Or...
IN WHICH a teenage witch dreams of a fairytale love story, only to fall for Beacon Hill’s newly turned werewolf
chapter warnings: angst, social anxiety, some fluff
word count: 4.3k
THE MONDAY after Winter formal, the student body of Beacon Hills Highschool felt a strange buzz, an almost electric energy in the air. There was a lot to talk about after all, the weekend had left the sophomores in a mix of confusion and annoyance. Confusion, for the dance ended in quite a panic after police and ambulances arrived, and annoyance, for the night had ended earlier than expected.
From Wini’s position, her back leaning against her locker, she could see the students moving in a frenzy. Many tried to quickly stuff their backpacks’ entire contents into their lockers before the first bell went off, while others were speaking in loud whispers. The newest gossip took Beacon Hills by storm, Lydia Martin, the queen bee of Beacon Hills Highschool was attacked Friday night at Winter formal.
That fact in itself, shot a pang of guilt deep in her heart. Maybe she should have called or texted. Maybe she should have visited Lydia in the hospital. That thought made Wini quickly shake her head, ridding herself of that stupid suggestion. Lydia had made it very clear that she did not want to hang around with the likes of her. Which hurt, sure. Of course it did. Winifred had been best friends with Lydia Martin since seventh grade. How quickly she had replaced her. One look at Allison Argent, Beacon Hills’ newest addition, and Wini was old news.
Obviously, the queen bee would not be caught dead with the likes of the young Grimm now. One round of ‘truth or dare’, in which her dare entailed to kiss some partygoer and the entire clique of Lydia’s minions found out that Winifred Grimm has never had her first kiss. Which shouldn't have come as a surprise to Lydia, Wini never talked about boys or any conquests she had, like Jackson’s friends always did. Once Josh, one of the aforementioned miserable friends, labeled her as a ‘prude’ and the girl’s social life, which wasn’t really one to begin with, was officially over.
Jackson had laughed and agreed with him, Josh, the name made her skin crawl. He went to the college in town and was twenty-one years old, what kind of twenty-something year old hangs around with a bunch of teenagers. Her whole body shook at the thought of him. What a weirdo. But he was legal drinking age, so he could provide the group with alcohol, hence why Jackson liked him. Lydia had stopped thinking for herself the minute she excitedly told Wini that Jackson was her boyfriend in eighth grade. Jackson thought of her as a prude so Lydia thought she was one too.
First she stopped inviting Wini to things, deeming it ‘not her crowd’ anymore. Then she stopped talking to her entirely, they used to talk for hours on the phone, those calls stopped too. The weekend shopping sprees Lydia insisted on so much also took their timely demise. She missed the old Lydia, who would have laughed and gossiped about girls like her. Once, she realised boys don’t like smart and loudmouthed, she changed her entire personality, going from Wini’s best friend to dumb bimbo in the matter of a day. Lydia was just so…the groan that left her mouth was apparently so loud her locker neighbour gave her a long look. Wini could only give her a sheepish smile before quickly looking away, scanning the hall once again. God, she was such an embarrassment.
Speaking of embarrassment, she had the misfortune of making eye contact with Jackson, who stood across the hall. When their eyes met, his narrowed into small slits. They looked at each other for a few seconds before he eventually realised he had better places to be. He gave her his signature scowl, he adjusted his heavy lacrosse bag over his shoulder and turned to walk away, bumping said shoulder against a jumpy freshman, who apologised immediately to his highness like he was the one to crash into him. What a douche.
Wini was going to head to her own class, she had chemistry first period after all, with Mr. Harris of all people, who would not appreciate her tardiness. But something made her pause, she watched Jackson retreat for a second longer. He looked…unwell. Pale and fragile, like a gust of wind could blow him away. She slapped her hand against her forehead to reprimand herself. She was such an idiot. Of course he looked unwell. His girlfriend was in the hospital! Or his ex-girlfriend or whatever. Here she was complaining about her miserable life, calling Lydia a bitch and him an absolute asshole. He must be so worried about her. Another wave of guilt hit her. She stared at the tiles of the ceiling like they had personally wronged her.
