NEW ESSAY: "The Cass Review, WPATH Files, and the Perpetual Debate over Gender-Affirming Care." It discusses flaws in the Cass report, while also making sense of these debates over trans youth & GAC more generally. I show that this is not a debate about "the science" per se, but about whether we strive to minimize harm (via gender-affirmative model) or whether we harm trans people in the name of prioritizing cisnormativity. No paywall, please give it lots of "claps"!

In the last few years, "gender critical" activists have gone down a bizarre "gamete" rabbit hole, portraying these microscopic haploid cells as the be-all & end-all of sex. my new essay interrogates the science behind these claims. The conclusion: "gametes are actually a part of natural variation and sex diversity, rather than the antithesis of it". Please like & share! (no-paywall link)

This video grew out of a talk I've given at colleges and conferences in the past, but I fleshed it out further to not only address most anti-trans talking points about "biological sex," but to address recurring intra-community debates about who is "really trans" or whether there are "different types" of trans people.
If it's a little on the long side for you, it is split up into "chapters" on the YouTube description page, so you can watch it in segments or jump ahead to subtopics that interest you. Here are those time stamps:
0:00 Intro, 4:57 Seeing Sex & Gender, 8:43 Essentialism, 13:34 The Sex/Gender Distinction, 14:35 Homogenizing vs Holistic Views of Sex, Gender, and Sexuality, 15:59 Sex Is Multifaceted (a collection of sexually dimorphic traits), 16:45 Sex Is Variable (due to complex traits), 20:44 Sex Is Somewhat Malleable, 21:41 What Does "Sex Is Socially Constructed" Mean?, 24:54 The "Gender Critical" Gamete Gambit, 26:22 Does "Brain Sex" Exist? (& why the sex/gender distinction fails), 29:54 Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sexual Orientation, 48:28 "Brain Sex" Revisited, 54:00 Outro

I'm happy to announce that a 3rd edition of my first book Whipping Girl will be coming out this March — you can pre-order it here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/julia-serano/whipping-girl/9781541604520/
The embedded link at the top of this post will take you to a short piece (5 minute read) about the new edition. Here's the TL;DR: It's basically the same book as before, but with a new Afterword on trans youth and moral panics (aka, responding to the current anti-trans backlash). It also has a new cover — I describe the thinking process behind the cover in the piece as well. So please be sure to check it out!

I was finally compelled to write: On “Male Socialization” and the “Trans Masc Versus Trans Fem” Discourse. In addition to critiquing the way that "socialization" is often wielded against trans women & transfeminine people, I (very carefully) wade into intra-trans-community online debates of late. I hope that everyone on all sides of the issue can get something out of it (even if you don't 100% agree). This link is for Medium, but you can also find it on Substack, both no-paywall. You can follow my work on either platform. Please share far and wide!

So I was provoked into writing a response to the ridiculous "What Is a Woman?" question. Here's a pertinent excerpt:
“What is a woman?” is not intended to be a question. It’s a slogan created and championed by UK “gender critical” activists who strongly oppose the social and legal recognition of trans people, with some even calling for eliminationist measures that would morally mandate us out of existence. Whenever gender-critical activists pose the “what is a woman?” question to politicians, organizations, celebrities, etc. (as they are wont to do), they are not looking to start a nuanced discussion or debate. Rather, they want a yes-or-no answer to their real question, the only question that counts in their minds: Will you support our anti-trans beliefs, policies, and legislation?

I just wrote about KOSA: A Nationwide Anti-Trans/LGBTQ+ Bill in All but Name. The piece has everything you need to know, plus how to contact your congresspeople about it. It's short, a mere 4 minute read.
The link above is from my new Substack, which you can subscribe to for free if you wish.
I will continue to cross-post everything to my Medium account, so you can still to follow me there if you prefer. Here's a "friend link" to that version: https://juliaserano.medium.com/kosa-a-nationwide-anti-trans-lgbtq-bill-in-all-but-name-d6d9f8b8ec6c?sk=0bfad95c1ed6da0a82cd67bef8659ce1
Either way, please share my KOSA post far and wide to ensure that this poorly written (and LGBTQ+ threatening) bill does not pass!

last night I watched "The Core," which is yet another disaster movie that goes out of its way to destroy San Francisco! I've long had a theory of why this is (passage from my novel 99 Erics: a Kat Cataclysm faux novel)...
