones. It is confirmed that I will request to visit here again on my next adventure out to Denver as the food was incredible, and Mom promised me a good jalapeno margarita one day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spent the afternoon driving into the mountains.
Tumblr media
Ending with dinner at Hopdoddy Burger Bar, where I ordered the exact same thing, and spent the rest of our time together talking at home.

Virginia - September 2021
Visiting Virginia
Tumblr media
Saturday, September 11, 2021
I arrived in Baltimore, MD to stay with Jenna and Bradley for a much needed weekend getaway. We stopped at Baltimore Coffee for an iced latte and split a breakfast sandwich. I am positive you can’t go wrong with either purchase.
Tumblr media
We headed toward home, stopping for lunch at Roots 657 in Leesburg, VA. Jenna loves their chicken tenders and corn pudding. I am always a fan of their chocolate cake!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed out to hit up a few of the local farm stands. I tried to convince my father I became a tomato farmer in a few short hours in the state.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Otium was our first winery stop. An upscale venue that has a great outdoor patio area to take in the great hills that Virginia has to offer. We shared a bottle of the Dornfelder, which I loved but my alcohol flush reaction thrived on.
Tumblr media
Firefly Cellars was the next stop. I love good photo opportunities, food trucks and live music so we enjoyed this environment very much. While Jenna tried a wine flight, Bradley and I split the Cabernet Sauvignon. Both of us ended up taking a bottle home. Together we split a charcuterie board, one of which we all did enjoy, specifically the cheese and meats provided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zainy’s Flyin’ Grill was the food truck present, serving up elote corn and puffy tacos. We each enjoyed our own taco, and would certainly check them out again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we entered the evening I needed a little pick me up. We ordered coffee at Happy Creek Coffee which has CASHEW MILK as an amazing option. I ordered the latte with cinnamon, cardamom and cashew milk. It was phenomenal!
Tumblr media
Jenna, Bradley and I ventured out again hours later to have some dinner at Silver Diner, a restaurant that has a goat cheese bruschetta that pulls at my heartstrings. We ended the evening with a shake that is a must have with every stop at the diner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunday, September 12, 2021
Jenna and I started the morning off right at Bufford’s Biscuits. Our cravings were much bigger than our stomachs on this one. We ordered a cathead biscuit with gravy flight, jalapeno corn hush puppies, and the cure sandwich.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were stuffed well into dinner time. Jenna and I did our running around the local TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls which is a must do whenever we are together. We ended the night in Chantilly having dinner at Lazy Dog. If you go, I recommend the sangria for a beverage, and start with the goat cheese + pepper jelly appetizer. It is a keeper that’s for sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monday, September 13, 2021
We started off with a lazy morning at home. I packed my belongings for my evening flight out, Bradley worked and Jenna hung around. Jenna and I got some headshots for her new adventures as a travel agent. We took a sister trip to SideBar, where we enjoyed our happy hour wine, sriracha wings, cheese ball, calamari, and cauliflower wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I flew back home to Wisconsin later that night.

Iowa - July 2021
July 2, 2021
Mom and Dad headed out for Iowa first in order to pick the kids up from the airport. Jenna and Bradley flew into Omaha. All of them arrived earlier in the evening, where the kids were able to see their new bed in the computer room for the first time. I arrived shortly after midnight to find Dad waiting up for me, and everyone else tucked in their new beds asleep.
Tumblr media
After waking up around 10AM the next day, we headed to have lunch in Corning. We stopped at ACS to snap a few photos with no other fans around. We swung by Three C’s to pick up our lunch and headed over to Lake Icaria State Park to enjoy the breeze by the picnic tables overlooking the water. We ordered loins, mac n cheese bites, sweet potato tots, and onion rings. Oh don’t forget they have the best unsweetened iced tea around!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We took a rest at home in the afternoon before Dad and I hauled out the old mattresses to the burn pit. Jenna and Mom stayed at home mixing up Grandma Connie’s recipe for homemade ice cream. We spent time enjoying the evening out on the deck watching our pool fill and ice cream churn itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
July 3, 2021
Our first stop of the morning was to the Corning Bakery, which I have highlighted as a must stop shop each time we are in town and it is open. Jenna couldn’t pass up stopping at Three C’s for more iced tea on our way back home. We spent the afternoon around the farm.
Tumblr media
Jenna forced Bradley to dance with her in the living room.
Tumblr media
Everyone joined my hillbilly pool party in the shade of our backyard tree. Bradley and I read for a while, before Jenna became lively and drew him into some kite adventures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grandma Pat came by the house in the evening to enjoy some ice cream. It was too hot for a visit outside, but we were able to enjoy some time together at the kitchen table indoors. We ended up settling on dinner in town at Casa De Oro.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
July 4, 2021
We took a slow start to the day, after lunch we enjoyed some time outdoors flying kites once again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After much convincing Dad allowed us kids to power wash the house, a task that took over two hours. Bradley and I agreed we would both sit down in the freezing cold pool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we all cleaned up we got around and headed into town to watch fireworks. We headed back home for a driveway firework show performed by Bradley, and ended with some smores in the driveway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
July 5, 2021
We spent the morning watching home videos from our childhood. Jenna also made the family Ube Waffles from Trader Joe’s. Dad got the tractor running by noon and we all got to go out and take it for a ride. Jenna is by far a superior driver than I am.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the early afternoon I headed out towards Wisconsin to return to work life. As I excited towards the highway I stopped by the Rock in Greenfield to view the new art that is changed each memorial day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a pit stop in Prairie City, Iowa at Goldie’s to pick up some fried banana peppers and a monster cookie mixer. I arrived home later that evening. It was so good to have a long weekend in Iowa together as a whole family.