She sighed, final. Alright, after school she was going to visit Lydia in the hospital. If she wants to see her, great. If she didn’t, whatever, she was already getting over everything that happened. Totally. This was definitely not the time to be petty, her friend was hurt and she needed her. Wini finally got the sense to leave her spot that rooted her to the floor.
Yet, she couldn’t shake the aching feeling in her stomach, something was wrong, something bad was going to happen or maybe it already has.
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
SHE HAD BEEN INTENTLY staring at the clock that was mounted on the wall at the front of the classroom. The minutes were going by too slowly, when the clock showed her that only ten minutes had passed she wanted to bang her head against the table. Her gaze drifted down towards to the assignment she was supposed to be doing and her frown turned into a pout. This was a waste of time, last period of the day and surely the most dreadful. Her french teacher was on maternity leave, no reason why they should sit in a quiet classroom with a substitute, with Coach Finstock, who’s only grasp on the French language included ‘bonjour’ and ‘au revoir’, instead of just canceling.
Her head was leaning against her hand and her pencil was continuously hitting the paper, waiting for the bell to free her from her misery. “Okay, just go through the worksheet with a partner and then au revoir your way out of here”, Coach spoke through the silence, her gaze slowly lifting up towards him. No one moved. “What are you degenerates looking at? Get moving!” To emphasise his point he grabbed the whistle around his neck and deafened the first two rows of the class. Great, group project.
She watched the room for a second, staying seated for now, looking to her left and right seeing if her seat neighbours maybe wanted to work with her. When she found that they already left to find their friends, she pushed her chair back with a heavy feeling setting over her heart and grabbed her bag from the floor. Her hands grasped her unfinished worksheet in front of her, trying to shield herself from the people around her pushing themselves to get to the front. She turned in a circle, glancing around the room for a potential partner. Her eyes eventually settled on him.
He was tucked away in the back, letting a few people walk past him before he got up himself. He didn’t completely rise to his tall frame, his shoulders were almost inched forward, his gaze firmly set on his shoes. Almost like he tried to shrink into the blue hoodie he was wearing, to make himself seem smaller than he actually was. His brown curly hair covered his eyes, he was so adamant at staring at the floor she couldn’t even tell what eye colour he had. Something told her that perhaps he had the same sinking feeling in his stomach at the thought of doing yet another assignment alone. Maybe she could ask him to partner up.
She could do that, right? She could walk up to him and say: ‘Hi! Want to work together?’ Yeah, of course she could. He’s just a boy.
When his head finally perked up from what must be a very uncomfortable position for someone as tall as him, their eyes met. He had blue eyes. And with his face directly pointed at her she could see a fresh bruise starting to form by his eye. It made her falter for a moment. The surprise that crossed his face must have snapped her out of the daze of dumbly staring at him and she had to take a second to reboot her brain. She herself was very surprised to see him right in front of her, after all she couldn’t remember walking up to him, but here she was.
Wini opened her mouth gawking at him like a fish. Come on, Wini. You can get the words out. Just speak. “Hi! Want to do…together?” Was that an English sentence? Idiot.
She had the sudden urge to turn around and walk out of the classroom. But before she had the chance, he was already nodding his head. He either didn’t hear her, which she was secretly hoping for, or he simply ignored it. And she couldn’t decide which of the two was better.
Gripping her worksheet a little tighter, she mentally cursed herself, she hated this, talking, doing this assignment, being this awkward version of herself that can’t get a basic sentence out of her mouth. The tiny voice in her head already told her how annoyed he must be at her presence. Perhaps he was hoping to partner up with one of his friends and was just nice enough to agree to work with her so she wouldn’t be alone, maybe he took pity on her, maybe, maybe, maybe.
She was gawking at him again, and before she could once again turn around and walk out of the room, he spoke up for the first time, mistaking her silence as a need to introduce himself. “Winifred, right? It’s Isa-”, and before her brain could keep up with her big mouth, she interrupted him. “I know who you are, Isaac.” He promptly closed his mouth, his lips slowly forming an ‘oh’.
