Arteta: “What I can say from my side is that it is just a football decision. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other.

"Obviously a player of that dimension, with the career he has had, everything that happens around him has a big impact. It has been the case for the last eight years, it is nothing new that is just happening now. A lot of things have happened over these eight years.

"My job is to get the best out of every player, to contribute to the team performance.

"Here I feel at the moment, today, that I have failed. I want the best possible Mesut for the team. And in some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad.”

OK, look, I put my hands up and admit Ozil is not the player he once was, and there is fair criticism of his attitude and use of social media against his club/managers. But this statement is such fucking garbage.

1. If it is “just a football decision” then why are you saying “a lot of things happened over these last eight years”. If it is about football, then it is about how he plays now, not how he played before.  Honestly, how he played before was at times very good. But if his football is not good enough right now, then don’t talk about the last eight years because that has nothing to do with it.  Even say you are building in a new direction away form him, perfectly defendable! But by saying it was “nothing new” and has been ‘happening over the last 8 years’ we know it isn’t actually about football.  It is about something else.

2. Saying he ‘has failed’ to get the best Mesut because he has to make the decision to leave him out is illogical. It should be he left him out of the squad because he failed to get the best out of Mesut. That would be perfectly reasonable. But he says the opposite.  It is clear Arteta has failed Mesut, and that can’t be controversial because it is so by his own admission! But he also admits that he ‘had to make the decision to leave him out’.  While that is partly because there is a deadline, and a decision has to be made, but it is pretty obvious that it wasn’t a footballing decision, that it has been an ongoing issue, and that Arteta didn’t make the decision. Someone else did.

I will give Arteta some credit, it is his first time managing a club, and he obviously wants this job.  He also didn’t create the schism between Ozil and the Club. For all we know he tried to mediate. But I am certain this statement is utter shite.
