Today is my country’s independence day. For most of my life, I have taken my freedoms for granted. Now, after I’ve been through stay-at-home orders, when my country is facing the most risky election of its time, I am beginning to wake up to my own naiveté. Our freedoms can absolutely be taken from us. So today, while we celebrate our own fickle independence, I am asking you to take a moment to think about Honk Kong and what is currently happening there. . In 1997, Great Britain handed Hong Kong back over to China. Most people remember this as the definitive end to Great Britain’s empire, but those in Hong Kong probably remember it as something deeper and more threatening to their own lives and freedoms. For 23 years, Hong Kong opperated with separate laws to the Chinese Government, and was a safe space for anyone to come and talk about or criticize Beijing. Because of this and the capitalist economy Hong Kong was allowed to maintain, the city became a powerhouse full of innovation and art. It is still home to more skyscrapers than any other city, and it deserves to be treated with a ton of awe and respect. Hong Kong is bad ass. But it’s in major trouble right now. . You may have heard about the pro-democracy protests that are currently going on in Hong Kong. On Tuesday, the Chinese government passed a law basically stripping Hong Kong of its rights to free speech against the Chinese government. There have already been arrests. In China, there is actually a law protecting citizens of other countries from being arrested for something that isn’t illegal in their country of residence, but so far the law for Hong Kong does not have that stipulation. ANYONE can be arrested just for being in Hong Kong if they have said anything badly about China - even if they said that before entering the country. . I will be posting more info and sources with possible ways to help in my stories. Maybe share this or something similar to help educate others? Today, despite everything else still looking grim, despite Breonna Taylor’s murderers still not being held accountable, despite our cries falling on the deaf ears of our violence-hungry, white capitalist government - today is a good day. Because today we won one. A small battle that should have been won long ago. But a late win is still a win. We cannot give up on fighting for what’s right. Please keep being angry, keep protesting in whatever ways you can, keep calling in to your local governments and demanding change. I have made the tough decision to postpone my next single and my album. This was not an easy decision to make. I am excited and ready to share this, the physical album is arriving today and all I want to do is show it off. But I just feel like this movement is too important right now. I know this is 1000% not the normal or “professional” thing to do, but, well, I am unsigned and beholden to no one. And I feel very strongly about this. To those excited about the new single and album, I am so sorry to disappoint you! I am going to do something to make it up to everyone waiting! I feel it is very important at this time, as an ally, to take a step back and let oppressed voices shine. The single will come out next month, and I have decided to release the album on my Dad’s birthday, August 1st, as a sort of present to him 💕 . Our country is in so much pain. I stand with the protesters seeking justice for George Floyd. This country has suffered from systemic racism for far too long. We MUST demand that our police be held to the highest accountability. We MUST demand that all officers involved in George Floyd’s murder be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law. This is our duty to our fellow POC Americans, who are wounded after surviving years in a race war that the other side pretended had been long-over. The fight is not over! We have so far yet to go. .
