I made a bonus comic! A commenter on the fic said that it retroactively made Netossa spraying Catra with water a lot funnier and Astryn Serene and I thought that was so funny, we brainstormed this little comic together 😂.

Summary

“W-When did you realize who I was..?”

“The first time I saw you. Really saw you. I guess it was sometime not long before the portal. I’d never gotten a chance to really get a look at you before then. When I saw your eyes though… they’re a perfect mix of your dads’…” Netossa smiled, gently cupping Catra’s cheek, and making the brunette blush lightly, “And your dads loved you more than you could ever imagine. They did everything they could to protect and love you. All they ever wanted was for you to be happy.”

“I…” A frown formed as Catra looked to the floor. Her ears fell flat against the side of her head, “I failed them… I did so many bad things, hurt so many people…”

“Honey, you were manipulated by the Horde, you were a product of the environment you were raised in; you didn’t know any better.”

“Adora tried… she tried so many times to get me to leave, I-I thought she gave up on me after the portal…”

“She never gave up on you, Catra, and neither did I. And I’m going to speak on your behalf at the trial. I won’t let you be unfairly treated or tried without what really happened to you being out there.”

It’s my birthday!!

The last few months have been exceptionally difficult. For me personally, with my workplace being impacted so heavily, and for my country and the world as a whole, which is hurting in so many ways due to a combination of incompetence, apathy, and cruelty motivated by the greed and vanity of a few powerful people. It is hard not to feel powerless in the face of that. I am reminding myself, though, to step out of the current moment and appreciate the things that don’t suck:

* I am alive

* I am surrounded by friends and family who I love and who love me

* I have time for artistic expression, through art and dance

* I have cats!

* There are so many places to explore and so many new things to learn

* So many amazing cartoons exist 😂

* There are people writing wonderful stories and creating amazing art

* Even in the face of everything, my coworkers wore my silly party hats and celebrated with me today

* There is sushi and there is dancing, and I am enjoying both tonight with my amazing partner of 12 years

* There will be a time that isn’t this time

I have lived another year and I am determined to continue living and, as has been the philosophy of my thirties, continue to find joy 💖

Reminder that my Art Requests for Political Action are still available!! (See my pinned post!!)

My birthday is coming up (May 6), and getting some art requests in exchange for political action would be a great birthday present! If you don’t know what action to do, call or email your reps and ask them to stand up for the EPA’s Office of Research and Development, where I work. (Skip ahead for a script!!)

I am still holding the line and it’s HARD. Between demeaning emails, micromanagement, surveillance, multiple violations of our collective bargaining agreements and rights, and threats of firings held over our heads while we are offered buyouts, I am doing a lot of emotional labor just to keep doing my job and serving the American people. This has been going on since Inauguration Day. All of the environmental justice workers at EPA have already received notice of intent to fire. (To be clear—their crime is working in a program that has existed since the 90s and is focused on protecting the public health of vulnerable communities). We are expecting more waves of firings and it’s not going to be pretty. This is taking a long time because there are a lot of protections for federal workers so that the federal workforce isn’t dismantled and replaced every time there is an administration change (political control of the entire federal workforce is scary because an entirely political federal workforce is highly susceptible to fascism). This administration doesn’t care about the law, democracy, or the American people. I do!!

Help me defend worker’s rights and democracy with a phone call or email that takes you less than 5 minutes!! (And get an art request filled if you do!)

Below is a script specifically about EPA’s Office of Research and Development (where I work), which I personally wrote for you 😍:

Hello (Name of Rep). I am (your name) and I live at (your address, to show you are a constituent—you do not have to be voting age!). I am calling (or writing) to ask you to stand up for the EPA’s Office of Research and Development. I care about research that protects public health from harmful chemicals and other air and water pollutants and prepares for emergency response to natural and manmade disasters. I am concerned that a reduction in research scientists at the EPA will impact my and my family’s health. Please call or email me and let me know what you are doing to defend the scientific research that protects my health. (Offer email or phone number.) Thank you.

Find scripts for other issues on 5calls.org!!

In my experience, reps do not respond to phone calls, but they do respond to emails. If you call during working hours, you might actually get someone on the phone. If you don’t want that, call outside working hours and leave a message. Regardless of how you contact, they do keep a tally of how many people are for or against various issues. Your voice matters!!!

For this year's Big Bang event, I have decided to write a oneshot about Catra navigating life after the war, dealing with the legal side of what she's done, as well as finding family she never knew was there, waiting for her all along.

Catra slowly nodded, her ears folded against the side of her head, “Still doesn’t change or excuse my actions…”

Sighing, Netossa slowly nodded, “You’re right, it doesn’t, but it can help explain why they happened in the first place.” Netossa gently ran her fingers through Catra’s short hair, “Spinny will speak for you too, and we know Adora will. Everything is gonna be okay.”

Nodding again, Catra slowly rested her head against her aunt’s shoulder. It felt weird, to be affectionate with someone who wasn’t Adora. She didn’t know Netossa all that well, but hearing about her family, their family, realizing that Netossa had been through the same thing, the same feelings she had, she trusted her. Despite every survival instinct the Horde had drilled into her, she trusted her completely, “After it’s all over can… can you tell me more about my dads? About the times before I was taken and they were..”

A smile formed on Netossa’s face, “Of course I can, hun. I’d be more than happy too. Anything you wanna know about them, I’ll tell you.”

Hiccstrid!!! Perhaps my favorite on-screen couple ever; certainly in animation! I absolutely adore these two supporting each other and helping each other grow and come into their own. It is really rare to see couples on screen (particularly protagonists who aren’t parents) just *be*, no will-they-won’t-they, and these two are such a beautiful example of two very different people who have different ways of solving problems and different ways of being in the world, but who respect and understand each other deeply—ahh, I could go on and on about them!! (I’ll admit that I am biased because seeing them in these movies reminded me so much of me and my (now) spouse, who I got together with relatively young—19—and I had never seen an on-screen relationship that felt so true to my experience of partnership and growing into adulthood with a partner. It was super validating and emotional for me!) Anyways, I love these movies and I love these two ❤️❤️❤️!!!

At the Owl House Q&A at Requiem Coffee earlier this month, Avi Roque said Eda and Raine asked each other to Grom 😍. They also said Raine likes to do collage in their free time!!! So, naturally, here are Eda and Raine asking each other to Grom with their preferred art forms (Raine applying their budding collage passion 😂). (I am not sleeping on the comment that Raine hosts collage nights— I am in love with this and am coming back to it, but my plan is ambitious… we’ll see how that goes!)

On the bonus: The idea of putting Raine in a cape for Grom is from @thinking-with-quadrants; I could not resist borrowing it because it is too cute! They have delicate sleeves because Raine should get to wear something pretty now and then. If Eda’s jacket looks familiar… hear me out: what if Luz’s Grom jacket was borrowed from Eda??