Virginia - March 2021
Friday, March 5th
I submitted my final paper for my first graduate school course before heading to bed for a couple hours of sleep. In the morning I would rise for a new adventure.
Saturday, March 6th
I woke up at 4AM, gathered my belongings and headed to the Milwaukee Airport. Whether I was too tired to recognize my anxiousness or achieved a new stepping stone of personal growth my airport anxiety was nowhere to be found, and I was quite proud of this early morning accomplishment. I landed in Baltimore, Maryland around 10AM where I was greeted by Jenna and Bradley. Our first stop was Baltimore Coffee (https://www.baltcoffee.com/). I picked a sweet drink called Iced Snickers. It was a bit rich to start the day but worth it if you desired an afternoon treat.
Tumblr media
We headed to lunch at IXtapalapa Taqueria (https://www.ixtataqueria.com/), a location Bradley had raved about after their last visit. To drink I enjoyed an authentic lime margarita and a horchata to go. We snacked on chips, guacamole, and elote corn before our main food arrived. I ordered two tacos and Bradley had the mole enchiladas, his favorite. After our meal we headed home to Virginia with leftovers in hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we arrived at the house the rush of travel had passed and I was exhausted after a week of late night homework sessions. I took a 40 minute recoup nap while Jenna got around for a day of adventure.
In the early afternoon we went to a local gas station called The Filling Co (https://www.fillingco.com/) where we picked up Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches (https://www.nightingaleicecream.com/). I later enjoyed the Strawberry Shortcake sandwich that had a brown sugar cookie and strawberry ice cream inside. We added a few additional snacks including deep fried Oreos for National Oreo Day, and a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich which was a life changing experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our afternoon was spent relaxing at home before we attempted an evening meal out in the community. We returned home prior to our meal being served due to the location not following COVID precautions. Bradley and I spent the remainder of the evening building the new wine rack I had bought after my last visit and took over an hour rearranging the living room only to have it right back to the previous setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunday, March 7th
Jenna and I headed into Leesburg for Buford’s Biscuits (https://www.bufordsbiscuits.com/). We reviewed the menu the night before and decided to split the Nashville Chicken and Blue Ridge biscuits. Jenna surprised me at the table with an order of Molasses Chocolate Chip Cookies & Milk. The biscuits were amazing! It was a quaint location with minimal choices but phenomenal options that the simplistic menu made perfect sense. I will certainly request we visit again on a future trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we left breakfast we made a pit stop at Mom’s Apple Pie (https://www.momsapplepieco.com/) in which I picked up a Blueberry Crumb Slice for my trip home to Wisconsin. On our way home we swung by Dolce & Ciabatta (https://dolceciabatta.com/) to pick up my morning coffee and all-time favorite eclair. In true Williamson sister’s tradition we drove by a farmer’s market sign on the way home, pulled a u-turn and took a stroll. I was able to pick up some Twin Oats (https://twinoats.com/collections/oat-bites) Vanilla Oat Bites and we purchased some Apple Cider to share throughout the weekend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our afternoon was spent relaxing before taking a trip over to tour Maggie’s new house and return her sweet pup, Greta. After the home tour Bradley headed to work while Jenna and I enjoyed an afternoon of Happy Hour at SideBar (https://www.sidebarlbg.com/). Jenna and I started off with wine and cocktails, followed by all the goods. We ordered calamari, deviled eggs, maple sriracha wings, and General Tso's cauliflower. We spent hours enjoying each other's company and snacking away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In true Hanna fashion we ended up at more than one local TJ Maxx before heading out to a late night dinner at Silver Diner (https://www.silverdiner.com/) which serves my all-time favorite goat cheese bruschetta. We arrived home late into the evening with enough time to visit with Bradley before we all headed off to bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monday, March 8th
Bradley was alive and working early in the morning while Jenna and I slept in late. After much harassment from the energetic Bradley we got around and headed to Reston Town Center (https://www.restontowncenter.com/) to get our day started. Upon our arrive Jenna ran into Ted’s Bulletin (https://www.tedsbulletin.com/) while I watched over the vehicle in our unpaid parking spot. Jenna came back with several homemade pop tarts for me to take back home to Wisconsin. Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls (https://masonslobster.com/) was the true destination of our adventure this morning. We ordered for pickup and enjoyed a car picnic down the street. I can’t say enough about the Connecticut Lobster Roll. We too shared the Lobster Mac & Cheese and I ate most of the Clam Chowder Soup when we arrived back home. Another location that I will request to come back to again and again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before leaving we went to pick me up a morning coffee which ended up being hot chocolate and pistachio gelato from Pitango Gelato (https://www.pitangogelato.com/).
Tumblr media
Once we arrived back to the house I did a happy dance in the kitchen as I ate the amazing clam chowder soup we had left over from Mason’s. It fueled my motivation to pack my belongings for my travels back to Wisconsin later in the day. In good foodie fashion I couldn’t leave without getting calamari one last time from SideBar. We did a pick up order and enjoyed our calamari and deep fried cookie dough in a local parking lot, it was quite the odd combo I tell you. Jenna and I headed next into a new coffee shop called Goose Cup (https://www.goosecup.co/). It was a much higher end coffee joint that I originally anticipated from hearing the name. Jenna and I ended our afternoon again relaxing at home before driving me out to the airport. I navigated the airport before catching my nearly empty flight back to Wisconsin around 8PM. I arrived back at my apartment around 10PM, preparing for a long work week ahead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My trip out to Virginia was unlike any other as we rested, relaxed and enjoyed food with the company of one another. Most trips are a series of planned events that keep us going all day and night. In the months building up to this trip my life has been filled with work and non-stop schooling. I found it rewarding to have a vacation away that truly felt like it nourished my soul with some time of rest and bits of adventure mixed in. Goodbye Virginia, until we meet again.

Virginia - December 2020
In the months leading up to November 2020, I had debated attending graduate school in the state of Wisconsin or Virginia. When it came down to the cost, it was the best decision to stay as an in-state resident for graduate school. I was accepted by George Williams College to start pursuing my Masters in Social Work in January 2021. With no clarity into my next opportunity for a trip out to Virginia I decided to go before starting school in the new year.
Saturday, December 5th
I woke up early and headed to Milwaukee for my flight to visit Jenna & Bradley in Virginia. I landed around 10AM. Bradley picked me up and had planned our first stop at a coffee shop, Cafe Amouri (https://www.caffeamouri.com/) in Vienna, Virginia. Bradley ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte and I ordered the Gingerbread Latte, both were incredible options. I would make sure to stop at this location again when in the area. I felt they did a great job managing ordering and contactless pickup during the COVID pandemic. Bradley and I caught up while Jenna completed her sleep after an overnight shift. When Jenna awoke we headed out for lunch and a full day ahead.
Tumblr media
I have a soft spot for Bartaco (https://bartaco.com/location/reston/) since it was one of my highlight restaurants the first time I came out to Virginia. If you know me well you know I am in a constant state of craving mexican food and elote corn. We ordered Guac, Street Corn and a variety of tacos. I decided I am not a fan of the Crispy Oyster Taco that Bradley is fond of, but I am down for the Glazed Pork Belly Taco any day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jenna drove us to Amphora Bakery (https://amphorabakery.com/) where we were able to see the treat artists at work in the back room. Bradley picked up some delicious decorative sugar cookies and I selected a magic bar. I decided that in the future the sugar cookies are most definitely the best way to go!
Tumblr media
In an attempt to stay local for the early afternoon we stopped for a wine flight at Fleetwood Farm Winery (https://fleetwoodfarmwinery.com/). Bradley and I enjoyed the variety as many of them were dry. Jenna passed up on several as she prefers the sweeter side of wine. Several other guest were ordering the pizza to pair with their wine, so that may be a good try for a future visit.
Tumblr media
As a tradition I requested that we snag up a treat from Mama's Apple Pie (https://www.momsapplepieco.com/)  in Leesburg, Virginia. I selected the Boston Cream which was good but nothing can compare the outstanding fruit pie varieties that are offered at each of their locations.
Tumblr media
Next we headed farther from home to Bluemont Winery (https://www.bluemontvineyard.com/) as Bradley had seen online they had a field of Christmas lights after sunset. Upon our arrival we found the venue overpacked for our comfort during the pandemic and it was cold enough we weren’t fond of sitting outside without heaters. We picked ourselves up and headed across the street to Henway Hard Cider (https://greatcountryfarms.com/henway-hard-cider/), a new location since I last visited. Upon arrival we witnessed a snowman on an island in their man made pond, as we neared the entry to the building we were able to chat with the chickens they house there. During our visit we enjoyed some cider, sliders and a cookie tray. It was an open building and great to check out for the first time. As the sun began to set we headed back over to Bluemont Vineyard where they had Christmas lights strung throughout the vines. It was stunning as we took the view from the bottom, driving on the curvy road to the top and got to look down on them as they spread over the hillside. Bradley made a great call in recommending we go out to see them. We had so much fun taking photos and videos, laughing at ourselves the entire time. Before heading out of town we stopped at Bluemont General Store (http://www.bluemontstore.com/) in which we were able to pick up some true molasses for our gingerbread cookies to come. We arrived home exhausted after a long day of travel and adventure, and went straight to bed.

