ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads

I got out of my first ever live Cirque du Soleil show a few hours ago (Mystère; thank you bestie for hyping it up to me so much, I deeply enjoyed it! :D), and maybe it’s the recent AO3 scrape that’s making me think this, but the whole show — and one act in particular — made me love human effort and creativity even more.
(For the record, I was too enthralled to take any pics during the show. Bear with me.)
Mystère has multiple physical and acrobatic performances as part of the show — flying trapeze, bungee, Chinese poles, and others — but the act that stood out to me (and my mom and grandma, given their multiple gasps on either side of me) was the hand-to-hand balancing act.
(Looking the show up online shows different people than the performers we saw. There’s a reason I mistakenly called them the ‘strongman’ act until I could properly research.)
(This video is old but you should get the idea.)
(This video is a snip of the female version of the act, which we didn’t see. Impressive nonetheless.)
I was up in the front row, and I could see the sheer amount of power and grace on display during the act — and they don’t have a safety net. They just have the hours of practice and training, a coating of talcum powder on their hands to keep their grips firm, and their trust in their partners to not slip up and get them hurt in front of a live audience.
And this was not effortless: I could see them trembling while keeping each other balanced and safe. This was not something just anyone could do; this is years of training on display.
A generational AI can make things look easy, but the quality will suffer, because the people behind them put no effort into it themselves. It’s built on the work of others, those that do put in the time and energy and drive to self-improve.
Something regurgitated from a genAI has no heart, because it doesn’t have the effort and practice and trust a true artist has in their audiences. There’s no talent snd effort put into it.
It’s late and I’m probably rambling a bit, but: a computer can replicate the looks of something creative, but it can’t replicate the work of true artists. And it certainly can’t replicate art created from the human body and human trust in each other.

I watched Tango's Limited Life POV recently, and I feel like his final death gets done dirty by fans.
It gets played of as this embarrassing "haha he tripped on a tiny ledge and died cause he was on half a heart", but homing in on just that scene ignores the entire context of what led up to this point.
Tango had an amazing run that season. He was the last green, and one of the last yellows. He was the boogeyman two episodes in a row, and pulled both kills off spectacularly.
Then, in a short amount of time, it all flipped on its head. He kept getting killed a bunch of times in a row, most of which through no fault of his own, as LimL was just like that and TNT could rain from above without any warning or spectacle.
He fell from grace, and was brought down to mere minutes left on the clock. He'd pretty much accepted his fate at this point, but was still willing to give one last desperate stand against Scar, who among others, had been one of the primary reasons for his suffering.
At this point, all rational thought was thrown out the window. And honestly, who could blame him? You may argue that he should've thought through this fight better, taking a moment to stop and heal, but then Scar could've gotten away.
And Tango couldn't risk that. He didn't have the time to wait for a "next opportunity". He'd either get the time now, or he'd die trying. And that's exactly how it played out. One clumsy mistake, brought out of a desperation for vengeance, for taking back what was lost. It's the tragedy of a fallen god, someone once great enough to have everyone else after them, now reduced to a nothing but a laughing stock.
TL;DR: Tango deserves more recognition for his Limited Life run, and his final death was more emotional than you might think.

With more and more Ao3 authors restricting their works to the archive (due to AI scraping), they're going to be losing guest interaction. And probably generally feeling down because. You know. AI is stealing their hard work.
So! Now is a great time to stop by your favorite authors/stories and drop them some comments! They really appreciate it!

"But I haven't written a book, I can't be a writer!"
To be a writer is not to have written a novel, or to have completed whatever amazing thing you're making. To be a writer is an IDENTITY. It is a part of you, it is a mindset, it is a way of life and a craving.
To be a writer is to be a creator. Of what, you might ask? Of legends. Of worlds. Of souls. Whether you put pen to paper or hand to keyboard, you are a god of the legend you're weaving.
You are a writer. Me too. Don't ever give up on your dreams.

Given the latest AO3 scrape, I’m going to lock my fics to user-only in a day or so. You’ve got until then to get downloads of anything you want to save.
Most of my stuff is collabs with @watcheraurora, who is also locking her works, but if you want to download the solo-written work I’ve done, this is your PSA.