“You’re on the lacrosse team, right? Lydia drags me to all the practices because of…Jackson. And you’re pretty hard to miss”, stop talking. “You know being so tall…you must be tallest on the team”, still talking.
“I don’t know about the ehm tallest…but I guess there’s a reason I play first line”, his smile was soft and Wini was able to detect the honesty in his words, a relief that she hadn’t scared him off with her blabbering entirely.
“Sorry, once I start to ramble it’s really difficult to stop and I just word vomit”, returning a grateful smile of her own.
“It’s okay, it’s nice being noticed.” Well, count yourself noticed, Isaac.
“We should probably start before Coach notices and uses that awful whistle again”, their classmates were deep in conversation, most likely not even having started on what Coach told them to do.
“Yeah, sure”, he ran his hand through his hair, a nervous habit maybe.
Wini decided it was probably better to work sitting down, she proceeded to move around Isaac and towards two tables next to each other, while he followed closely behind. She shyly smiled up at him and set down her stuff.
“We could compare answers, see what we got and go from there?”
“Sounds good”, he wasn’t much of a talker, but apparently she spoke for both of them, a lot.
They exchanged their worksheets and spent the next few minutes in silence. Looking at Isaac’s answers she was able to add another fact on the seemingly detailed list of his character she was keeping now. He was really good at French.
Between reading she would give him subtly glances, how he, even now hunched over her paper like it physically hurt him. Maybe it did, the black eye was certainly not a good look. Should she ask? They didn’t really know each other. She knew what they say about him, what Jackson and his lackies say about him, that he was weird because he worked at a graveyard. But that’s Jackson, Wini didn’t exactly think highly of him, so she decided that his opinions really didn’t matter. He was a bully after all.
“You finished?”, the sudden sound of his voice broke her train of thought immediately and her body tensed. Finished staring at him?
“What?”
“The worksheet…you finished reading through it?”
“Oh, yeah”, she returned his paper to him. “Looks good, as far as I can tell at least, didn’t see anything wrong with your answers. You’re pretty good, yeah…so you get an A+ from me.”
“That’s high praise coming from you”, he smiled, not the shy smile from before, an actual smile that showed his teeth. Wini felt her cheeks flush, partly from her awkwardness and partly from the fact she made him smile. She decided at that moment that she liked the feeling. “Yours looks pretty good too”, he handed her her own paper. “Other than…”, Isaac gestured to the last part of the worksheet, the part she didn’t answer.
“I was going to do it…it was just…the clock on the wall seemed more…interesting.”
He opened his mouth, maybe to say something funny that would make her shyly laugh, but he was promptly interrupted by the bell. Announcing the end of the lesson and as well as their conversation it seems, since Isaac immediately shot out of his seat. She quickly stuffed her paper into her bag and swung it over her shoulder.
Wini was right behind him, she scanned the room with one glance, her classmates seemed to not be the only ones relieved for the end of the day as Coach was the first to leave the room.
“Guess I’ll see you at practice?” Isaac had turned back around to look at her.
She didn’t have the heart to tell him, ‘no sorry, the only reason I went was because of Lydia and she has decided that I’m not cool enough to hang around her anymore.’
“Yeah, sure. I’ll see you at practice,” he nodded and gave her a small wave, which she returned with ‘bye’ and a smile.
The halls were already crowed once she reached the door, getting to the parking lot would be quite a challenge with basically the entire student population gathered in one spot.
She’d get there eventually.
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
SHE WAS PUSHING her peas around on her plate, this is how dinner in the Grimm household always was nowadays. Silent, until it’s filled with smalltalk that has no real point to it other than cover up the tension that suffocated the room.
“Did you have a good day at school?” Here he goes.
She loved her older brother, of course she did. And yet, she couldn’t help but feel upset. They sat at opposite sides of the table, which made the room seem even more empty than it already was.
“It was good”, other than the fact that she’s completely alone and has absolutely zero friends.
“Will you be joining us on Sunday?”
“Of course, wouldn’t miss it”, he gave her a curt nod and continued to cut into his steak.
“How’s Lydia?”
“Still in the hospital, I’ll go see her later.”
