Knowing the Signs
Sixteen Candles Drabble
Request: In sixteen candles, from one mom to another. Gina says that eventually, she got Bunny to admit to Mike's abuse. Could we please have a little drabble about the conversation between Gina and Bunny if you're up to it? No pressure 💛
Trigger Warning - physical and emotional abuse
Bunny isn't a jealous person. It's simply not in her DNA. She's always been taught to be thankful for what she has and she's always taken it to heart. She has a roof over her head. Food to eat. Clothes on her back. The necessities. The bare minimum. She should be happy with that, right? It's what God has provided for her and she shouldn't beg for more. Even when the more is basic love and care. Sometimes she feels guilty for wanting things she doesn't have.
She's sitting here at Riley's kitchen counter, with Riley, and her mom Gina and she yearns for more. For the better part of a half-hour, Riley and Gina have been cooking dinner. Bunny comes several nights a week to join in on the fun. Usually, she sits and watches. She feels a bit awkward. Like she's intruding on a very private moment between mother and daughter. They laugh, joke, and talk. Bunny listens. Riley tells her mom everything. About the girl she likes (totally not jealous of that). About basketball. About her grades. Riley can tell her mom everything without fear of consequences.
Bunny sits with her hands in her hands, a downturned expression on her face, and a sunken heart. When would she have that? Could she have that? Technically she has a mom. One that isn't interested in her or anything she does but she has one. Some people don't even have that.
Is it too much to ask for someone to hold her? Or laugh with her? Read to her? She guesses the last request may be a bit childish but she still wants it. She's nearing thirteen and it's the most important time in her life. She's figuring so many things out by herself she can't even keep tabs on them. Like how you're not supposed to put so much hair gel in your hair or else it will feel like a helmet at the end of the day. Or you're supposed to wear a bra with that shirt. Silly things like that - Riley doesn't have to worry about it. She has someone there with her 24/7. Which is why Bunny never vents to her. She's afraid if she says too much Riley will get tired of hearing her complain.
"You should be grateful," She would probably say. It's what everyone says. So, Bunny keeps her feelings to herself. She writes in her journal. She tells it to her teddy bear. Sometimes she even prays to God as a last resort but she never says anything else.
"Y/n, why don't you come over here and help?" Gina beckons her over. She notices the girl's somber mood. It's become a common occurrence and Gina is becoming concerned. Bunny sits up straighter, glancing over to the clock before she shakes her head.
"I should probably go home," Bunny says, gathering her books, and her backpack to go over her shoulder.
"Oh, is Sherry cooking tonight?" Gina wonders. Something on Riley's face says the opposite. "What?"
"It's nothing," Bunny interrupts before Riley can tell too much. "I cook for myself sometimes. It's how I've been learning."
"How often is sometimes?" Gina is suspicious. She has been for a while. There are too many red flags for her to not ask. It's been a constant ball dropping from Bunny's parents that she's not okay with.
"Most nights," Bunny shrugs. She grips her backpack a little tighter. "Mama cooks sometimes. When she's home. Then Mike thinks it's important I learn to cook too."
"Does he think it's important that your stepbrother learn too?"
"Well, yeah but he doesn't really enforce it," Bunny answers easily.
Gina nods. She walks over to the fridge, opens it, looking inside for something that neither of the girls knows. She takes out plastic Tupperware that's filled with leftovers.
"Here's some more of the lasagna I made last night," Gina passes the bowl to Bunny. "This should get you through a few nights. It's all for you. No sharing. Got it?"
"Got it," Bunny smiles brightly. "Your cooking is always so good, Ms. Gina."
"The best," Riley agrees.
"Well, I'm happy you girls agree," Gina returns to the pot to stir her homemade spaghetti sauce. "Now, are you sure you don't want to stay? I can tell them you're spending the night."
Bunny wants to badly. As much as she wants to say yes, she knows they won't approve. Ever since her mom and Mike have gotten married he's been vocal about his dislike for Bunny's freedom.
