The “Sick” Chainsmokers Kembali Dengan The Sick Boy

The Chainsmokers membuktikan bahwa mereka bukan duo DJ biasa. Dengan single barunya “Sick Boy” yang rilis akhir Januari yang lalu, mereka menunjukkan kalu mereka memang pantas disebut sebagai the sick boys. The Chainsmokers adalah kelompok DJ asal New York yang beranggotakan Alex Pall dan Andrew Taggart. Dalam beberapa lagu mereka sebelumnya, Andrew Taggart yang akrab disapa Drew ini berperan tidak hanya sebagi peracik music, namun juga sebagi pengisi vocal dalam beberapa lagu termasuk Closer.  Lagu tersebut adalah salah satu track di album kedua mereka, Collage  yang menjadi mega hits dan melambungkan nama The Chainsmokers. Banyak orang yang mengkritik kemampuan bernyanyi Drew, terutama saat mereka tampil live yang dinilai pas-pasan atau bahkan di bawah rata-rata. Tapi beberapa juga memuji karena untuk ukuran seorang DJ yang bukan penyanyi, ia cukup berani untuk tampil menyanyikan lagu tersebut.  

Namun alih – alih menyerah dengan hujatan netizen dan kritikus musik, The Chainsmokers tetap mengembangkan jenis musik yang sama dengan Drew yang mengisi porsi vokal tidak hanya di satu lagu, namun di beberapa lagu di album ketiga nya, Memories…Do Not Open yang rilis tahun 2017 dan yang paling baru, pada single “The Sick Boy”. Pada lagu ini Drew Taggart yang kembali nekat bernyanyi dalam lagu tersebut. Well, they are sick enough to challenge more risks. Seperti yang ia nyanyikan dalam reff lagu tersebut “Mereka bilang aku bocah gila. Mudah berkata tanpa memikirkan resikonya”. Dengan gaya yang lebih seperti monolog di bait awal, lagu ini berisikan kritik-kritik tentang keadaan sosial di Amerika. Dalam video klipnya pun kita bisa melihat bahwa Drew ditonjolkan sebagai seorang vokalis bukan sebagai peramu musik, sebagaimana rekannya Alex Pall yang duduk mengiringinya dengan sebuah piano. Rilisan terbaru dari The Chainsmokers ini juga menuai kritik serta pujian dari beberapa website musik terkenal seperti Billboard, MTV, dan Fuse.

the heartthrob payback the robbed heart

Maybe it is too late to review an album released nearly a year ago, but I just unable to stop replaying this album. Well, I’m talking about debut album of Harry Styles. I might not be hardcore fans of one direction. But I’m one of the music fans who is eager to find out what do they on One Direction hiatus. Earlier, we have known Zany steal the start with his debut solo album which pretty good in the market and chart. Then we know the collaboration between the other two members, Louis and Liam with other phenomenal musician and DJ such Steve Aoki and Zedd. We also enjoy the determination of Niall Horan with his acoustic guitar in the debut album “Flicker”. I love all of them. But in case of Harry Styles, I was slightly disappointed by his first single “Sign of The Times”. To me, it was way too sad for a debut solo single.

I used to put a big expectation on Harry Styles to be a rock star with long hair, skinny jeans, black t-shirt, and carelessly moving and bouncing to a rock and roll song. Yes, that was my imagination about Styles solo career would be. And finding him in a short hair, suits, singing a sad song made me little bit disappointed. And that time I went “Harry Styles might be my favorite 1D member, but his solo song is the least”. But when “Kiwi” came out, I felt “Wow, this is what I expected from Harry Styles”. And after that I went down the whole album, and it was lovely. The music, his voice, the lyric, they are addictive. The songs are mainly rock. Some rock and roll, some slow rock and bit of blues. You might have listened to “Sign of The Time” and “Kiwi”. But you should make sure to check on the other song such “Sweet Creature” and “Two ghosts”. The album is perfect to chill out in the calm afternoon.

And now, I don’t bother whether he perform in suits, baggy pants, and acoustic guitar, I just love the crooning so much. Despite the reputation as girl heartthrob, I enjoy the maturity of his musical skill and sense. Wish this album going to get more attention, especially from the boys. Boys, you really have to check it out. This is the way the singer payback the heart he robbed from your girls.

A track by Korean hiphop producer, Code Kunst. Never thought that hiphop could be this chill. Oh Hyuk’s husky voice gives a blues in the beginning of the track. This is cool. And even more cooler when Dok2 kills the rap parts. The lyric is the best part, though.

Review  BIGBANG MADE SERIE D for non kpop fans

Me, know what? I know nothing. It is just an opinion. good music is always good to share, isn’t it? So what with Kpop? It is just a matter of language. Music will always be music. So check this out. 

