I feel that the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon has a weird chokehold over a lot of the DC fandom, particularly the parts that don't actually READ or even like COMICS, to the point where this show, whose creators openly admit had to be simple enough for a toddler to follow, largely informs a lot of fans' interpretations of some pretty complex characters, themes and continuity. The show, specifically, can tend to become nostalgia bait, and I think it's due time for a lot of this fandom to take off their rose-tinted glasses and let the show go.
Like I enjoyed the show growing up and I still have a soft spot for episodes like Lightspeed and Hide & Seek, but...frankly it's a simple show tailored to young kids that just does not, and was never meant to, do justice to the Titans' comic canon. This show could never have done Who is Donna Troy? and conveyed the unlabelableness of Donna and Dick's relationship, but it was never supposed to. Characterisations are intentionally dumbed down, themes are broken down into bite-sized morals, half of the show is dedicated to comedy, and character development is purposely few and far between because this show was designed for kids aged 2-11. And all that is fine but it's just not at all a reflection of what the Titans really are in print. It should not really inform any serious reading of the DC comic universe.
On the one hand, I really didn't need to see a Red X comic arc or Starfire talking in broken english in a comic, it's all just cheap nostalgia bait that people need to stop falling for. It's sacrificing theme in favour of cheap references. On the other hand, I do think the fans I'm talking about probably owe it to themselves to a) be a little more honest and critical about their engagement with DC media, and b) challenge themselves more when engaging in media to avoid wallowing in flanderized fluff.

It's insane how casually the calls to end a genocide, not just the students in Columbia University but pro Palestinian views in general, are labelled as terrorists. The audacity to still publicly support Israel's actions even after the horrific bombings these last months and then turn around to say that the ones who oppose it are violent anti semites is just baffling

Actually you know what it would make perfect sense if people saw Bruce Wayne as being anti-cop and anti-batman. He should be pouring money into mental health services, orphanages, halfway houses, social programs. He should be issuing damning public statements about police brutality and how increased policing hasn't decreased the crime in Gotham, how "broken windows" policing has seemed to do nothing other than agitate people with no criminal records into more desperate acts, including perhaps putting on a stupid costume and following around obvious malcontents like the Joker and the Penguin just to get cops off the streets.
Commissioner Gordon blasts Bruce Wayne in the papers, calling him a stupid rich boy, commenting that he's still a fearful little orphan boy more concerned with getting guns off the streets than focusing on jailing the types of people who used them against his parents.
Bruce Wayne calls Gordon a warmonger, an overpaid bully trying to strip rehabilitative services from Arkham in favor of capital punishment. He points to Harvey Bullock, who has dozens and dozens of civil complaints for abuses of power and police brutality, and yet remains on the force without a single suspension. Quipping, "and why? Because Commissioner Gordon thinks he's brave. Because Bullock will charge his men into the depths of Poison Ivy's lair without waiting for backup? How many rookies has he gotten killed? I wasn't aware Gotham Police Department was in the habit of rewarding stupidity. Is it a prerequisite for making detective or just a bonus, Mr. Commissioner?"
Some time when they're staking out a suspected Falcone hideout as the Commissioner and Batman, Jim turns to Bruce and says "that's a smart way to stop people from suspecting you're Batman, if a bit expensive and over the top." There's a pause. Batman deactivates the infrared sensors in his lenses and turns to look at him. Jim feels a slight chill.
"What are you referring to, exactly?" The cowled crusader rumbles, in that characteristic dark monitone that so frightens the villains of Gotham.
Gordon waves his hand in a noncommittal gesture. "You know. The whole...'acab' thing"
"is that what you think?"
The smallest hint of a smile tugs at the corners of Batman's mouth. He looks back at the building, re-entering surveillance mode. "That's not a ploy, Jim. You are all bastards"
Jim Gordon's mouth goes on a rather different journey, twisting into a deep frown. "That's not funny."
"Do I look like a clown to you?"
"now THAT really wasn't funny"
"commissioner, I'm not as complex as you seem to be giving me credit. I don't like the police. They capture people to punish them for their crimes. But what have you done to prevent them? What amount of head-busting corrupt baton policing has made Gotham safer? What have you done to end the economic and social conditions in Gotham that cause crime to be so prevalant, and so violent? Nothing."
"well that's the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it? What has the Batman done for that? Fat nothing"
"that's why Bruce Wayne does it. Because Batman doesn't have that kind of power."
"so then why bother? Why do the Batman thing in the first place? Why run around in the tight outfits getting half-killed every night?"
"part of it is that I know if I catch the bad guys first they'll go to get help instead of to a morgue"
"part of it, huh? Then what's the rest?"
A movement inside the building catches Batman's eye. He stands up straight and steps back from the ledge of building. No getting around it. He doesn't have the height to land on the roof and make a subtle entrance to the skylight. If he tries his grapple gun he'll be seen, and lose the element of surprise. Through the window it is. He hates going through the windows.
He positions himself for a running start. "the rest, Jim, is hubris"
"hubris?"
"I like showing you up, James." and with that he takes his leap, wings outspread, gliding to that far window and going through the glass with a loud crash.

