Here’s a really fun series of illustrations that I recently did for the Teaching Tolerance website! Each image was used for a different page within the site including the Login, Comment Submission, and even the Error page (that’s the one with the owls), so I was able to play around with a good variety of themes and settings. Many thanks to Valerie Downes for the great direction and awesome project!

Here’s a recent series of illustrations that I did for the new issue of Dornsife Magazine. It was for a fascinating article titled “Hanging by a Thread?”, which examines the increasing mortality rate of white middle aged men and women, a trend that seems to have started around 1998. Since the subject matter had an unavoidable darkness to it, they wanted to instead focus on the positive change that can hopefully come from further study of this complex issue, hence the unwinding thread theme that runs through all of the images.
I also had the opportunity to do a little hand lettering for the inside spread which you can see above, along with the sketches for the final image. Many thanks to Dan Knapp for the fantastic direction and for giving me so much space to play in! To read the full article you can click here:

Here’s a cover/interior spread that I did for a recent issue of National Underwriter Magazine. The feature is about building a more attractive website in order to captivate the right kind of clientele. An enormous high five to the amazing Tim Schafer for supplying a great theme and getting the ball rolling with the pied piper concept. In the end he went with the moths and the lantern, which allowed me to really sink my teeth into some fun dramatic lighting :)

Cover illustration for the business section of last Friday’s New York Times. The article it went with was about the top executives in the US and how many of them have privately met with Donald Trump since he recently took office. As always many thanks to the incredible Minh Uong, and if you want to read the full story then you can go here:

So a little while back I stumbled upon an amazing picture of a pangolin and instantly knew what my next personal piece was going to be the second I could make a little extra time between assignments. When I finally sat down and started looking for reference, I soon discovered that the pangolin species has tragically become one of the most illegally trafficked animals on the planet and their numbers are rapidly dwindling. Poachers are slaughtering these poor creatures by the thousands for their scales, meat, and blood (which is apparently used as a “healing tonic”).
I’m not normally one to get up on a soapbox but after learning about the horrific treatment of these animals I feel the need to help get the word out and do my part. So I’m posting this image to help spread awareness and if you like the illustration and want to purchase a print, they are now available in my online store - all proceeds will go towards the conservation of pangolins. To check it out just click here:

Here’s a two page spread I did recently for one of my favorite magazines, Teaching Tolerance. The story is about a class election that pretty much parallels the political divide that resulted from our recent presidential election, only one side wants an aquarium for the classroom and the other side is looking to get all the nachos they can eat. Hopefully we’ll learn how to eventually work with each other much like the students do in this story.
Big thanks goes out to the incredible Valerie Downes for letting me throw some soggy nachos into the mix! To read the full story you can go here:

Guess who finally watched the Yo Kai Watch Movie? This guy - thanks Netflix! Anyway, it’s been a while now since I did the illustrations for the Yo Kai Watch TCG and couldn’t resist jumping back into that world, especially after seeing Nathaniel and Hovernyan in action. This one is totally just for myself (and Yo Kai Fans of course), so I decided to go big with it and created this image as an epic 16x24 inch poster, with prints available in my online store!

It’s always great when I get to work with Penn Arts and Sciences, but this time around I was lucky enough to illustrate the feature article in their latest issue of OMNIA Magazine. The topic was on using big data to help with various societal problems like improving the tools available to the judicial system when it comes to sentencing or parole hearings.
Above is the cover, 2 page spread (with details of each page), and the half page illustration that accompanied the story. To read more about this fascinating subject just click here: http://omnia.sas.upenn.edu/story/data-oracle
Big heartfelt high-five goes out to the super talented Matthew Leake!

Full page and spot illustration I did for the Fall 2016 issue of Baylor Magazine on the topic of Christianity and politics. As this daunting election season comes to a close should Christians who are tired of our political system even care about who runs the country? Spoiler alert: the answer is “Yes”.
As always, a big thank you goes out to Randy Morrison and the Baylor crew!

I carved my first fun-kin over the weekend! With all of the Yo Kai Watch excitement going on this Fall I couldn’t resist making a Jibanyan jack-o-lantern, which seems very appropriate considering his insatiable love of chocolate. Now I just have to put up the rest of my halloween decorations ...

Here’s a new illustration I did for this weeks issue of Time Magazine! The article is about how states like California are trying to remedy the fact that many small businesses still don’t offer their employees any kind of retirement plan.
Many thanks to the amazing Andree Kahlmorgan for the great direction and allowing me to get away with working a fairytale scenario into the concept!

Recent one for Smithsonian Magazine about the fragile state of the Woodrat species in Florida, and how it’s main threat is the common domesticated house cat. Big thanks to the amazing Heather Palmateer for supplying a great article as well as another opportunity for me to draw some cute fuzzy creatures!

I’m so honored to be a part of this really cool project. Every Fall, the Illustration Department at the University of the Arts puts together a postcard mailer that showcases some of the incredible artwork that our senior students generate throughout their final year in the program, and each year a new faculty member is asked to create the face card for this set. Well, I’m excited to announce that this time around I had the opportunity to represent the tremendously talented class of 2016!
The theme of the front card is “UArts as icon, past, present, future”, which leaves the concept pretty wide open, and so I chose to depict the University of the Arts logo as the iconic Aurora Borealis. Below the main image you can see how the card looks printed and packaged as well as just a few samples of the stunning student work that you will find inside.
This upcoming Spring semester will actually be my 10th year as a member of the University of the Arts Illustration faculty, and I don’t know if I can find the words to express how very proud I am to be a part of such an amazing program and school. For any aspiring illustrator this place is an embarrassment of riches, and the icing on the cake is that these UArts students are simply AWESOME! Speaking of which, here are the names behind the card images pictured in this post (clockwise from the top left):
Natalia Jablonski, Kailey Whitman, Jordan Witt, Hannah Gregory, James Firnhaber, Bill Doyle, and Jackie Kluge