"She's allowed to do too much," He would rant. "It's not proper for a young girl to never be home." He'd say.
Bunny would secretly roll her eyes at the man. Who did he think he was? He wasn't her dad. Certainly not her stepdad. All he was to her is a roommate. He sure acted like one. Bunny thought stepparents were supposed to try and woo the kids. Win them over before they started their reign of terror. He didn't. Mike went straight to be Dr. Evil himself and Bunny hated him for it.
"I'll walk you out," Rilley offers and Bunny nods. Gina gives a small wave, not too convinced that the little girl is alright, as the girls walk to the front door.
"You can tell her," Riley begins and Bunny looks at her with a furrowed brow. "About stuff."
"She's your mom," Bunny begins. "Won't you be mad I'm trying to take her from you or something?"
"Nah," Riley dismisses. "She's really cool about things and she really likes you. You can tell her about Mike."
"Why? It's not like anything will happen," Bunny reaches for the door knob. "He's my new parent and everything." She says. "Nothing new."
Riley wants to say more. "If you're sure." Riley frowns.
"I'm sure," Bunny shoots back. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"See you tomorrow," Riley waits for her to open the front door. Bunny walks all the way to the end of the pathway and turns back to smile at Riley before she walks a couple of blocks to her house.
********
When Bunny enters her home there's a shift in her mood. The happy, serene feeling of freedom was overtaken by something else entirely. She's on high alert as she spots Mike on the living room couch nursing a beer.
"Hi, Mike," Bunny greets. Only because she'll be in trouble if she doesn't. "Is Mama home?"
"She should be soon," He gruffs. "What you got there?"He gestures to the Tupperware in her arms.
"Food from Ms. Gina," Bunny says. She walks toward the kitchen to heat some up for herself. She goes through the process of preparing it, putting it in the microwave, and standing next to the machine to wait for the timer. In the reflection, she notices David and his friends enter.
"Ohh, is this for us?" David rubs his hands together like he's just struck gold. "Who's is this?"
"It's mine," Bunny says quietly.
"Oh yeah," David takes that as his go-ahead to dig in. He begins to cut himself a piece of lasagna before passing the knife to his friends.
"No, that's for me," She begins to protest. She didn't mind sharing with him but his friends were not on that list.
"What? You have all of this here?" David argues.
"I know but," Bunny begins "Ms. Gina made it for me to have food for the next few days."
"We have food here," David rolls his eyes.
"What I can't get some of your lasagnas?" Chuck, David's oldest friend feigns offense.
"No, "Bunny snatches the plate away from the boys.
"Hey that's so selfish of you," David shakes his head.
"What's going on in there?" Mike calls from the kitchen. The sound of his chair creaking indicates his arrival. He steps into the kitchen with a frown on his face.
"Y/n won't share her food with us and she has so much," David points to the plate.
"That's fine you don't have to eat her food," Mike shakes his head. "Just don't share with her when you have something. She was raised to be selfish. Here go to the store for me." He hands David a twenty-dollar bill.
"I can keep the change?"
Mike waves him off.
"Thanks, pops," David leads his friends out of the kitchen. This leaves Bunny and Mike all alone.
"You're going to learn quickly being selfish doesn't get you anything," Mike takes a swig of his beer. "Especially not around here. I don't play that. You brought food in here you bring some for everybody."
Bunny wants to point out there have been several times David has brought things home and not shared them with her. Instead, she remains silent. She turns back toward the microwave.
"Do you hear me?" Mike demands from her.
"Yes," She says quietly. Too quiet apparently.
"You have an attitude," Mike questions. "Look at me when I'm talking to you."
"No, could you just leave me alone ?" Bunny finds herself blurting out. Her eyes widen and he's across the room before either of them has time to react. He slaps her with the back of his hand, her face whipping in the other direction, and tears fill her eyes.
"Don't you ever talk to me like that again," He demands. "Every time you come back from that place you have an attitude. I don't know what they tell you over there but it's not going to happen here. I'm not raising disrespectful kids. Do you hear me?"
