Ugh i hate how this is so right...

Guy is honestly one of my favorite characters in dc and I REALLY hate it when he's so negatively portrayed for no apparent reason. He truly is one of the characters that the non-gl reading dc fans have the most misconceptions about.

The fact that he's not conventionally attractive and has a big ego makes it really low-hanging fruit for people to write him as the typical bumbling egomaniacal butt-of-the-joke, and I believe that's just plain lazy and borderline hateful writing. The heroes having different personalities, beliefs and looks should be important in a story. Variety makes things interesting.

Moreover, there is zero character growth to be seen in the comic??? Guy had a complete 180 redemption arc with Hal in the span of a few issues before Emerald Dawn. It's not that the writers are incompetent, they just hate the character.

The ableism is particularly awful as well. I mean, the man got into two comas in a row, please have one single bit of human empathy.

I was confused about the "being scared of batman" thing when I was personally first reading early JLI stuff cause I had mostly caught up on the entirety of GL stuff up until Flashpoint, and there were multiple moments where he stands up to Bruce.

This also goes for the rest of the lanterns as well. I see some writers (that don't do anything for gl) writing the corps characters as either obnoxious, unintelligent, unserious and weak (Kyle, Hal and Guy specifically) or a completely flat character with no visible personality traits (John). Because according to them the intergalactic/otherworld stuff is "childish" and "not serious"?? At the very least I think that's the most plausible reason why they would characterize them as such.

Moreover, the lanterns are not all just "stupid" because they don't have solid plans before jumping into action and are very stubborn. They're supposed to be fearless, audacious and obstinate. They can act as challengers to other's morals/ideals, and that's a very crucial character to have in a full cast in my opinion.

Absolutely no hate to Batman fans (I love Dick and Tim they're also two of my favs), but I often see mostly batman fans perpetuating the gl slander because how they're often treated as a laughing stock in the comics. Then again, Bruce's character in gl comics isn't very positive either, so I guess it sorta is mutual. I simply find it funny how Bruce and Hal/Guy's (friendly) beef extended into irl fans of their respective comics lmao

The Lantern corps characters are honestly really interesting and fun, and I really really hope they get portrayed in a better light to the majority of dc fans in the future.

Sometimes I wonder why so many people have so many bad takes on Guy Gardner that don't much with what I had read of this character....then I remember JLI comics exist

Guy being unrepentent jerk with no depth? JLI

Guy being stupid and not understanding big words? JLI (very ableist take on writers part as Guy was activly recovering from brain damage and tried to relearn how to read and write only for other heroes and narrative to make fun of him for it, his struggle is written as a joke and a lot of readers ate that up)

Guy being weak and easly defeated? JLI

Guy being horribly misogynistic meathead? JLI (though, it's interesting how other male characters in this comic were the same way but Guy is the only one catching heat)

Guy being known for being ugly and only having bowl-cult? JLI

Guy being scared of Batman? JLI (and this one haunts batman fandom spaces even here on Tumblr)

JLI isn't a terrible comic but it is a terrible potrayal of Guy's character that destroys his image and perception in the eyes of readers to this day