Sunday, December 6th
Sunday was a monumental day, as Jenna woke up and cooked me breakfast all before 10. It consisted of Trader Joe’s hash browns, JUST eggs, Kite Hill chive dip and Wegmans Sausage. If any of you want a killer breakfast this is all the ingredients that you need!
Tumblr media
Our next stop of the day was the local farmer’s market, as ya know you’re girl cannot pass up a morning farmers market. We picked up Twin Oats (https://twinoats.com/) oat bites sampler pack. I do have to say my all-time favorite is the White Chocolate Cinnamon Roll, but the Vanilla is good too. Can I say that the owner of this sweet shop is so kind as well. Jenna was a familiar face but without hesitation she welcomed me in sharing all that she had to offer. If you have a local farmers market I encourage you to go, spend your money here, and socialize with others in your community. Let’s connect together as humans!
Tumblr media
We scooped up Bradley from home and headed to Eugene’s Sausage & Fries (https://eatateugenes.com/). I cannot rave enough about how accommodating the staff was with a dairy free, gluten free and egg free diet. Each member of the team was professional and took the allergens seriously. Please understand that a majority of locations we encountered throughout our trip did not take the time to double check their ingredients or consult with the chef to ensure that the allergens were not present within the food. I could write a stellar review about Eugene’s day after day for the great service they provided us during our visit. Our order consisted of Truffle Fries, El Diablo Sausage, Elote Fries, Southern Dog and my pitiful lamb blueberry infused sausage. I would highly recommend ordering the Truffle Fries at every visit with the parmesan on the side and the el diablo sausage. I would pass on the lamb sausage which is no longer listed on the menu, likely for good reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our following location was Aroma Wine Tasting Room (https://moraisvineyards.com/aroma-wine-tasting/) where we obtained flight trees and Jenna was in heaven with the opportunity to fill hers with almost all dessert wines. It was a quaint location with incredible staff, we spent much of the afternoon sipping our wine away. I must add too that the women’s restroom at this location is huge allowing you the opportunity to run in circles, which as expected Jenna could not pass up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cookies & Cream Ice Cream (https://www.cookiesandcreamshop.com/) was a phenomenal follow up location of choice for those of you who eat dairy, I would recommend passing on the sorbet. I ordered the Campfire S’mores ice cream and I can tell you it is worth the drive out to Haymarket! I would order it again and again for the rest of my days if I could.
Tumblr media
Bradley had other adventures to attend to, so Jenna and I went rogue for the rest of the evening. Starting out at Gray Ghost Winery (https://grayghostvineyards.com/) we completed a wine tasting at the counter allowing us the opportunity to hear the history of the grounds and story behind the name. We ended our visit by touring the wine cork gallery that has been set up for the holiday season. Jenna ended up purchasing a bottle of dessert wine and I took a sweet white home for us to share with our mother over the holiday season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Virginia there is this small little building that was placed on earth by God, called the Cheesecake Heaven Drive Thru (https://www.facebook.com/WarrentonCheesecake/) and by God is it good. I had the Original Cheesecake which was outstanding! I promise you, you won’t go wrong by picking out any one of these options. I truly suggest that you pick more than one, if you’re having a hard time deciding just be assured that the Lord only wants what is best for you and that may mean you have to pick out all your favorites.
YOU GUYS! I can not help but crack up each time I think of our experience at Bull Run Winery (https://www.wineryatbullrun.com/). As Jenna and I were walking in from the parking lot I was on the phone with our father. Jenna hops up the smallest curb and next thing I know she is on the ground, pauses a second on her back, rolls managing to get herself up in one swift motion all while picking up the contents that dumped out of her jacket pockets onto the concrete. Jenna starts halling ass up this huge hill to the entrance. I am laughing so hard I can’t speak to inform my concerned father of what occurred while at the same time I am out of breath trying to keep up with her. It is one of my favorite Jenna moments, and to this day I can’t help but laugh when the memory of this event crosses my mind. At the top of the hill as I confronted Jenna on the events that just occurred she acted as if no fall had occurred. Once I calmed my laughter we walked further into the ground of Bull Run to find a tent with heaters to drink under, a wine bar and outdoor live music. Jenna and I each grabbed a glass, found a location near a heater and it was then Jenna admitted to her fall for the first time. Jenna and I chatted and sipped on our wines while we listened to the horrific singing coming from the stage beside us.
We stopped at the Dolce Amore Peruvian Bakery (http://www.dolceamoresweets.com/) before picking up dinner and heading home. We ordered the Tres Leches, Mini Alfajor Box and a Caramel Horn. If you enjoy caramel and shortbread cookies the Mini Alfajor Box is a must have item. The employees were sweet in providing the correct pronunciation of the items after I asked for assistance. I would recommend making a stop here if you’re local.
Tumblr media
Jenna and I picked up Ford’s Fish Shack (https://fordsfishshack.com/locations/ashburn/) to-go before heading home to eat dinner with Bradley. I had requested crab legs before my visit to town so Jenna ensured they were on our order. Bradley and I both enjoyed Connecticut Style Lobster Rolls and fries while Jenna tried out the scallops. I have a sick obsession with their skinny fries at all Ford’s locations, which topped off my entire day. After we filled our stomachs and caught up on our daily adventure, we headed off to bed for another fun-filled day.
Tumblr media
Monday, December 7th
Our morning started off at Petite Loulou Creperie (https://www.lapetiteloulou.com/) in Purcellville, Virginia. Jenna ordered a Sugar Plum Mimosa with her Local Honey and Almond Crepe. Bradley ordered an oat milk latte with his Chicken Cordon Bleu Crêpe. I completed my order with the Prosciutto, Goat Cheese, & Fig Jam Crepe. If you know me any item with prosciutto, goat cheese and/or balsamic glaze is a must order item.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next spot on the way home was a coffee shop called Dolce & Ciabatta (https://dolceciabatta.com/) where I ordered my morning coffee and an eclair that I would come to love for the rest of eternity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jenna and I headed out in the afternoon to SideBar (https://www.sidebarlbg.com/eats) in Leesburg  to test out their happy hours for our first time. We spent hours this afternoon eating, drinking and chatting away. I have to say this is a memory that I will treasure, it was so good to visit with my sister one on one as grown adult women, an opportunity I don’t believe we truly ever had before. Jenna and I enjoyed the General Tso’s Cauliflower, Maple Sriracha Wings, SideBar Fries and Calamari. If you haven’t been to SideBar Happy Hour you’re truly missing out! GO NOW!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After our afternoon dining experience I forced Jenna to take me to all the local TJ Maxx locations. We explored around hitting up Nothing Bundt Cakes (https://www.nothingbundtcakes.com/) before heading home. I ordered the White Chocolate Raspberry, my all time favorite.
Prior to my arrival Bradley had planned several activities for us to enjoy in the evening one of which was building gingerbread houses and activities I had never participated in before. We had such a great time sitting around the coffee table as a family decorating our houses throughout the rest of night. I strove to one up them by adding a stained glass window in my house by using my phone’s flashlight and a half eaten gumdrop. Can you tell I am still impressed with my artistic abilities?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tuesday, December 8th
Again I forced Jenna to rise from her slumber and make me the very requested repeat breakfast from a few days prior. I am telling you, it is good! We headed out shortly thereafter for a wine tasting at Cooper’s Hawk (https://chwinery.com/). I enjoyed this opportunity as I had heard Jenna and Bradley rave about the wine and educational experience since moving out to Virginia.
As we were still full from breakfast we headed out to Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery (https://mtdefiance.com/). We were given the opportunity to order glasses of wine, due to the pandemic flights being unavailable. The cider pours were generous and tasted great. Bradley had a good cracking up session by himself at our table for still an unknown reason. We chatted here for sometime in this beautiful building before heading out. I did purchase a bottle of the Blueberry Cider and Jenna picked up some local mustard and jams they had for sale. We popped in and out of shops in Gainesville before heading to dinner.
Tumblr media
After much debate we enjoyed our dinner at Out of the Blue (https://www.outoftheblue.restaurant/). We enjoyed our shared order of calamari and shrimp. Bradley enjoyed his oysters. I was not a fan of the lobster roll bringing me to the realization I only appreciate a lobster roll if it is Connecticut style. Jenna ate scallops that we subpar for the pricing. We hit up another TJ Maxx on our way back toward home. After a dissatisfied dinner we snug a late night treat in at SideBar ordering some calamari that we shared together in the local parking garage. It was a simple but memorable experience together. I ordered some maple sriracha wings to dive into late at night since I was heading out of town the next day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon our arrival home Bradley got to work on the gingerbread cookies. As a family we spent the rest of the evening around the coffee table decorating and watching Christmas movies.
Tumblr media
Wednesday, December 9th
Once we rolled out of bed in the morning we enjoyed a simple breakfast with coffee at home. Around the noon hour Jenna made me homemade gluten free breaded pickles which were incredible. I ordered Pho-Nomenal (https://www.phonomenalashburn.com/menus) for lunch to arrive at the house. I ordered several types of Summer Rolls which came with an outstanding peanut sauce. We also ordered 4 Sisters Asian Snack Bar (https://www.foursisterssnackbar.com/) boba drinks as a last treat before I packed up my belongings and headed to the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the evening I landed safely back home in Chicago where I was greeted by my parents. Thank you Virginia for another amazing stay. I look forward to spending time outside at the wineries during a summer visit in the future.

