It's not exactly a "redraw" thing that I originally wanted to do, but definitely it's in spirit of a pic I also posted post-holidays season in 2018 :'D

The urge to draw one of my OTPs like this was 😩... but then I fumbled and procrastinated in finishing it.

I had this idea of redrawing a screencap from quite a while. There was a Vapowave compilation video that appeared on my YT reccomendations which thumbnail caught my attention just because of its somewhat silly premise (it was from a 80s or very-very early 90s commercial for beverages or bubblegum... wish I knew which it was since I don't have the link of the video on question in my hands, lol).

Silly concept of a couple on what it seems like a boat in the middle of a summery day = why not trying it on Mage and Ritsuka? It's been a long while since I last drew them too, hahah.

Just a drawing exercise trying to understand some anatomy (and I reworked details on this after a while because I wasn't convinced on the first version of this pic's linearts... Even though I know some things are still a little off, OTL).

I also made a noise-filled edit that makes it look like coming from an old TV screencap from a VHS, but I will be real in saying that I'm not fully convinced on how it came out, lol. This edit and the original commercial screencap I used as base are under the Keep Reading cut~

I know it’s not perfect, and I don’t want to worry about that... To be fair, it’s been also a long time that I haven’t drawn anything with my tablet due to same silly worries about laptop and what not, and other stuff I have on mind that I take as priorities (also about having a sketch on pencil and paper rather than doing it directly on the Intuos because my results get mixed, lol).

So, anyway. Thinking about her (and Switch, cuz sometimes they come in package whenever I think of one or the other).

(I admit it’s not 100% related to halloween per se, just a fun and silly au idea for my characters :’) )

This is the sketch for a fully look of Riley’s design as a thief in the pirate au thing.

First of all, I’m sorry if he looks a little... off 😩 . Maybe since this is just a sketch, I’m a little forgiving myself on details (he is chubbier here and he is tall, so), and might do a better job later on.

Basically, I wanted to make his thief outfit less elaborated than Ellie’s pirate outfit. but I also take a few curfews from my fave Fire Emblem boi, Saber (from Shadows of Valentia).

What I often consider when drawing Riley is that he tends to like t-shirts, and short-sleeved shirts in general, and he often rolls up his shirts, sweaters, jackets and so on, especially if it’s hot. So I wanted to incorporate it here. He is using a very basic long sleeved shirt, below a leather vest (I kid you not when I say “lots of leather” in my designs for this au) that acentuates his chub (he doesn’t mind... entirely? but what else can you do about that), and a piece of cloth around his waist.

His pants are also pretty basic, and he always uses boots.

He also uses a shoulderpad on his left shoulder. The reason he uses it is more symbolic than anything because he was attacked by a werewolf that forced him to transform into one (nod to how he became a werewolf in my wau), and the scar that it left him can still hurt at times (it is his weak spot, basically).

He uses a bandanna over his head with a few beads on it, and he uses it because his hair gets long fairly quickly and he usually hates stylizing it (also, it gets quite hot when he and his crew wanders from one place to another). For other accesories, he uses earrings, necklaces (he usually puts rings on them), bead bracelets and often is seen using a bandage on his wrist.

Not seen here, but for weapons he prefers to use daggers (he has two). He is fast, but since his lycanthropy happened, he is more agile and flexible than he used to be.

Compared to main universe Riley, he has eye bags (this is the factor that led me to raise his ane Ellie’s age by 5 years each in this au), use longer hair, and his beard, while subtle, it is not a mere goatee or stubble anymore. He has a scar on his right cheek that was actually from his first sword fight with Ellie.

Ellie’s pirate design

I’ll start off with sketches I did when imagining this pirate AU idea, although Ellie is the main protagonist of this page in particular.

(Also, ignore obvious super-deformed blobs up there in the top of the page, one being Santiago, with his wavy hair, earrings, and glasses; and the other being an unknown character with obvious stubble and sunglasses that I’m still defining his design... and my handwriting in Spanish, I suppose?)

When thinking of the au in general, all I could think of at first is pirates and thieves wearing lots of leather, in some way or another, lol.

Ellie in particular was going to get a more “mainstream” outfit, but decided to go with this: a long leather jacket that is worn-out, a piece of cloth around her waist, and under all of this, she would be wearing a blouse, pants, and long-thigh leather boots with some heel to make her a little taller.

She wears jewelry in general: a pair of earrings that are more complementary than identical, rings in both of her hands and necklaces. She wears three: beads, a seashell, and a wind rose-kind of compass (I don’t put it expicitly here, but I refer to it as “a family jewel”).

Compared to her main universe design, she wears long hair up her shoulders (not a bob, and more wavy and fluffy). She also has a scar on her face, as I kinda wanted to make her “tough” but didn’t want to reccur to an eyepatch (although I considered it, hence why her bangs, at least here, cover her left eye).

Her weapons of preference are an old sword and pistols, I think (and funnily enough, I was thinking of her using cannonballs as if they were volleyballs, who knows, I might adapt this later on, lol).