Bunny takes a moment, partly because she can't breathe, and the other part because she wants to cry. She nods though. With everything she hopes he just leaves her alone. There's a moment of silence. He simply looks at her. Then he sighs.
"Clean up my kitchen and go to bed," He instructs. He doesn't say anything further. He shuffles out of the kitchen with the beer in his hand. The microwave timer goes off but this time she's not as hungry. Bunny sniffles, still feeling the burn of his hand on her face, and she moves over to the sink. She gathers all of the dishes, cleans the counters, and makes sure everything is in its place. She turns off the kitchen lights and retreats to her bedroom.
Maybe tomorrow will be better.
**********************
Bunny arrives at Riley's house the same way she does every day. She knocks on the door and waits patiently for someone to answer. To her surprise, it's Gina. She opens the door with a gentle smile.
"Hey, y/n, Riley's not here," Gina greets. She holds the screen door open for the teen to come inside. "She went with her cousin to a basketball game."
"Oh, I guess I'll come back tomorrow then," Bunny fiddles with her fingers. Gina can see in her entire demeanor she doesn't want to go home.
"How about some ice cream?" Gina suggests. Bunny brightens at this. Together they walk towards the kitchen and she spots Riley's jersey on the kitchen table along with a sewing kit and other materials. "Don't mind the mess. I am fixing up Riley's uniform. "
"She told me she ripped it earlier," Bunny nods. She stands at the counter, unsure of what to do, and Gina looks at her with a laugh.
"You know where everything is. Grab the spoons," Gina points to the silverware drawer. Bunny springs into action and grabs two spoons, two bowls, and napkins. Gina offers her three scoops of vanilla ice cream and makes one for herself. "I hope you like Vanilla. Riley has been eating me out of a house and home so we're out of the others."
"I like it," Bunny responds. She takes a scoop of her ice cream and cringes. It's really cold on her teeth. Gina takes note of her expressions. "Sorry, my teeth are just a little sensitive." Bunny excuses.
"Do they hurt ?" The older woman inquires.
"Not really, only sometimes," Bunny takes a more careful spoonful this time. She eats tentatively this time unaware that Gina is analyzing her.
"What happened to your lip?" Gina tilts her head. Bunny's eyes flash up to hers. Gina steps over to her, gently holding her chin, and turning her head towards her.
"It's nothing," Bunny excuses. "I bit it or something." She's not a good liar. She can't come up with something so easily. She's never had to. People don't pay attention to her enough to ask questions.
"Hmm," Gina hums. "Are you telling me the truth?"
Bunny nods silently. She tears her chin away from Gina's grip to return to eating her ice cream. Gina doesn't move. She actually debates with herself on bringing it up.
"Y/n," Gina begins and the teen looks over at her. "Mike is good to you, right? He's kind?"
"I mean," Bunny shrugs. "He's alright. He's not always nice but he isn't mad. He treats my mom nicely."
"But you?" Gina prompts.
"He's good," Bunny shakes her head. "I think I'm just going to go home." Bunny pushes her bowl away. Gina seems a bit disappointed and so Bunny doesn't move. She sits with guilt. "I'm sorry, Ms. Gina. I don't have anything to say."
"It's okay, baby, I just want you to be safe and healthy," She rubs her back. "You know, Riley told me something, you don't have to tell me everything. I just want to know if he's still spanking you? Does he hit you?"
"She told you that?" Bunny frowns. "I told her not to."
"Don't be angry with her. She's worried," Gina says. "I'm worried."
"I deserve it," Bunny's voice is almost robotic in tone. As if she's repeating words that aren't her own. "I keep doing bad things and making mistakes."
"No mistake warrants a busted lip," Gina remains calm. Even if she feels rage and sadness. "So he has been hitting you?"
"Yeah," Bunny confesses quietly. "Don't tell anyone, please? My mom would be in trouble. I don't have anyone else."
"You have me," Gina promises her. "You have Riley. I'm always here for you."