Virginia - March 2021
Friday, March 5th
I submitted my final paper for my first graduate school course before heading to bed for a couple hours of sleep. In the morning I would rise for my weekend adventure.
We headed to lunch at IXtapalapa Taqueria (https://www.ixtataqueria.com/), a location Bradley had raved about after their last visit. To drink I enjoyed an authentic lime margarita and a horchata to go. We snacked on chips and guacamole and elote corn before our main food arrived. I ordered two tacos and Bradley had the mole enchiladas, his favorite. After our meal we headed home to Virginia with leftovers in hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we arrived at the house the rush of travel had passed and I was exhausted after a week of late night homework sessions. I took a 40 minute recoup nap while Jenna got around for a day of adventure.
In the early afternoon we went to a local gas station called The Filling Co (https://www.fillingco.com/). where we picked up Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches (https://www.nightingaleicecream.com/).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ordered calamari, deviled eggs, maple sriracha wings, and general tso’s cauliflower. We spent hours enjoying each other's company and snacking away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In true Hanna fashion we ended up at a more than one local TJ Maxx before heading out to a late night dinner at Silver Diner (https://www.silverdiner.com/) which serves my all-time favorite goat cheese bruschetta. We arrived home late into the evening with enough time to visit with Bradley before we all headed off to bed.
Tumblr media
Monday, March 8th
Bradley was alive and working early in the morning while Jenna and I slept in late. After much harassment from the energetic Bradley we got around and headed to Reston Town Center (https://www.restontowncenter.com/) to get our day started. Upon our arrive Jenna ran into Ted’s Bulletin (https://www.tedsbulletin.com/) while I watched over the vehicle in our unpaid parking spot. Jenna came back with several homemade poptarts for me to take back home to Wisconsin. Before leaving we went to pick me up a morning coffee which ended up being hot chocolate and pistachio gelato from Pitango Gelato (https://www.pitangogelato.com/).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found it rewarding to have a vacation away that truly felt it nourished my soul with some time of rest and bits of adventure mixed in. Goodbye Virginia, until we meet again.

