MERIADOC AND THE HORN OF EORL

JRRT has a tendency to give the most amazing payoff to the tiniest of things. I'd talk about Ëarendil and the light from the Silmarils that helped Frodo and Sam get past the watchers at Cirith Ungol, but many have written about this particular discourse.

Instead, I give you: Merry and horns.

Here's JRRT's set up:

Merry is feeling alone and useless in the middle of great events. He learns that Minas Tirith is surrounded by foes. Pippin is in Minas Tirith! Merry thinks to himself:

Merry wished he was a tall Rider like Éomer and could blow a horn or something and go galloping to his rescue.

Reinforcing the idea of horns blowing, and people coming to the rescue:

At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.

Later

But Pippin rose to his feet, as if a great weight had been lifted from him; and he stood listening to the horns, and it seemed to him that they would break his heart with joy. And never in after years could he hear a horn blown in the distance without tears starting in his eyes.

Merry mourns the fallen and thinks back to the battle where he won renown but lost Theoden his friend:

[T]he horn of Helm was loud in the mountains, until the Darkness came and King Théoden arose and rode through the Shadow to the fire, and died in splendour, even as the Sun, returning beyond hope, gleamed upon Mindolluin in the morning.

Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing. Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended; over death, over dread, over doom lifted out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.

But Merry stood at the foot of the green mound, and he wept, and when the song was ended he arose and cried:

‘Théoden King, Théoden King! Farewell! As a father you were to me, for a little while. Farewell!’

Éomer and Éowyn give Merry the horn of Eorl the Young, who importantly helped save Gondor the first time around.

'My sister begs you to receive this small thing, as a memorial of Dernhelm and of the horns of the Mark at the coming of the morning.’

Then Éowyn gave to Merry an ancient horn, small but cunningly wrought all of fair silver with a baldric of green; and wrights had engraven upon it swift horsemen riding in a line that wound about it from the tip to the mouth; and there were set runes of great virtue.

‘This is an heirloom of our house,’ said Éowyn. ‘It was made by the Dwarves, and came from the hoard of Scatha the Worm. Eorl the Young brought it from the North. He that blows it at need shall set fear in the hearts of his enemies and joy in the hearts of his friends, and they shall hear him and come to him.’

Then Merry took the horn, for it could not be refused, and he kissed Éowyn's hand; and they embraced him, and so they parted for that time.

MERRY BECOMES THE GREAT WARRIOR BLOWING A HORN AND RIDING TO THE RESCUE OF THE ENTIRE SHIRE.

‘Raise the Shire!’ said Merry. ‘Now! Wake all our people! They hate all this, you can see: all of them except perhaps one or two rascals, and a few fools that want to be important, but don't at all understand what is really going on. But Shire-folk have been so comfortable so long they don't know what to do. They just want a match, though, and they'll go up in fire. The Chief's Men must know that. They'll try to stamp on us and put us out quick. We've only got a very short time.

They rode back to the middle of the village. There Sam turned aside and galloped off down the lane that led south to Cotton's. He had not gone far when he heard a sudden clear horn-call go up ringing into the sky. Far over hill and field it echoed; and so compelling was that call that Sam himself almost turned and dashed back. His pony reared and neighed.

‘On, lad! On!’ he cried. ‘We'll be going back soon.’

Then he heard Merry change the note, and up went the Horn-cry of Buckland, shaking the air.

Awake! Awake! Fear, Fire, Foes! Awake! Fire, Foes! Awake!

Merry blew a horn-call after them as they rode off into the gathering night. The people cheered.

Merry blew a loud horn-call, and there were answering calls from a distance.

‘They won't get far,’ said Pippin. ‘All that country is alive with our hunters now.’

Ted gaped, for at that moment he first caught sight of the escort that at a sign from Merry now marched over the bridge. Dashing back into the mill he ran out with a horn and blew it loudly.

‘Save your breath!’ laughed Merry. ‘I've a better.’ Then lifting up his silver horn he winded it, and its clear call rang over the Hill; and out of the holes and sheds and shabby houses of Hobbiton the hobbits answered, and came pouring out, and with cheers and loud cries they followed the company up the road to Bag End.

Okay, so i know I'm between 70 and 24 years late in this little rant, but can we talk about how ride or die Merry is in Lord of the Rings?

Everyone talks about Sam because he tags along all the way to the end, but lets just think about how Merry and Pippin get roped into this whole nonsense.