SOBER

This track begin with G-dragon’s unique vocal. We’ll hear he’s singing more than rapping in this song. There is only one portion of rap flowed by TOP in the middle of the song. Well, with the strong drum and minimum electronic effect but at intro and chorus, this song sounds different from the other bigbang song which usually full of electronic sound effect. What make it spesial is that drum part is filled by Daesung, one of the bigbang member. They also perform this song having Daesung behind his drum set in the MV and even during their live peformance. For kpop fans, you might find a kinda de javu when listening to the bridge which is sung by Seungri and G-dragon. For you who watched bigbang performance in MAMA 2013, you might still remember to it. The part sung by G-Dragon as the intro of his Crooked performance is later on found as the bridge of Sober. Once again, it is a proof that this album is not an instant project, it is a long term project to gain pefection. Come to the coda, we’ll hear them singing together, and it is hipped me, despite of the fact that it is actually a sad song. Overall, this is the track that i like the most of the album.

IF YOU

Yang Hyun Suk, the CEO of YG Entertainment said that If You might have been he saddest song of bigbang after these nine years (allkpop.com). However, it is a well made ballad track you might shed tears. The song is about someone who feel regret since being left by his lover. There is no rap in this song. Instead, we’ll find all of them singing as vocalist accompanied by melodious accoustic guitar and percussion. At the beginning we can hear TOP singing in his deep voice, followed by Seungri sweet vocal. Daesung rock color is also give a strong splash on this song. As always, Taeyang mesmerized us by his soulful vocal. All the chours flowed by G-Dragon throaty voice. At the count down album release, G-Dragon stated that  the recorded the song in the dawn, in order to gain member’s miserable throaty voice. He got a unique sense, after all. The bridge is also pretty interesting, sung by the main vocal line, Daesung and Taeyang. This track shows unique vocals character of each member, includes the rappers that we rarely find singing in a whole song.

WE LIKE 2 PARTY

Listen to this song; I feel the atmosphere of partying at breezy and sunny California coastal beach. They put easy listening melodies in this track. it’s like a mixture between RnB and light reggae. If you enjoy simple plan’s summer paradise, you might enjoy this one too. You also have to check the mv. We usually see bigbang in many fabulous scenes but in this mv, you’ll only find a simple video (looks like video footage) shows bigbang members as themselves. You’ll find them carelessly partying as commonly free spirited young man, not as an idol group. It is interesting to see another side of bigbang members.

BANG BANG BANG

it seems that MADE series A wanna provide us with such kind of fabulous dance and party music. Just like the title, this song really gives a big ‘bang’ to the listeners. The banging tempo, the dynamic melodies, verses, chorus, everything are banging. The fast changing singing part, they’ll never let you stop banging your head or moving your body while enjoying the music. It seems that they make Bang Bang Bang as the sequel of bigbang’s 2012 Fantastic Baby. The video clip also is also able to boost up our mood to dance over this track. If you check bigbang performance at MAMA 2012 ( https://youtu.be/o6Qt7Vu1DPc ) you might find some similarities between the stage performance concept with Bang Bang Bang MV.

This track was released on June, and has been on Billboard’s World Digital Song for 20 weeks. It was debuted on the chart in the number one spot in June and back in the number three spot on the chart after they finished their tour at North America (Kpopstarz.com). this track is also nominated for song of the year in Mnet Asia Music Award (MAMA) 2015 and now they are in a fierce competition with EXO on that category.

Me, know what? I know nothing. It is just an opinion. good music is always good to share, isn’t it? So what with Kpop? It is just a matter of language. Music will always be music. So check this out.

LOSER

After listened to this song, I have a big question; why did they start their comeback with such a sad song? I thougt they need more spectacular thing. Well, we know (non kpopers will also know) bigbang is outstanding in making the listeners dancing and partying like crazy with their upbeat music, especially after Fantastic Baby. However, after listened to this track and also watched the MV, I got a feeling like; oh they really make a serious comeback. It going to be extraordinary comeback, since there will be following track launch as singles. And back to Loser, the MV making took a place at LA and it gives us a really different image as we know in common kpop band MV, they usually appear in a thematic dress code, a plain backdrop to emphasize their bold fashion, and dancing session in current formation. In Loser, you’ll never find that kind of stuffs. They really prepare to go word wide, I guess.  

This is a very RnB song, with slow rap rhythm.  This is unusual, but they begin the song with the chorus of TOP’s deep voice blended with Taeyang and Seungri sweet vocals. Taeyang’s soulful voice really goes with flow of this song, especially on the bridge. For the instrument, they use a simple sound with minimal electronic sound effect we usually hear from kpop song. We can taste thick American RnB on this song over and over.

BAE BAE

At first, I only listened to its chorus before going to the whole song. And what’s in my mind was; aaah it’s going to be another sad song in this M series, Loser. But after listen to this song over and over, I found some catchy sound feature. It blends well with the unique lyric written by G-Dragon and TOP. Well, after looked up at the lyric translation and watched the MV, I found that this song is implicitly erotic. Maybe this is the reason why we can hear G-Dragon seems singing in his hangover at the beginning and the end of the track. Billboard even said that Bae bae might be the most sexual Kpop videos from a male group ever. Fuse also praised the visual of the video as the ‘craziest visual’. And it also noticed bigbang talent by how they blend bad boy hip hop with emmotional boy band melodies.

Talking about melodies, there’s only little repetition in this song, and it feels really short. so suddenly it feels like; oh this is the end? It ended already? For the coda, you’ll find it really funny. You’d better check it by yourself soon.