Relapses Happen
“Growth isn’t always constant… relapses happen. You’re not back at square one. Your growth prior to your relapse isn’t erased. Take your time. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’ll be okay.”  - Unknown
Over the last several years of my life I have been a passionate self-care advocate. It started my senior year of college during my first counseling session when I was encouraged to read Codependent No More by Melody Beattie. I dove hard into the book finishing it before the next therapy session. It helped me identify with parts of myself that I was unable to put into words and that someone else so eloquently wrote out on the pages I found in my hands. As the years continued I was a dedicated reader to self-help literature, growing my soul with each book that I read. These books allowed me the opportunity to identify with others, reflect within and grow my own being. I became dedicated to the process of personal growth and felt that our souls were here to grow on this journey of life.
When I started counseling in college I was heartbroken and terrified of my own self. I was noted to have depression and codependent behaviors. I listened to videos, read books and articles on these topics to learn more about myself, how to take the appropriate steps into my future and best serve myself in the coming years. I had come up with a foundational practice of self-care. I would enjoy self-help literature, would process my emotions verbally until I formulated a thought and was compelled to write on the days I felt most unstable. I would consciously make the effort to enjoy the small things in life that brought me joy.
I’d be lying if I told you I haven’t struggled with my depression and codependent tendencies in the last 5 years. There have been a fair share of breakdowns and victories. I sit here today, years later on the other side of a severe relapse.
In May, my hours shifted at my full-time job and the opportunity for more time at my secondary job opened up. As someone with no savings living in the times of a world pandemic, I felt it was necessary that I build myself a savings account. Throughout the next several months I was absent from my residence from morning to night. I was working tirelessly at an emotionally demanding position during the day and a physically exhausting position during the night. On the weekends I tried to keep up with housework, family, friends and the mounds of laundry that piled up throughout the week. I failed to realize that my body handling work and earning money was not the way to care for my soul. In those months that I powered through I did not read a single self-help book, I didn’t write out my emotions, I failed to cry at a number of suitable opportunities and the essence of my being started to go numb. I was moving through the motions of life, but I wasn’t living. I was merely surviving.
When I recognized the reality of the existence I was living, I reached out via messaging to my siblings asking if they ever felt this way too. I began to speak openly with my family about the potential to cut back my hours at my second job. I have always voiced my philosophy that, “I work to live, I do not live to work”. I am passionate about my career but I do not feel that my professional work is the solo mission for my life. I truly feel that my soul is here to experience, grow and learn about its own self. My loved ones wish to see me financially stable, and while that concern was appreciated I would become quickly defensive. I would have an internal struggle between the understanding of financial stability and the emotional needs that weren’t being fulfilled. I have the personal understanding that my own anger is always covering up a deeper emotion, typically one of pain and hurt. In my off moments instead of processing these emotions I would numb with social media, non educational videos and sleep. In my professional work I was becoming overwhelmed. I felt that I was working against time while managing the roles of my position, I began to struggle with prioritization. I was struggling to handle my own emotions and becoming reactive in my responses rather than intentional. I was drowning and the only way I knew to stay afloat was to keep moving forward, until the day that attitude stopped working.
It was a simple moment that tipped my boat over, the experience had occurred many times before in which I was irritated but for the most part un-phased. On this particular day, I was feeling overwhelmed, defeated and angry. Do you ever become so upset that you are either going to be outraged or an emotional disaster? Do you recall all the emotional opportunities I had over the last several months to cry in which I refrained? It all ended up coming at once. As I opened up to others about my feelings I heard myself say, “I am most upset with myself as I allowed it to get to this point”. The shame was instant and I was no longer standing on the solid ground I imagined beneath me for the last 7 months of this dual position, money building, self-neglecting existence. Once I was no longer flooded with racing thoughts, my action plan began. I needed therapy, which was unlikely to work in my current schedule. I turned to my next best thing, self-help literature. I started at my roots, with the audio version of Codependent No More by Melody Beattie. As I listened I began to process my emotions of shame, self-doubt, and the questioning of my own existence. Again I completed this book within a few days, this time diving right into the next book, Beyond Codependency by Melody Beattie. I learned about codependent relapse. Again this author took my out of control feelings, thoughts and behaviors placing them on the pages in writing, helping me feel known in a time that I wasn’t sure I could even recognize myself.
The following week I changed my schedule at my second job, I started being intentional in prioritization of my work instead of being reactive. I started taking time to advocate for myself, my emotions and come up with a new self-care plan. My soul has been calling me to write for sometime now, and it feels good to finally be experiencing this release. I wasn’t ready to process until now, and instead of feeling shame or living in the “should have” mentality, I will instead say that I am proud of where I am today. I may have relapsed to a place that I never wished to see again, but I am not the same person I was all those years ago. My relapse is not a failure, it has allowed me the opportunity to refocus my intentions, and lean back onto my philosophy for this existence. I find it is so important on our most challenging days to remind ourselves that mental health is going to ebb and flow as the rest of the universe does. There will be moments of decline. It is the season of regrowth after the downfall in which we can truly find our strength and refocus on the betterment of ourselves, our experiences and the impact we can have on society.

Adventures with Ashley
October 24, 2020
I spent the entire day exploring the Cedarburg and Port Washington areas in Wisconsin with Ashley before winter comes. Ashley is Jenna’s sorority sister and my Lemongrass Spa sister. It is so fun to have a mutual connection in our lives and Ashley most definitely fits right into the sisterhood of the Williamson family. We are so lucky to have her.
Tumblr media
Ashley and I arrived in the mid morning and headed down Washington Ave in Cedarburg to Java House (https://www.javahousecedarburg.com/). Due to the pandemic the interior is closed but they have window ordering available. I ordered the Caramel Waffle Latte which I would highly recommend. Ashley ordered the Creme Brulee Latte. We sat outside catching up on the last few months and watching the morning traffic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed across the street to Ashley’s Confectionery (https://chocolatesbyashley.com/) to peek inside. On our way to breakfast we stopped at several shops along the way that had opened up early taking a look at the lawn ornaments and popping inside a few of the shops. One of which was The Shinery (https://theshinerymoonshine.com/), where we enjoyed a quick shot of moonshine to warm our insides for a long day ahead in the cool fall air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cedar Creek Settlement (https://www.cedarcreeksettlement.com/index.html) has many shops, a restaurant and winery inside. The beauty of Cedarburg is all the old buildings. I admire that the community respects these historic buildings and continues to utilize them today. We ate our brunch at Cream & Crepe Cafe (https://www.creamandcrepecafe.com/). I ordered the double crepe, Combination Star and Country Crossroads. I enjoyed the two but favored the Combination Star. Ashley ordered the Fruit Basket and Dusty Miller.
Tumblr media
After touring several shops throughout Cedar Creek Settlement (https://www.cedarcreeksettlement.com/index.html) we headed back outside into the local area. Oil Sprig (https://theolivesprig.com/) is a must spot when in the area. Ashley picked up two of my favorites, the Tuscan Herb Olive Oil and 18 Year Aged Traditional Balsamic Vinegar. I highly recommend mixing these two together with some cracked pepper and dipping in some bread. It is truly amazing!
Cedarburg Popcorn Company (https://www.sagepopcorn.com/) is a hidden gem for any popcorn lover, it’s down a drive between two buildings. A small building with so many fun options inside. I selected the Cinnamon Roll and Puppy Chow popcorns.
Tumblr media
Off we went exploring more of Washington Ave before my next stop shop, Amy’s Apples (https://www.amysgourmetapples.com/) where I scooped up my ultimate favorite, the Double Dunked; a green caramel apple with dark chocolate, milk chocolate and a white chocolate drizzle. I also then forced Ashley to take a photo at the memorable Cedarburg arch that is a must take photo stop every visit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interurban Bridge (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g59768-d3547924-Reviews-Ozaukee_Interurban_Trail-Cedarburg_Wisconsin.html)  gives you a beautiful view of Cedar Creek. I encourage everyone in the area to take a step onto this bridge, snap some photos and enjoy the view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After hours of walking Washington Ave popping in and out of shops, we worked up an appetite and stopped into Maxwell’s Bar & Grill (https://www.maxwellscedarburg.com/). Maxwell’s was a must stop during my college years for a late night beer and wings. Together we split some boneless BBQ and Parmesan Garlic chicken wings. We each picked out a good cold beer of choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We decided to head out of downtown Cedarburg for some other local fall activities. Our first stop was Witte’s Vegetable Farm LLC (https://www.wittesvegfarm.com/new-page) in local Cedarburg, WI. A small vegetable farm stand with outstanding prices, family history hanging on the walls and a farm site worth seeing during the summer season. I plan to head back next summer to see them in their prime. We picked up some small pumpkins and gourds for the end of the season fall decor before heading out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arriving at Creekside Valley Pumpkin Farm (http://www.creeksidevalleyfarmwi.com/) it was visibly a busy location this fall season as the pumpkin patch was well picked over. It was apparent who was a local as they came prepared with their mud boots to enjoy what was left of the pumpkin patch, tour the corn maze and play on the playground. We took it easy walking around the barns, seeing the unique pumpkins that were still for sale and I picked up the best apple cider I have had in a long time from Gierach Orchards (https://gierachorchards.com/) that they had for sale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barthel Fruit Farm (http://www.barthelfruitfarm.com/) was the final stop on our fall exploring adventure. It was a busy season for these local orchards and farms who had the pumpkin batch already plowed and all the apples had been picked clean from the trees. We headed out to the food truck to pick up the fall favorites of Apple Cider Donuts, Apple Cinnamon Scone and Pumpkin Cookies. We bundled up in the car as we enjoyed our goodies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed back to downtown Cedarburg to stop in for a flight at Cedar Creek Winery (https://cedarcreekwinery.com/) before closing time. Our tasting consisted of the Syrah, Christmas Blush, Gewurztraminer, Cranberry Blush and Port Rose. I was surprised to find that I truly enjoyed the Christmas Blush. We each purchased a few bottles before setting out for Port Washington, WI.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During my years in college I had so many friends tell me about walking out to the Port Washington Breakwater Lighthouse (https://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=248). I was excited for Ashley and I to head out onto this adventure. It took us a while but we found the entrance of the walkway down by the marina and started our long walk out. After walking nearly to the end we were stopped by a construction gate cutting us short on our pursuit. I am hoping that this walkway is restored and one day we will be able to walk out to the lighthouse. Instead we soaked up the perfect lighting and views of golden hour before walking ourselves back to the car.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our final destination was dinner, we ended up at The Pasta Shoppe (http://www.portpastashoppe.com/). We shared the calamari and each ended up with a ravioli dish. Ashley ordered the Braised Beef Ravioli and I selected the Shrimp & Roasted Garlic Ravioli.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had one packed day making new memories in Ozaukee County. It is so fun to catch up with friends that we consider family. Can’t wait for many more adventures to come.

