An age verification bill known as KKOSMA is getting marked up by the US Senate Committee on THURSDAY, MAY 16TH.

This bill would introduce age verification through digital ID for EVERYONE. Not just people under a certain age. It BANS social media for kids under the age of 13, requires parental consent for anyone under 18.

I'm working on getting more information, but for now here is the link to the website with the committee members. Highly recommend calling in/faxing and telling them to vote NO.

Just heard they are trying to add KOSA to the must pass FAA bill.

Both KOSA and the Earn It Act bill are dangerous for the future of the Internet.

In a nutshell, KOSA would allow states to sue any websites that host content deemed “harmful” to minors. With such a vague wording, its expected that any NSFW stuff, educational ressources or LGBT content, will immediately be taken down if govts dont approve of it.

Plus, it will be made mandatory to use IDs to confirm your age when going online, to so called “protect kids” but all that will cause is a huge potential data breach and endanger more kids.

As for the Earn It Act bill, it would allow the governement to spy and filter out anything they dont like in private dms for any users,as well as blowing a hole into Section 230 : The thing that prevent websites from being directly liable in case a user post something illegal,instead of the user being punished directly. Note for people calling their House Reps.

If you're Representative is a Republican, chances are-

THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT LGBTQ+ ISSUES.

Even mentioning how BIPOC people or people with disabilities/mental health issues (and many more marginalized groups) are at risk is a gamble. They won't be swayed by the fact that this bill will harm these communities, in fact, that could spur them into voting YES on KOSA.

You have to cater to your representative's views. Say something about freedom of speech, or how this bill could be misused by the left to force their agenda into online spaces, etc.

KOSA has unfortunately been introduced to the house of representatives. However, we have not heard if it has passed senate yet.

I can find no info on if there will be a vote on KOSA tomorrow. There nothing on the senate schedule about it for this week. Do you have more info?

OKAY, so I was just about to edit yesterday's post about this-

KOSA won't be voted on tomorrow.

Somebody in the server found a tweet saying that Senator Schumer made it clear that KOSA is on the top list of priorities for this Congress, and it caused such an uproar that nobody bothered to fact-check it. We don't doubt in the slightest that the people trying to pass this bill would one-HUNDRED percent pull something like trying to push KOSA through while everyone is distracted with a big event.

It was only a few hours ago (I wasn't online at the time) that someone else in the server realized that this is untrue, and that level of misinformation is one of the biggest factors working against us to get rid of KOSA in the first place, and I apologize.

However, the Senate IS going back into session on Monday, so calling in about KOSA won't be for nothing.

By all means, call your reps tomorrow and tell them to vote NO on KOSA, we need every single bit of pushback we can get.