"Thanks," Bunny's voice wavers. She's uncomfortable now. She sits for a few seconds longer before the waterworks begin. Her vision blurs. She hopes to keep the tears at bay but she can't. When Gina opens her arms for her to fall into them she doesn't hesitate. In fact, she melts in her arms. There she cries for the first time in a while. She's more embarrassed than she is scared. She's twelve and she's still getting in trouble for things.
Gina is the adult in the situation. She's not sure what to do here. She knows she has to get this baby some help. She understands right now as a mandated reporter she needs to do something even if she isn't on the clock. There's a little girl that has grown up with her daughter. She's watched Bunny grow and she doesn't like the changes she's seeing. She offers several kisses to Bunny's forehead.
"I don't want to go back home tonight," Bunny sits up after a few minutes of crying. Fat tears slip from her face and she doesn't attempt to wipe them away. She doesn't want to go back home at all. She wishes Gina could be her mom. She wishes her bedroom upstairs, the one they tote as a guest room which is really hers is waiting for her.
"You're staying here," Gina assures her. "We could have a girl's night just the two of us. Until Riley comes home. I'll tell Sherry you're staying. She won't say no to me." Gina shakes her head. "You don't worry about anything. Let me worry about what she'll say."
"I wish you could be my mom too," Bunny whispers. "Riley is really lucky to have you." She mumbles. Her cheeks heat in embarrassment. She's not supposed to say things like that. Though Gina's reaction is one of love. She opens her arms and offers her another hug.
That same night, when the girls are in bed, Gina debates with herself what her next steps should be. She wants nothing more than to give Sherry and Mike a piece of her mind. In just a few years she's watched a lively energetic girl turn into a shell of herself. She couldn't just sit and say nothing.

Which family dynamic would be the best? (Natasha Romanoff)
Alexei & Melina (Y/n's parents)
Natasha Romanoff (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Sarah Cameron (Y/n's adoptive sister)
JJ Maybank (Y/n's adoptive brother)
Yelena Belova (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Y/n Romanoff
Wheezie Cameron (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Rose Shostakov (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Alina Vostokoff (Y/n's adoptive sister)
OR
Melina & Alexei (Y/n's Grandparents)
Natasha & Wanda (Y/n's parents)
Sarah Romanoff (Cameron) (Y/n's adoptive sister)
JJ Maximoff (Maybank) (Y/n's adoptive brother)
Yelena Belova (Y/n's Auntie)
Y/n Romanoff-Maximoff
Wheezie Maximoff (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Rose Romanoff-Maximoff (Y/n's adoptive sister)
Alina Romanoff (Y/n's adoptive sister)
OR
Scarlett Johansson & Whatever Partner (Y/n's Parents)
Sarah Cameron (Y/n's sister)
JJ Maybank (Y/n's brother)
Yelena Belova (Y/n's sister)
Y/n Y/l/n
Wheezie Cameron (Y/n's sister)
Rose Johansson (Y/n's sister)
Alina Johansson (Y/n's sister)
What do you think about these dynamics? Are there any other ones you would prefer?
*now that I think about it there are so many different possibilities for these family dynamics like in the Scarlett Johansson dynamic there are different possibilities of who she could be with as well as the Natasha Romanoff dynamic. There's also who lives together because with the Melina & Alexei dynamic they aren't really married so some kids might live with Melina and some might live with Alexei (pretty sure Y/n refuses to live with either of them and decides to live with Nat.)

"There's a man in her bed"
(Y/n finds out about her mum's new boyfriend and is not happy about it.)
Y/N - 16
Rose - 7
Reader POV:
"Y/n.. y/n wake up!" My little sister Rose shouts. I grumble and roll over "noo please y/n I need your help" with Rose's tone of voice I open my eyes and see the concern on her face "what's the matter Rosie?" I ask "I had a nightmare" that sentence makes me frown usually when Rose has a nightmare she would go and sleep in mums room "where's mum?" "She's sleeping" "then what's the problem? Just sneak into bed with her I doubt you'll wake her up" I explain "there's a man in her bed" Rose whispers quieter than before. This is definitely not what I expected to be hearing at 2:00am. "That's okay Rosie hop in" I say as I open the covers for her, she climbs in and snuggles up to me.
