Embroidery! One of my many hobbies!! I think I see (what I would call) stem stitch, French knots, chain stitch and couching in the close-up. Anybody have sources about embroidery styles, stitches etc in East Asia?

okay I know I have unfinished fics to write, but do you all know the ballad of Tam Lin? what if wwx was Tam Lin and lwj was his lover holding him fast through transformation after transformation until he was safe?

He'd get a nice 5x7 print and add it to the rotating series of motivational quotes that go in the minimalist frame on the table in his foyer
okay but how does the canonical Lan sartorial elegance fit with the fact that Lan Xichen would have a sincere smile at the t-shirt I saw today that just said “Leave It All Behind - Move Forward” in a weirdly spare font

On ao3, user @soshyy has just written and published a masterpiece! Cant believe I’m forgetting the name, but it’s 16 chapters, modern au with cultivation. Lan zhan has left the lan sect to dedicate himself to uncovering the ancient lan musical cultivation techniques, which have been lost to time. In his work, he meets the equivalent of a cultivation “street sweeper”, who happens to live in his building and have a young son, but who also happens to have a strangely high cultivation level for a poorly paid municipal cultivator. Beyond that little mystery, there’s an excellent underlying problem that leads to a big revelation.
More perks: Renowned sect leader and the darling of the cultivation world lan xichen overuses emojis! It’s a kidfic! And wow, it is so well written. What more could you want? I have honestly been looking for a fic like this since I joined the fandom over a year ago.
Cannot recommend enough, 💖/10  [I love this rating system!]

“I’m not here to help you with your work,” said Lan Zhan, injecting frost into his voice to deter any further attempts at charm. “I’ll be focusing on my research.”
Wei Ying cocked his head. “Research?” he said.
“Mm. I’m a cultivation researcher, not a department employee. I’m reconstructing the ancient musical cultivation techniques of the Lan clan.”
___
Lan Zhan’s new liaison at the Caiyi Municipal Cultivation Department is an enigma – ridiculously talented, yet somehow content with mopping up spiritual pests for barely above minimum wage. Wei Ying is slapdash and irresponsible, and Lan Zhan doesn’t like him at all… but then he meets A-Yuan, who loves music and longs for a piano his father can’t afford.
Forced into cautious friendship by a four-year-old’s music lessons, Lan Zhan soon realises Wei Ying is more than he seems. The single father is a man of many secrets – including, perhaps, the key to Lan Zhan’s life’s work. And in the meantime, the background resentment in Caiyi Town is rising to dangerous levels…

Just reread my own fic and (wonder of wonders) I still like it! It's all atmosphere and wwx introspecting, and I'm really pleased with how it came out!
3k, T, Sunshot Era, Canon-typical Violence (thoughts and memories, not on-screen), LWJ pining in the background, LWJ and his magical ability to take care of WWX without being Too Much(TM)

oh no I just wrote the saddest modern wei ying snippet and it's going to get even sadder when I add lan zhan's part
Driving home in the fading dark of the early morning always brings on a feeling of melancholy, no matter that it’s at the end of a good shift of solid work with a paycheck waiting at the end of the week. There’s something about the empty streets, still littered with the scraps and detritus of the past day, waiting for the street sweepers and the trash collectors to come through and make it habitable again. Something about how the loneliness is broken only by the occasional pedestrian or passing car who look as lost and out of place as he feels. Something about how unwitnessed this hour is, how few of the city’s residents have ever seen it like this and how few ever will. They only know the city when it’s clean and smiling in the light of day or dressed up and glittering in the evenings. They’ve never seen it washed out in the gray light, empty and alone. He’s not sure most of them would recognize it if they did. Something about that resonates.

current wip is still that post-canon casefic. life's busy and I'm a little stuck, but here's a taste!
[the scene: wwx catches lsz and ljy plotting something]
“Who are we discussing?” Wei Wuxian asked from just behind Jingyi’s shoulder. Jingyi yelped and spun around, stammering an answer. Sizhui just grinned.
“Ah, Senior Wei! Um, well…”
“Jin Ling, perhaps? What are you cooking up? Can I come?”
The two exchanged a look.
“Ah, we were wondering whether Sect Leader Jin might wish to join us for a short night hunt, since we’ve just heard from Hanguang-jun that negotiations here are likely to continue another several days.” Sizhui looked cautiously at Wei Wuxian.
“Several days?” Even Wei Wuxian could hear that he was whining. “The heavens hate me. What have I ever done to earn their censure? No, don’t answer that, it was rhetorical. Yes, let’s go on a night hunt. I don’t care if you don’t want me along, I’m coming so that I don’t go crazy and murder someone.” He pretended not to notice the alarmed widening of Jingyi’s eyes. He wouldn’t really. Probably. “Did you have a lead to follow? How soon can you rope Jin Ling into coming along? Where are we going?”
[one day it'll be finished. until then, I've got a couple of short one-shots up on ao3 if you're interested]

Student from China brought me a gorgeous lotus tassel, and I had to do a double-take to be sure it wasn't actual cql merch and then a double-think to be sure I hadn't accidentally outed my cql obsession to my students somehow

I swear cql put all of lwj's biggest most visible emotions in the opening sequence, and that seems really unfair to his astonishing library of microexpressions

Jingyi heard Senior Wei calling from the treeline behind them. “Juniors, to me!”
“But we’ve almost got it! Senior Wei, you said you’d let us handle this one on our own!” He was probably whining. But, really, it wasn’t even that hard! There were a lot of walking corpses, sure, but they weren’t even fierce corpses, and (for all Senior Wei’s tips and ribbing) they were doing a good job.
“Now!” Senior Wei’s voice sliced across the battlefield like a thrown sword. That was unusual. Not that he couldn’t be loud, but there was something about his tone. Jingyi snuck a glance back and blanched at the expression on Senior Wei’s face. He was serious. Like serious-serious. More serious than they’d ever seen him. They started retreating.