Some more elements in this sketch page: I incorporated the initial sketches for Riley’s look, and I started, obviously, with his head, which also led me to define this version of their characters as a little bit more older than their original counterparts. Lol. (also, I’m pretty bad with scale sometimes, so my sketches turn up a little messy). I want to spotlight them on his own piece of page, though, but what I REALLY want to highlight here is that I wanted him to be a werewolf in this au, because, of course. Either he is the only werewolf in his crew (and mostly part of the reason they succeed and/are considered a menace) or his entire crew can also transform into them (with few exceptions). Still defining if he transforms into full beast, something more in-between, or more anthromorphic.

(That’s also why I sketched his left hand while thinking about him using rings on his hands or nah).

Riley’s thief design

This year I don’t have much to present for halloween, except perhaps this silly idea of an AU for AU that is based on pirates? Lol.

I dunno why, but blame the fact that early this month (or late September, I barely remember at this point, xP) I watched a S.Korean movie that I enjoyed a LOT that basically is where I got this whole idea in the first place. And it got me thinking from then on.

Ellie is a pirate (self-called “Queen of Pirates”), and Riley is a thief (”the best thief on many X lands”). They have a little of ego issues clashes between them ever since they meet (you are both thieves, lmao, don’t fight and just kiss) and can’t stand each other that much (until they are forced to work together). 

Compared to my main universe timeline, they are 30 and 32 years old respectively, instead of 25 and 27. Which might be some kind of cop-out from myself, because...

This is the perfect setup for a “cosplay couple” idea that main universe Ellie miiight (totally could) do for a costume party thing in 2022, lol. Talk about mixing AU ideas for main universe stuff, lol. Still, it is a legit AU idea I had, where my kids are antagonistic for a while... until the kisses start to happen 😘😘

Kiiinda planned this to do some months ago, but couldn’t properly work on it until early this August. I might not have understood the homework at 100%, lol, but I suppose I went to give it my own spin? while also playing with a very limited color palette. It was quite fun, tbh, and I think I attempted to get out of my usual comfort zone when doing digital pieces.

A few months ago I was looking through my dashboard and got inspired and VERY tempted to think about and draw possible future versions of these two. Even more considering that by this past June, it has been 5 years since that day that inspired me in creating them!

Fun thing, however, is that I don’t have a very set future for them or AU in general. Perhaps just the first two years of what I consider “main canon”, and onwards it gets hazy, lol. ALTHOUGH, I do think of Ellie and Riley’s relationship going stronger as time goes by, and them eventually getting married and having a child (!)... but I don’t think I would touch onto that in the main-canon as such, lol?

The original idea I had was doing “redesigns” of how they would look like in 5 years? But, somehow I ended up here... showing how they might look like in 15 years :)

Riley here is 42 and Ellie is 40. They’ve been married for 7 years, and have a kid who is ~5 years old at this point. This is as much as vague I will reveal(?) right now 😂.

The reason I don’t think they could change too much, yet they kinda would do, is because adulthood is just like that *shrugs*. Besides... BESIDES, I do dig Riley getting a little chonkier when he gets older + becomes a dad 👀, and thinking in him having more of a dad bod in his late 30s/early 40s (more leaning into muscle chub, however?) because it’s something he deserves 😤.

Everything became a mess, yet I still want to see you once more.

Once upon a time, like... 4-ish years ago (2017), I did a pic of angsty full Mage for a potential aftermath of one of his game bad endings (because, iirc, he didn’t have an aftermath cg?), and here I am retaking this idea plus another one that came from a ship ask for MeiRitsu, also from around the same time (a post-apocalyptic idea-kind of question?) because I am trying to work out a couple of ideas for different future!Mage (angsty and positive good future-like ideas, lol).

In basic concepts, all I wanted for this specific angsty Mage is the idea of a deteriorated, full-on powered individual. 

Tired, with no more options other than pushing (himself) forward at any cost. He lost part of his right arm in a previous incident, yet replaced it with a monster’s (his own? alternate(?) form). His skin is looking every passing day more and more gaunt (and he has a stubble, because why not), as they are part of the after effects of grabbing so much power and becoming a destructive demon, whose best (and happier) days are long way behind (also, thanks to sadness and wrath and regrets 24/7, because he lost the true love of his life and he is 100% alone those days). 

The hair is the part I’m still not so sure about. I have considered giving him loose long hair that is all messy (as I did time ago in that one pic... or in a more normal stylized way as per canon... but I also thought of this other alternative which I think it’s much more better:

“Long hair” doesn’t work in a battlefield, 24/7, you know? Although I know he loses his distinctive long and beautiful blond hair, but angst, wrath, and regrets do different things to you after a certain period of time.

Summer feeling w/ Riley and Ellie  ⛱️

Still a little early for summer this year, yet it does feel like summer is here with heats of 40-45°C (!) at least in my city :’D

Wonder how summer is probably going to be for these two (probably it will involve an AC at their respective places, or electric fans in the resting room of the motorcycle repair shop where Riley works at) because the heat might get unbearable 😩.