“Right, I heard about what happened. Poor girl.”
“You really think it was an animal that attacked her?”
“Winifred…”, stern, warning, maybe angry.
“What did Derek Hale want to speak to you about last Friday night?”, she needed to know, what if he was the one who hurt Lydia.
Harvey stared at her for a long moment before speaking, “Winifred, this not something we are discussing right now”, his lip was set in a straight line.
“Something bad is happening, I did a reading yesterday, the omens are not in our favour.”
“Wini, I’m handling it”, his voice softened just a smidge, trying to ease her worry.
“What does that even mean? What’s it? What’s being handled?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“All I do is worry”, the anxiety that has been building up these past few days has finally reached its limit. “I worry about you, Lydia, school, the coven, the ‘animal attacks’. Please, Harvey…please, ease this small part of my worries.”
“You don’t need to worry about that…I don’t want you to worry about, because your big brother is handling it, like I’ve always handled things”, he threw his utensils against his plate, the loud noise almost made her flinch. “And now, I will be getting back to work”, his chair screeched against the hardwood floor as he stood from his chair.
Harvey braced himself against the wooden table with his left hand and took the cane that was leaning next to him. He started walking towards the stairs, his limp becoming more noticeable as his cane scraped the floor.
“I thought we were doing this together”, her voice made him halt in his stride, only for a moment.
“Not this time.”
Wini sat there alone for a while, taking in the suffocating atmosphere. She sat there until she heard the door to his office slam shut. Her hands pushed her chair back, she needed to get ready to go see Lydia. She stepped towards the stairs, the old wood creaking under her weight before she reached her bedroom door.
She changed into a simple light pink sweater and jeans, she clutched her crystal pendant she wore around her neck for a second. For comfort, to ground her in the moment or she might start to cry. This was so unfair. But she couldn’t dwell on it for too long. Maybe she should pick up something for Lydia on the way to the hospital, flowers or something, anything really.
She grabbed her phone that she left on her vanity, her hand moved to pocket it but stopped in the midst of doing so. Her eyes caught onto the small talisman on her windowsill, it was hand carved out of wood, a purplish stone sat in its centre and it was wrapped in a thin string with entwined leaves. The round shape resembled a small wheel. Harvey made it, like many of them in the house. They sat on windowsills, next to doors or sometimes in open spaces. They were for protection, to ward of evil, nothing can enter the house if it is not invited inside.
The small wooden talisman felt light in the palm of her hand, Lydia needed the protection it could offer her more than Wini did. Her bedroom sat on the second floor, no one could climb this high up without a ladder. Lydia needed it more, Wini told herself. The talismans were not the only barrier set in place. Harvey wasn’t even going notice. If it really was Derek Hale that attacked Lydia, than her protection was vital. And she knew how dangerous this could become, especially since there was a very high possibility that Lydia could not only harm herself but others. She needed to be careful, she could be dealing with a werewolf or worse, a pack of them.
Alongside her phone the piece of wood sat in the back pocket of her jeans. She put on her sneakers, took the car keys from the marble bowl that sat on the dresser next to the front door and made her way to the hospital.
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
THE FLUORESCENT LIGHT of the hospital never failed to creep her out, she could already imagine Lydia complaining that the lighting made her look unflattering, which eased her discomfort a bit. After a nurse pointed Wini in the direction of Lydia’s room, while she walked down the endless hallways, she was fiddling with the plastic packaging of Lydia’s favourite candy or it used to be until she claimed that it made her fat, but Wini knew Lydia secretly still liked it.
When she turned the corner and saw Mr. Martin talking to a nurse, Wini knew she was in the right place. She looked around the waiting area in front of what she assumed to be Lydia’s room. Just a few chairs that sat against the wall, nothing to particular about them other than the sleeping boy with a ‘Get well!’ balloon that was laying on top of them. She was surprised to see him, buzzcut, drool coming from his mouth, Stiles, no doubt.
“Winifred, hey, it’s good to see you. Are you here to see Lydia”, Mr. Martin had apparently already spotted her and turned towards her.
“Hi, Mr. Martin. Yes, I came to see how Lydia was doing.”