Merry and Pip are just fucking around, stealing vegetables from their neighbor, and bump into a half cousin in the woods. Almost immediately Merry notices that Frodo and his gardener/situationship are being chased by some super sketch looking dark riders. Despite Frodo being cagey as hell, and the fact that said dark riders are about 3000% malevolence by volume, Merry hears that Frodo is fleeing the country and without missing a beat he's just like, "No sweat fam, let me take you to the nearest place to hop the border"!

Like, through the whole adventure Frodo knows he's responsible for the ring, Sam is a little over-serious with his wizard's oath (prolly cause he wants to eye-fuck Frodo while they live out the lyrics to I'm Gonna Be by The Proclaimers) and Pippin is just the dimwitted himbo who has no capacity to understand that what seems like a very fun rollercoaster to him is actually a chain of barely avoided Final Destination style deaths.

Merry, on the other hand, has no obligations and is smart enough to know he's fucking dodging death like the last kid alive in gym class on dodgeball day, but he keeps trucking anyway. He fucking coyotes the group to Bree, literally watches out the window while a lump of cotton cosplaying as him get prison shanked in the night, gets dragged into the wilds by Middle Earth Marlboro Man where he unwittingly starts a fireside brawl with a squad of undead mean girls after their man Strider fucks off to make a telephone call, leaving Merry, Pip, Frodo, and Sam with nothing but plot armor and high hopes to protect them.

All of this happens before Merry even got to read the plot blurb in the cover jacket, and when the group winds up in the Middle Earth equivalent of the Avengers tower where the most powerful badasses alive agree they should probably go on a suicide run to the volcano of deathtiny, and Merry just chills the whole time, rolling shotgun with his his bestie like it's the best Friday night ever and catching a body for Frodo is a squad goal.

This shit literally only covers the first book and isnt even getting into his side quest to get Arbor Day Roosevelt to join the war for Middle Earth Merry or his adventures as the world's smallest cavalry soldier, and all from a character who I can only assume was written when Tolkien met the ancestor of a modern Dunkin Donuts regular from south Boston.

Merry is the gangster of Lord of the Rings, and doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves.

My all time favorite Merry moment is in the last book in the chapter The Houses of Healing.

Merry wakes up and says he's hungry and wants a pipe after. He rembers Théoden's dead and says maybe not until Aragorn tells him to smoke in Théoden's memory. To which Merry asks Aragorn for a smoke since he's pretty sure he lost his pack during the battle.

And Aragorn's response is hilarious. It's a whole ass rant. Then after Merry apologizes Aragorn and Gandalf leave Merry and Pippin alone.

Pippin says some things about Aragorn before pointing out Merry's pack is right next to him and he'd had it the whole time with Aragorn knowing.

And the bit ends with them smoking. Should have made it into the movie 💯

Merry's so middle child coded to me and I love that he actually is in the middle of some of his cousins in age so it makes it all the better.

He's got Berilac Brandybuck and Frodo on his dad's side and Pearl and Pimpernel Took on his mom's for older cousins. Then of course there are Pervinca and Pippin that are younger.

This is only talking about cousins I feel he'd be closest to. And we don't actually know anything about his mom's (+ Pippin's dad's) three older sisters and their possible families but it'd be funny if he was still in the middle of all the cousins on that side.

underrated opinion, but honestly my favourite lotr friendship is merry and frodo.

frodo was a bucklander through and through; his mother, primula brandybuck, was the sister of rorimac “rory” brandybuck, the master of buckland at the time. he lived there since he was born right up until bilbo adopted him at the age of 21, and by that point, he’d been living in brandy hall for at least 9 years.

guess who was also living there, in the same home, at the same time? ding ding if u said merry brandybuck!! merry, the grandson of rory, was born 6 years before frodo left brandy hall after being adopted by bilbo, which means that they knew each other before pippin and sam.

frodo and merry knew each other before pippin and sam.

while the films didn’t have much time to display their relationship, merry and frodo always seemed similar in personality and shared a strong brotherly bond. you cannot tell me that scheming a plot to tag along with your cousin on their secret, mysterious, and apparently dangerous journey by eavesdropping, creating a conspiracy group, and jumping to reach after reach ISN’T little brother behaviour.

also, both are just incredibly sassy. like come on, these are hobbits that ridiculed saruman to his face and refused to offer tea to guests (probably earth-shattering in hobbit culture lmao)

it’s always a little treat to see a fanfiction or art piece every now and then of merry and frodo hanging out, especially when they were younger. i love imagining frodo dragging little merry with him to steal mushrooms and getting into trouble hfjfhd