I am still hoping for a God of War Loki spin-off, where we see Atreus/Loki and Angrboda traveling across the 9 realms and looking for other giants.
But mainly i hope that it'd start at some wedding or a party and first we'd see Angrboda come on screen lightly laughing and enjoying herself and calling behind her "Loki, c'mon!" And Loki is like "I am coming, i am coming" with a light chuckle and then SHE comes onto screen, and that's how we get introduced to Lokis shapeshifting being more than just to transform into animals, and then it's just an in-game mechanic where we can switch between a masc, fem and andorgynous models for Loki depending how we feel.
Basicly i just wish for genderfluid GoW Loki so badly (especialy after some fanarts where they look so. GOOD!!). Also i wish for more genderfluid Loki/Atreus fics that's not just smut between them and Heimdall.

(Thanks for the shout-out)
Personaly i feel like Nolans best performance is Hulk vs Wolverine because there i heard some roughness in there at times, but in voice specificaly i think the best was John Kassir of Ultimate Alliance.
youtube
One thing i wanna add to the Denis Leary thing is that i believe Wade IS funnier tho (Denis falls upon some of the old white man conservative humor whitch kinda falls flat, tho his energy and intonation and sound effects are really great).
I will also hold back from making a "Of course the worst performance is when he's around Taika Watiti, especialy when he's there as the worst MCU character in existence" short rant here because i do NOT have the energy for it and it'd be mostly swears and insults.
Deadpool's voice and its media portrayals
I read this post by @jhirowolf and @spider-mand, which inspired me to make my own post specifically about dp's voice - please read the og post first!
In the comics it's known that Deadpool has a unique voice - his speech boxes are yellow while everyone elses' are white. What makes it unique is its quality (it's described as rough, raspy and gravelly) but I also think that it's its cadence too (i'll get in to this below). Unfortunately, Ryan's voice in the movies doesn't really come close to this - for multiple reasons.
Ryan's voice physically is very smooth and also pretty high but I get the sense that as dp, he doesnt really do much for his voice, he is pretty much just himself and cracking jokes. As @jhirowolf pointed out, he kind of has this smooth, sarcastic tone. For me the vibe is that of a stereotypical side-character who mumbles sarcastic comments at whatever the other characters are doing. Ryan's voice is often mellow, calm and even
I dont have concrete examples right now, but in the comics SO many characters call Wade insane mere minutes upon meeting him, despite the fact that they dont know anything about him apart from the fact that he is a mercenary.
Why? Because of his voice!
Immediately upon hearing him talk they conclude he is unhinged and unstable and generally unwell. He's loud, aggressive, speaks a mile a minute and on top of that makes dark jokes serious situations that no one else laughs at. It freaks people out and rightfully so! Adding on to this, I think he varies his pitch and rhythm frequently, further making him appear unstable because his voice is never even or monotone for more than a few seconds. I'm basing this on the fact that his speech bubbles are so much bigger than everyone else's (he talks a lot) and also bc he varies his facial expressions and body language a lot when he speaks.
@jhirowolf mentions that Denis Leary was the inspiration for his voice, which i had no idea about but looking at this video, I think his cadence is perfect. You feel that unlimited energy, the loudness, the unpredictableness, his voice and the look behind his eyes make him seem manic and frantic - which it should! It puts people on edge around him, gives him his reputation of being unpredictable and also makes him regard him as insane. Wade doesnt give a shit about norms for socializing, how loud or crass he is - hes got shit to say and hes gonna say it, no matter how much it may annoy, offend or make others uncomfortable
youtube
i think the teaser trailer for the first movie could be Ryans best work when it comes to wades voice
youtube
Conversely, this video could be the worst:
youtube
Like this is purely Ryan, theres no deadpool here. its just his own shameless self-promo in a dp suit
Nolan's voice, on the other hand, isn't perfect either bc it kind of has the similar smooth quality as ryans, its not gravelly, raspy or anything. But his cadence is soo good! He's calm one minute but you never know when he's gonna snap and lose his shit, i love it
youtube
And yeah, Nolan's performance and the funny moments are the only good thing to come out of this game (well i guess another positive is that it made him more popular, it certainly was one of my first encounters which made me interested in him). The bad thing is the amount of damage it did to the complexity of dp's character - they stripped away his layers, the serious and tragic parts that make up who he is, instead of this they literally gave him 1 trait - insane. And that was it. I blame Way's 2008 run for this bc he essentially did the same thing - but the game turned it up to 11. Way at least included several serious and earnest moments where Wade was forced to be introspective and face his issues
in conclusion - so far our ears havent yet been blessed to hear wade's voice