Falling in Love with Adventure
Tumblr media
Saturday Oct 10, 2020
I arrived at Tiffany's apartment in the early afternoon, after a tour of the apartment we headed out to lunch at Cafe Zupas in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. I ordered the combo Pesto Chicken Sandwich with Clam Chowder Soup which is served with a baguette roll and chocolate covered strawberry. We enjoyed the fall weather outside on the patio, with a bit of a heavy breeze. https://cafezupas.com/
Tumblr media
As past college roommates we did our typical round of shopping at TJ Maxx, Ross, Home Goods and Costco all local to the Cafe Zupas restaurant.
We headed into some local fall activities. We started out at Cedar Creek Farm in Cedarburg Wisconsin. It was a bit more packed during the COVID-19 pandemic than we preferred so we headed straight to the back of the grounds to explore some pumpkins before heading back out onto the next adventure. http://www.cedarburgcreekfarm.com/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appleland Farm Market in Fredonia, WI was the fall lovers dream. We took some shots with the pumpkins before heading out into the apple orchard. We were able to purchase a bag to fill with apples and had the opportunity to explore the large orchard. It was so fun to go into the depths of the orchard while enjoying the fall weather. After gathering our apples we headed into the corn maze where we inevitably got lost with the hope to find ourselves at the entrance or exit, we ended up finding ourselves outside of the exit, making it a complete success. Of course we popped into the shop to find some homemade goodies and household decor. I would say if you are in the local area during the fall, Appleland Farm Market is a MUST stop location. https://www.applelandorchard.com/
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In true Hanna fashion, I was persistent we needed to find a bubble tea location when I discovered online Le’s Pho in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. I ordered a Taro smoothie with boba, which was a bit too earthy for my taste. Tiffany ordered the Tango Mango smoothie with lychee jelly and enjoyed it. https://lespho.com/

We headed out to dinner at Stilt House in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. When we arrived there was a 30 minute wait, and in the hopes to stay warm by moving we headed down the street to Amy’s Apple another MUST stop location when in the area. https://www.amysgourmetapples.com/
Tumblr media
We scooped up our favorite caramel covered apples and headed back to the restaurant. Dinner was a great opportunity to catch up on work, family and life itself. We shared the Spinach Dip Wontons, I ordered the General Tso’s Chicken Sandwich and Tiffany ordered the Shaved Beef Sliders both with a side of Truffle Parmesan Fries. https://www.stilthousegastrobar.com/
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During our dinner we realized that the two of us are no longer in our college days and truly are aging into boring adults both with our hearts set on heading home, hopping into comfy clothing and settling in for the night. We were in the apartment by 9pm in our sweats, wine in hand and a documentary on Netflix. We ended the night before midnight, all experiences we only shared after college graduation.

Sunday, Oct 11, 2o2o
In a chance to reminisce about our college days together we headed to our favorite breakfast spot of PJ Pipers in Cedarburg. Tiffany ordered a Skillet with Crepes, and I had the Cowboy Cakes. http://www.pjpiperwi.com/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed down the street to the Cedarburg Coffee Roastery. It was the perfect weather for a hot coffee to keep us both warm. http://www.cedarburgcoffee.com/
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we walked past our favorite shops awaiting their opening for the day we ended up down the street at the Oil Sprig https://theolivesprig.com/ and Cedar Creek Winery https://cedarcreekwinery.com/. Since the pandemic has kept festivals shut down, I was able to score a few bottles of Strawberry Blush which typically sells out each year at Strawberry Fest in Cedarburg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After touring some more local shops we dropped off my goodies in the car and headed to Cedar Creek Park to snap some photos of the fall colors. https://treasuresofoz.org/treasures/item/22-parks/17-cedar-creek-park

It is wild to see how we change from our years of college into adulthood. As I reflect on our college years I wish we would have explored the area more, going to local establishments and parks. Thankful for the opportunity the two of us have to explore the area still as adults. It is so fun to have nostalgic moments and create new adventures together.
Next we set ourselves out to locate some beautiful fall colors in local areas as we kept seeing them from the roadside. Cedarburg Covered Bridge didn’t have a lot of colors on the grounds but we did get to capture some pictures of history.  https://www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/2241/Covered-Bridge-Park

Our adventure moved us to the back of an apartment complex after we saw the colorful trees from the highway. We pulled in and walked behind the construction area to a quiet wooded area nestled in the back.