“That’s good to hear, she needs all the support she can get”, that wasn’t something Wini wanted to hear. Had Lydia been needing support all weekend long and she was too much of a coward to call or visit? It made her heart drop to her stomach. God, she was such a bad friend. “She’s in the shower right now, but once she’s finished you can go in and see her. I’m sure she will be happy to see you”, she hoped so too.
“Oh, okay, I’ll just wait…here”, glancing at Stiles, who was taking over three seats.
“He’s been here all weekend”, the nurse behind them mentioned. All weekend? Stiles has been here all weekend? Bad friend, Wini reminded herself. Stiles of all people had been with Lydia all weekend and Wini hadn’t even sent her a text that said ‘U good?’. Stiles, who has been lusting after Lydia since the third grade, who has been getting nothing but the cold shoulder has been here this entire time and Wini couldn’t even sent one lousy text? The painful pinch in her stomach intensified. She told herself it was because of the guilt and not the hint of envy that she felt at the fact that Lydia had someone so attentive waiting for her. She must admit it was sweet. Stiles so worried about Lydia, she wondered where Jackson was at this moment.
Stiles, who has been mumbling and drooling all over himself in his sleep, finally awoke from his slumber, not very gracefully, since his balloon seemed to have a personal vendetta against him and he stumbled up from his resting place. They had econ together and he was another lacrosse player or at least he was most definite on the team…he just never played. He always sat on the bench with Scott McCall, his best friend, but Scott went from bencher to overnight sensation, so Stiles sat alone. Lydia had always told Wini what she thought of Stiles, while she definitely liked the attention he gave her, he was a weirdo and not boyfriend material. But since the one Lydia deemed boyfriend material to be Jackson, that assessment should not be trusted.
“Winifred. Wini. Hey. What are you doing here?”, he very loudly announced to the entire hallway, with a brig grin on his face.
Wini only gestured towards Lydia’s room, “Here to see Lydia? Great. Fantastic. Perfect. Yeah”, he was rambling, which he probably noticed when she only smiled at him awkwardly. “Yeah, so…I’m going to get something from the vending machine, want anything?”
“No, thank you”, it was nice of him to offer but with her aching stomach, anything sweet would be a very bad idea right now, in case she vomits from guilt.
While Stiles went off towards said task, Wini sat down on one of the chairs to wait for Lydia. Before she could go down a another rabbit hole about how she was a terrible person, a bad friend or about the whole attacked by an ‘animal’ thing, she was interrupted by loud continuous banging. She peeked around the corner to look at the troublemaker, Stiles was hitting the vending machine like it personally wronged him.
“What are you doing?”, it didn’t take long to stride over to him and confront him.
“The vending machine swallowed my money and won’t give me my Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups”, he hit the glass again.
“That won’t help.”
“What will?”, he smacked it once more. “Come on!”
“Certainly not that”, it was like he didn’t even hear her, instead of hitting the glass he had the great idea of shaking the whole damn thing. “Okay, stop.”
He grabbed the top of the machine with both hands and shook it until it started to topple forward and fall onto the ground with a deafening bang. He was able to escape ‘death by falling vending machine’ by quickly stepping out of the way and completely knocking into her.
“Stiles, what the hell!”, they would surely get in trouble now because Stiles Stilinski lacked basic thinking skills. He only gave a ‘shit’ in response and moved to the other side of the broken machine, crouching down to start trying to lift it back up.
“Well, don’t just stand there, help me.”
“Stiles, you can’t be seri-”, a scream that echoed across the entire hospital interrupted the rampage she was going to give him. Once she realised it came from Lydia’s room, her heart dropped.
Stiles immediately abandoned his task and sprinted down the hall. “Lydia!”
Wini followed closely behind the boy, them, Mr. Martin and the nurse busted into the hospital room of Lydia Martin. Trying to access the threat, they scanned the room with their guard up. With a sense of urgency Stiles pushed open the bathroom door, before Wini could chide him to stay out of the bathroom, where a probably naked Lydia was. She was met with an empty room and a running shower.
The talisman felt heavy in her pocket.
Lydia was gone.