Testing different expressions in some sort of age timeline for the AU cast (and Valentino is absent because space and I’m still fully figuring out how to draw him at a younger age). 

I wanted to focus in ages 10, 13, 17, and 23 (so, at that “age 23″ point, Ellie and Carla are more closer to it because it’s quite less than 2 years before current events in AU... while Riley and Santiago are 4 years older and "wiser”, although that last statement miiight be a bit of a stretch?, but barely look THAT different).

This was also one of those moments where I feel like I forgot how to draw, because some of the sketches look kinda weird to me 😩 .

So... Riley and Ellie’s younger designs are the ones I already had on mind and figured them out much more earlier than the others. My favorite versions of them (besides their adult selves) are still their teens’ version. Like... drawing Riley with longer hair (his hair grows fast) with a headband because of his bangs... or Ellie wearing longer hair when she was in middle school, were the very first things I thought about them as teens, lol.

Then, there were Santiago and Carla, since I had very vague ideas of what to do with them. Santiago, given his curly hair and the fact he wears it longer as an adult, made me think of how he might have looked younger... besides, what a cutie :’) (and later I decided to give him acne as a pre-teen cause why not  😭). It’s very obvious he and his bestie got their respective “glow ups” when high school happened, lol.

Carla, on the other hand, I always had this silly idea of her being the typical girl who always got good grades on Elementary School, but somehow, somehow, started to rebel at the tender age of 13 (when she was vaguely knowing what to do - hence the black nails) and she couldn’t stop there (and she remained a very smart girl with good grades... but she had that “edge” of spice, you know?)

At this point I’m not sure if I will draw all of them in their younger versions besides obvious main OCs, and their respective times when they met their respective long time friends... but I guess it’s my guide about them looking like this?

🌼🌷 Victoria and Leticia 🌷 🌼

I dunno why, but I somehow got the idea of doing a pic related to Mother’s Day (we celebrate it on May 10th), and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce Riley’s and Ellie’s moms, lol. I think it’s kinda obvious who is whose respective mother, lol.

So, let me introduce them:

Victoria is Riley’s and Laura’s mom, and she is 56 years old. She is divorced (her marriage started okay but degraded with the passage of time) and she raised her children as a single mother… and it wasn’t a simple walk through a field of flowers. It was mostly her maintaining her kids on her own, although she received some help from the kids’ grandmother and her own siblings. At times, however, she feels somewhat guilty she couldn’t be there 24/7 for them because she was busy in bringing food to the table and give them many of their commodities.

That being said, she is still proud about them and how she raised them, despite the trouble they might have brought considering growing pains and other stuff, because both Laura and Riley became (mostly) functional adults and good people overall.

She is currently working at a community center in an area close to where she lives. She prefers to keep herself active as she doesn’t want to feel old at her age (and yes, she dies her hair of a lighter color, and while she might have grey hairs, she still remains somewhat “younger” than she seems). Her character is somewhat playful, pampering, but she is still a mom (and can be a little cringey, ngl, lol).

Although I KNOW beauty marks are not… genetically hereditary, I guess?, it’s a physical characteristic on Riley and his close family.

Leticia is Ellie’s mom. She is 52, and is happily married. She is from a humble family (compared to her husband’s, who are richer and can be quite “overwhelming”). Her marriage has always been on equal and balanced grounds, and earlier at Ellie’s childhood, she decided to stay at home while her husband was putting an attorney at law’s firm and sustaining them on a stable financial status.

She is quite close to Ellie and has been closely tied to her activities, especially at school, since she was part of many of her basic education grades’ groups’ parents associations. These groups always had its downs, since most of them have other moms gossiping about other kids and their parents (she didn’t like this aspect, tbh, since she might have heard about one or two things concerning Ellie and her weight, because... you know).

She always has been supportive and encouraging Ellie’s activities and hobbies, despite knowing it would be a little difficult on her given her weight and what not, and while she had good intentions, she always encourager her to be physically active, despite it didn’t help her to lose weight.

Leaving Ellie���s basic education days (and her involvement in parents’ associations, lol) behind, she invested in a “fonda”-like restaurant business where she would be in charge of cooking classic Mexican comida corrida dishes, and it’s still the thing she currently dedicates to these days.

Leticia is graceful, but can put a good scolding, and sometimes she worries more than she should. She can be a little overprotective (but not as much as her husband, lol).

It’s quite obvious that Ellie looks a LOT like her, but. Design wise, what I had on mind was “the mom would be taller (she is 1.70-ish m) than her husband and daughter, and she is essentially how Ellie would probably look like if ‘tall, slimmer, and older’.” In a way, some of Ellie’s prominent curves are hereditary from her side (not pictured here, she has nice hips, lmao), lol. Similar to Vicky, she also takes care of her image and likes looking a little younger than she actually is.