As our day was coming to an end I was insistent I was stopping at Trader Joe’s before leaving the area. On our way to Bayshore, Tiffany brought up the potential for us to stop at Milwaukee’s Original Oktoberfest in Glendale, Wisconsin. I searched online to find out the Sunday special was free admission and half off liter bier. We are two girls who can’t turn down good beer, so we headed that way. It was a nice fall day to sit outside, drinking beer and listening to live music. https://www.thebavarianbierhaus.com/oktoberfest-info
Tumblr media
Once we finished we headed to Total Wine and Trader Joe’s where I picked up all the staples that I had longed for. In true CUW alumni fashion we ended up having dinner at the Highland House with the monumental chips, dip and margaritas. We shared the Chinese Tootsie Rolls, Tiffany ordered Shrimp Tacos, and I tried the Crispy Taquitos which were outstanding and I have been craving since. https://highlandhouse.com/

In case you don’t know, Tiffany and I met our freshman year of college, lived together our junior year and will continue to be lifelong friends. I reminisce on our past years of friendship and look forward to the many more to come. Over the last few years we have visited each other in each location of our lives, but it was so fun to be back in our old territory together experiencing the new and cherishing the old. I am so thankful for friends like Tiffany, where we can go a few months without talking, get together and all things fall right back into place. When you find these people in your life, hold on tight and don’t let go.

Girls Weekend - Rock County
I have 3,000 photos in my phone with no personal record attached besides the memories I hold associated with each. I fear that one day I won’t remember the stories to tell my family, and I will have broken pieces of the times I have spent with friends. I have decided to start keeping a personal written record of times spent and captured moments right here on this page. I thought there was no better way than to start it out with a little bit of wine, a whole lot of laughter and a good good friend.
Tiffany became my first college friend during our first week of freshman orientation. Our friendship only grew from there. We supported one another through major life changes, lived together our junior year, watched one another graduate, congratulated each other with every new job and visited each other in each location we have lived since our friendship began. I am thankful to have a lasting friendship with a friend who is so true.
It has been 9 months since we last saw one another in person, so we filled weekends worth of food, drinks and laughter all into one that I want to share here with you. Tiffany arrived on Saturday afternoon, it was beautiful weather to spend some time outside with a little bit of sunshine and just enough heat to keep you comfortable. We headed over to The Looking Glass (https://www.stayglassyjanesville.com/) for a bite to eat out on the patio. It is a small bar located on Main Street in Janesville. We enjoyed cold glasses of CiderBoys Peach County Hard Cider as we caught up on work, relationships and living. I ate the Pesto Chicken Wrap, while she had the Veggie Grilled Cheese. It was a perfect location to have privacy to catch up, while still being able to enjoy the outdoors in a social environment.
Tumblr media
In true friendship fashion, we headed out to some local wineries. We took a scenic tour out to Fermenting Cellars Winery (http://www.fermentingcellarswinery.com/), a small family run winery with a variety of sweet wines. We did a sampling before heading over to a tried and true, Northleaf Winery (https://northleafwinery.com/) in the town of Milton. It is our tradition to opt for the two tastings each resulting in eight samples of the wine offerings. As we go through the glasses we rank each wine on a scale of 1-10. I am dedicated to self-torture every time by ordering the Bright Spirits Cranberry, which is incredible but the most tart beverage you will ever taste. It truly does bring joy to my life, and I love sharing this one with friends who come to visit. We had the best time touring wineries, laughing over the commentary of our tastings, and catching up on all the life we had missed while being apart that we were worn out and ready to head home.
Tumblr media
We arrived home tuckered out and a bit dehydrated. After a couple of hours pumping our systems of water and resting we spent the evening in the kitchen. Tiffany doesn’t find as much joy as I do cooking in the kitchen but she didn’t hesitate to jump right in. It was a first for both of us cooking with a cast iron skillet and making steak. Our evening ended with a delicious meal and some shows before bed.
Tumblr media
Sunday morning we woke up and headed out for breakfast at Bessie’s Diner (https://www.bessiesdiner.com/) located at the Janesville Airport. We celebrated the morning with flavored mimosas, pineapple mango and blood orange. I am dedicated to ordering the Monte Cristo each time I visit, while Tiffany took a leap and ordered the Sweet and Spicy Hash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spontaneously decided to head out to Skelly’s Farm Market (https://www.skellysfarmmarket.com/) to tour the sunflower fields. Together we decided to tour the field and each take home a bouquet of 6 sunflowers, with the experience costing us each $15. It should be noted that the sunflower field is adequately sized and a map is provided, but needless to say we both still had the ability to get ourselves lost as we continued to snap away taking photo memories. After much time spent locating our sunflower for our bouquet we headed into the building to claim our donuts right as the rain started.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we departed I was determined to obtain a hydrating beverage which took us to the Flying Pig (https://www.flyingpigtreatshop.com/) in downtown Beloit. It is a menu worth viewing before you arrive as the extensive options can be quite overwhelming. The Flying Pig menu consists of ice cream, shaved ice, smoothies, shakes, bubble tea, popcorn and the location has an entire candy sprinkle wall. Tiffany and I were delightfully surprised with our selections of iced coffee boba drinks that we enjoyed resting at home. I was so excited for my boba that I didn’t even take a picture til we were on the road again.
Tumblr media
In the late afternoon we decided to explore one more location heading to Rock County Brewing (https://www.rockcountybrewingco.com/) in the heart of downtown Janesville. Tiffany enjoyed an Amber Ale, and I stuck to my bohemian roots with the Bohemian Dunkel. I was delightfully surprised with my selection and will most certainly come back to order it in the future. It was great to sit outside after a fun filled weekend to catch up on what’s ahead in our careers and lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I most certainly look forward to adding memories to our years of friendship, with hopes that our next visit isn’t another several months down the road. Let’s not forget to make time for the friendships that we value in our lives.

