World Malaria Day Blog Post: Bad Décor and Bed Bugs!
I’d be avoid bed nets too if I believed these myths to be true. This month I’ve been busier than a mosquito, buzzzin all around my trading center conducting malaria awareness activities with my strongest community leaders. Have we made a difference? Only time can tell, but if we don’t try, then that’s the real shame. I’ve learned some new things about Malaria and how the community perception has changed from when I first arrived to site almost a year ago. They used to complain about the heat and inconvenience of never having nets…but now the most recent complains that I feel have more legitimate excuses for not using bed nets. Complaints I hear now are: bed nets are just plain bad décor and sometimes people are just too annoyed to hang them up day after day but can’t bear to leave them hanging disrupting the furnishings in the house. It is true some Malawians are very concerned with the way their house looks (thus all the daily sweeping and mopping, full sets of matching couch liners and window curtains, etc.) This is a legitimate concern and if some more though can be put into making mosquito nets more fashionable to change the way people view the hanging ball of mesh above the bed, then maybe the net would be more proudly used daily can prevent illness and death! Another legitimate complain I’ve herd recently is that people are afraid of bed net being distributed by government through health centers because in the past some people’s homes had been infected by bed bugs! Yikes, this is a hard one to explain…but this is what I’m telling people now: bed bugs spreads easily yes that’s true, but it doesn’t mean that all bed nets that come from mass bed net distribution are infected with bed bugs. The only thing they can really do is to carefully check the nets before bringing them into their home…not much else other than hope and pray that the batch of nets they received were not infected. More investigation would need to be made to confirm locations where this occurred, so it can be properly contained and avoided. Bed nets come originally sealed but health care workers are encouraged to remove this packaging before distribution to reduce the person ability to just sell the net instead of using it properly in their homes. We want to help improve people’s health environments not add to them, so these steps need to be followed in order to ensure happy net users. These are just some of the challenges health developers face when promoting bed net use, everyone else in the world who doesn’t need to sleep under a mosquito net would never understand these challenges and might say I’d just sleep under the net, how hard could it be? But it’s hard, nothing is ever as easy as it sounds, that’s why I’m thankful to be here on the ground, with real people trying to find real ways to address these challenges. Without experience, how can we understand? Without failure, how can we improve? World Malaria day, not the only day we need to recognize these challenges, but one more day to help share this message to the rest of the world. Goodnight, sleeps tight…don’t let….anything bite! SLEEP under a mosquito net if you can! Please! -- Sent from my iPhone ~Teresa H. Peace Corps Volunteer 2015-2017 Nathenje, Lilongwe

How to Create a Positive Impression
It’s normal to feel anxious in a new situation … in a new job, at a party, or a social event. We know that first impressions matter … And so much hangs in the balance … And we want to seem like someone who is warm and friendly … And not like someone who is stupid, or some weirdo to avoid. Understanding body language is fundamental here … And the tips below can help you make the right impression.
1. Project an impression of openness: The number one key to appearing warm and friendly is projecting an aura of openness. This is usually achieved by using open body language - which basically involves the following:
· Don’t cross your arms; allow them to hang naturally at your sides.
· Similarly, if you’re sitting down, keep your legs stretched out and uncrossed.
· Lean forward to show an interest in the other person.
· Stand up straight; don’t slouch.
· Smile (that helps to put both you and the other person at ease).
2. Pay attention to eye contact: Making good eye contact is essential as well. It indicates you’re happy to be talking to that person, are comfortable and confident, with nothing much to hide. However, if someone won’t meet our eye, it makes them seem a bit more shady (or it can simply send the message that you lack confidence.) Also, try to be natural and don’t stare at the person, as they’ll feel uncomfortable and want to escape.
3. Adjust your signals to the other person’s signals: An astute individual is also aware of, and can read the body language, of other people too. For example, if their non-verbal language seems quite closed and defensive, you may need to back off and give the person space.
4. Engage in Conversation: To create a great impression, you really want the other person to pick up the message that you think they’re wonderful! The best way to do that is to ask them open questions – so you find out all about them, and the things that interest them. For example, what kinds of things are they passionate about? What are their hopes and their dreams for the future? Then respond to their answers with other open questions - to build a fuller picture of what that person’s like.