I totaly agree with this tbh, also like...Wade and Ness canonicaly broke up in Circle Chase because of who Wade is.
But the movies taking scenes from the comics and making them more happy and nice or make Wade look nicer is a whole thing, like the scene with the Pizza guy is taken from Daniel Ways run (the Bullseye arc specificaly) and there Wade blows the guys head off, eats the pizza before him and the (in the comics very rich and very chill) guy, then decided to rob the guy because he was obviously loaded while Wade was broke. And that's a thing that's all over the movie in terms of his relationships with everyone around him.
The more Deadpool comics i read, the less i feel like Ryan Reynolds fits him and that makes me feel....odd, like kinda left out from all the love this casting is getting. He was really good as Wade Wilson in X-men Origins, his Weapon 11 is terrible and an insult to the character of Deadpool tho.
But when he got his own movie he was just Ryan Reynolds, and i know, i know "ofc he is, he's played by Ryan" sure but....that just feels off for me, and i wanted to know why, and i think i got it.
Firstly it's the way he talks, Ryan has this tone of voice that doesn't fit the way Wade usualy talks in the comics, his kinda high smooth sarcastic tone feels off to me. Partly because Wade doesn't sound like that at all, Wade has a very rough voice, sounding like Demi Moore, his voice sounds like wet gravel, according to Cable and Blind Al. Ellie, his daughter, said his voice sounds weird, whitch Wade said it's because of the scar tissue.
Also the way he talks, his jokes and the tone of his voice doesn't fit the DP energy. Fabian Nicieza, Deadpools co-creator and writer of most of his 90s appereances before Kelly wrote the first run, said he imaged Wade to sound like Denis Leary, whitch for the ones not aware, is a very unhinged and agressive sounding man, and it fits perfectly the way he talks.
Also Fox!Wade's humor isn't really the same as comics!Wade, movie Wade uses references, complicated swears and names with alot of sarcasm. Comics Wade meanwhile?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not so much, he also doesn't even break the 4th wall as often usualy, some of those aren't even too obvious 4th wall breaks.
One thing i feel like the movies got right is Wades softness, he's a very emotional man, especialy when it comes to relationships and other people.
One thing the moves didn't quite get right is Wade and his violence problems, in his first comics he was fighting with his violence, his past, he was trying to be better after years of being a villian, and that change is often brought by his nee crush or love interest or idol, because he wants to be better for them, even if he usualy doesn't feel worthy of their love, yet he tries and tries.
There was a deleted scene in one of the movies where he and Vanessa were in Mexico and Wade lost it and killed the scamming doctor and it perfectly showed Wades issues.
His relationships were also all made simpler, Weasel is his fuctional friend, Ness is his girlfriend, Al is his funny roommate and friend. Back then Wade and his relationships weren't simple, he was like Moon Knight, he experimented, he wasn't very known, he was allowed to be odd and weird and out there. And i blame the game tbh, because now the movie was heavily influenced by what the internet thinks Deadpool is and the character is suffering for it now. Maybe i am just a jaded edgy 18yo but that's how i feel.
Now you're propably thinking what would my solution be, well i got a solution in mind, but you most likely won't wanna hear it...but i will still tell you in the next post.

Sometimes I feel like only Peter Parker gets how humbling it is to be poor jesus christ. I am enjoying my time despite not being my cup of tea (I am a dialogue person, I love dialogue I love dialogue as a dog loves little delicious treats. 60's comics unfortunately do not have the best kind of dialogues). But I am enjoying it, almost as a concept, hecause Stan Lee and Robin Dikto do not have the fear to show a pathetic little man, they don't have the embarrassment of showing your hero getting rejected by the girl, forgetting to let his suit dry and having to wear a wet scrunky suit, showing him being arrogant, being annoying, a very very antisocial guy.
I think reading so so many comics where it's clear how much the writers are trying to make the hero sound cool, the smartest, handsomest and smoothies guy in the room.
Peter is kind of a breath of fresh air. He gets it, he really does. He's not cool, he's not there yet. He's a kid doing dumb shit. Trying to do better, failing and failing and trying. No wonder so many people who got to read his comics as they were growing up hold Peter so close to their heart.
Because he's the proof you can try again, you can fuck up, in ten, twenty, thirty hell maybe forty years from now it won't matter. Just try again. Stand up. Try again.
@sciderman talks a lot about how Spider-Man is about reaching manhood and I've never get it, sure as a concept yes but I couldn't grasp why. Now I do.
It's not about waking up and being the man you should be, being responsible for having a cool montage of getting better and better. Nah it's the every day thing. Peter isn't (at least what I am getting of the comics while I read at my pace and time) the representation of becoming the power and responsability thing, he is the representation of having this as a goal. And trying each day.