Goodbye Pierre, Hello...
I met Pierre in November 2010 in Janesville, WI. It was a purchase of a 1999 Nissan Altima with 74,000 miles on it for $5,000. Pierre was intended to be my first vehicle, basic and sufficient until I became an experienced driver and had the funds to purchase an upgrade. Together we traveled over 111,000 miles across this country. We traveled through Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. Pierre was the first place that I could call my own. A safe place in which I could wholeheartedly be myself in every second of every day we were together.
As I grew through high school and wore him down, he continued to stay loyal. During my years of rebellion he held all my secrets. When I fell in love and ended up in heartbreak he witnessed the joys, the laughs and tears. Oh the amount of tears he absorbed over the years on our long drives together, allowing me time to process and work things out on my own. When I was injured he helped me get home. Together we celebrated so many firsts and lasts including high school graduation, starting college, ending college, my first career job interview, first day of work and last day of work at my first job, moving into my first apartment. We shared sunrises, sunsets, rainstorms and snow falls. Oh the many monarch we had fly up the windshield over the years. I grew up behind that steering wheel when we were together.
Pierre held up after the countless curb checks (one median check), break slams, one bumper accident, and the countless scratches, dents and a good amount of rust obtained around his frame. I appreciate that he never left me stranded, and the one time we called it close I was warned with loss of power steering on the Milwaukee interstate. You see, the two of us were in tune and that’s what comes along with nine years of friendship. At times he got on my nerves with his quirks. When I accelerated speed on the on ramp to the interstate I would have to turn off the A/C. In town in the winter the defrost wouldn’t work on the windshield. The gear shift would need pressed back every so often and ever so slightly to stay in drive. Pierre had no key fob which resulted in a game of hide in seek through the college parking structure on many occasions. When I entered adulthood we played the same game in parking lots. After a year or so the key no longer worked on the trunk lock. If I couldn’t unlock the drivers door the passengers door was a safe bet. I bent a whole lot of keys over the years. With all of those quirks out in the open, you may understand the amount of shit Pierre witnessed me talking about him with my intended plans to replace him in the future.
It wasn’t until our last few weeks together when I realized our time was running out that I began to understand the heart that comes with an old car and its owner. Together we made a good team. After several years of his life we met, and he was my stability through some of the most influential years of my life. I am so thankful for the friends and family who loved this old car just as much as I did. On our last few days together I became tearful realizing the transformation that life has brought me in the last nine years behind that wheel. Pierre was there to silently witness it all. We said our final goodbye after nine years of friendship in November of 2019, and you bet I gave him the biggest hug.
With all of that being sad, it was a bittersweet day when I started a friendship with my new friend. Heartbroken as I stepped away from a long transformational chapter of my life, and welcomed myself one more step into adulthood. Each day I remind myself how truly grateful I am to call Ember a 2017 Ford Escape my very own.

VA Fam 2019 - Gelato Pops & Flights Home
Williamson Family Vacation 2019 -- Part 5 of 5
Day 7 - Tuesday, August 27
After going hard all week being out and about, we chose to take today a little easier and stay local. We started the morning relaxing around home before heading out in the afternoon for happy hour at Parallel Winery & Whiskey Bar in Broadlands, VA. A $3 glass of Merlot and some appetizers later, I was satisfied as was the rest of the team. (http://parallelwinebistro.com/)
Tumblr media
In the later afternoon we stopped by Fantasticks a pop-up gelato bar and pops shop. We were able to select hour flavor of gelato bar, flavored coating, three toppings and a drizzle flavor on top. Jenna went deep into her chocoholic dreams with her creation, Mom indulge in the sweet side of life and I went with a more refreshing setting. I created an orange creamsicle, strawberry coated, topped with graham cracker, white chocolate pearls and dried raspberries, drizzled with white chocolate. Oh it was so good, and such a unique experience. (http://fantasticksgelato.com/wordpress1/)
Tumblr media
We made a quick pit stop at The Craft of Brewing for two games of shuffleboard before heading to the house for a cookout. Bradley arrived home in time for some wine bottles to be opened and the grill master to start grilling. Dad made some incredible shrimp and pork kabobs followed by chicken and corn on the cob. A true cookout leaving leftover for the weeks lunches ahead. As everyone got around for bed I took sometime dipping in Jenna's luxury bathroom tub with a Lush bath bomb and a glass of wine. It felt good to take some time to relax after a bit of a chaotic week running about.

Day 8 - Wednesday, August 28
Shortly after I woke up the doorbell rang, unclear of who it may be I waited it out. Several minutes passed before I creeped down the stairs and opened the front door. To my surprise it was two boxes of B Doughnuts, one almost completely filled with my favorite chive bagels. I ran back upstairs to wake Jenna and thank her for the gift. As expected Jenna not being a morning person I had a still sleeping slightly agitated sister before resorting back downstairs. (https://www.bdoughnut.com/)
Tumblr media
We spent our last morning lounging and packing before heading to the local Ford's Crab Shack for our last meal. Some shrimp, scallops, clam chowder, lobster grilled cheese, chicken tenders and jambalaya later we were stuffed. (https://fordsfishshack.com/)
Tumblr media
At the end of the meal Jenna reminded me of my desired stop at 4 Sisters Asian Snack Bar. Upon entry we were greeted by the sweetest employee who made you feel welcome, explained to me some history of bubble tea and allowed me to take a taste before my purchase. I walked out as a happy camper with my Vietnamese Coffee Bubble Tea in hand, and places that I will most certainly return to a few times on my next trip out East. (https://www.foursisterssnackbar.com/)
Tumblr media
We headed back home for final packing before making our way to the DCA airport for a trip back home. TSA check and flight later, we landed back in MKE exhausted and ready for a nights rest before returning to work the next day. Oh wouldn't it be nice to be on vacation forever.

VA Fam 2019 - Harpers Ferry
Williamson Family Vacation 2019 -- Part 4 of 5
Day 6 - Monday, August 26
Off to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia we went for a whole lot of history, some nature and adventures in store. We arrived to find one of the last parking spots at the train station. As we crossed the road we headed up 70 steps to the road above. After that workout we stopped in a few shops before sitting outside at Rabbit's Hole for a tiny meal before many more steps of the day. We wandered along stepping back in time of old candy shops and some modern day tourist traps. We continued on down the hill, to climb another as we headed to where the rivers meet. It was a great balance of nature and history for all members of our family. We took some time to relax down by the Shenandoah River. It was so refreshing to wade in the water watching others kayaking and rafting, while we relaxed in the sun. It was the perfect weather for a day outdoors. (https://www.nps.gov/hafe/index.htm)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we tuckered ourselves out we headed out to Harpers Ferry Brewing. Oh what a sight to see, a high up view of the beautiful nature below. We each sipped on a beer, some playing Connect 4 and others soaking in the surroundings. It was a special moment to watch a bald eagle soaring over the river, highway and treetops. (https://harpersferrybrewing.com/)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed out to some other "local" stops that stole Jenna's heart a few trips ago and were quick to catch ours. Mountaineer Popcorn in Shepherstown, West Virginia had a variety of popcorn options. The two young girls working that day were so welcoming sharing with us their favorite options and allowing us to test others out. We ended up with several flavors including: buffalo cheddar, salt & vinegar, caramel cashew, zebra, and dill (all treats for later). (https://mountaineer-popcorn-company.business.site/)
Tumblr media
Our last stop on the way home was at Nutter's Ice Cream in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Our ice cream selections included pistachio almond, buttered pecan, cappuccino and blueberry yogurt. A kiddie size here is more than enough and our total for four of us only came to $7. It was a steel of a deal and oh so yummy. It was nice sitting outside after a long day of adventure on an old wooden bench facing the road. (https://www.facebook.com/nuttersicecream/)
Tumblr media
Once again we were off for a journey home with our final stop of the day at Clare and Don's in Falls Church, Virginia. If you're a natural seafood lover here is a hot stop for you. It provided a relaxing beach atmosphere with some great seafood options available. (https://clareanddons.com/)