It doesn't take too long for Rose to fall asleep so once I know she's asleep I slowly get out of bed and tiptoe down the hall. I open the door to mum's room carefully not knowing what to expect, as Rose said there was a man in the bed. Before I can leave the room again my mum sits up blinking her eyes to wake herself up she looks at me "I can explain y/n it's not what it looks like." I sigh "go back to sleep Mum it's way too early for this conversation".
Scarlett POV:
Y/n said for me to go back to bed but I couldn't stand going back to sleep knowing that she would be overthinking everything. I carefully get out of bed trying not to disturb Colin whose asleep next to me. As I approach y/n's door I hear soft sobs I gently open her door as not to startle her but before I can even see my daughter's face the door gets slammed shut "get out mum I don't want to talk about it" she cries hysterically breathing. "Y/n let me in I can't leave you when you're like this" "FUCK OFF" she screams, great pretty sure everyone's up now and sure enough I hear a tired Rose asking her sister why she's upset and trying to comfort her. "Rosie can you let me in please baby?" "DON'T OPEN THE DOOR GET BACK IN BED" I don't like the way she's yelling at Rose it's way too aggressive and if I didn't know my daughter I would think that she was going to hurt Rose.
Rose POV:
I woke up to Y/n yelling and crying hysterically I was really worried about her so when mummy told me to open the door I walked towards it but Y/n yelled at me and it was really scary so I ran back to bed like she told me to. I'm trying to keep my crying quiet because I don't want to get into trouble again it's my fault that Y/n woke up if I hadn't came into her room she would still be asleep right now although I don't know why she's so angry with mum all she was doing was sleeping.
Scarlett POV:
Y/n is angry but she is also in the middle of a panic attack and all she wants is to be comforted. "Y/n honey I need you to be able to control your breathing if you open the door I can help you." I can hear her short gasps from behind the door which tells me she's still not able to get enough oxygen into her lungs. She opens the door panicked desperately looking into my eyes as if it's going to magically solve the state she's in. I cup her face and make eye contact as she has already done with me. I slowly lay Y/n down on the floor and encourage her to take some deep breaths as I place her and my hand over her heart and hum 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' because we watched 'Sing 2' earlier today as that's Rose's favourite movie at the moment. Eventually Y/n calms down and her breaths are deep but also shuddery. "I'm sorry mama, for swearing an- and and" she stutters "hey let's not think about that right now. Let's cosy up with Rose in bed and talk about this in the morning" she agrees so I carry her over to the bed Rose must be so exhausted because she's passed out like a starfish snoring and all, I place Y/n on the other side of the bed and scoot Rosie over before getting myself situated in the middle of the bed and bringing my girls closer to either side of me.
I wake up before the girls, as I head to my room the scent of bacon fills the house so I go into the kitchen instead. As I enter I notice Colin setting up three plates at the dining table. I go behind him and wrap my arms around his stomach "whatcha doing?" "Making breakfast for you and your girls" he smiles "well what about you?" "I'll have something at home" "you don't have to leave" he gives me a 'really?' look "I think I do" "so you heard?" "Yeah, it'll just make things worse if I'm still here when they wake up. Talk to them over breakfast, we can take this slowly anyway but those girls are your priority so as much as I want to be with you whatever you decide about us I'm sure it's for the best." "Thank you Colin, Y/n will come around I'm sure it may take a while but I promise I have no intention on ending things that easy."
After a couple moments in each others embrace we hear one of my children coming down the stairs so Colin rushes a kiss before heading out the back door. Rose walks in and I'm glad it was her because Y/n would have noticed me closing the door and would know that was the guy sleeping in my bed and it would've caused a massive problem. "FOOD!!!" Rose screams oblivious to anything. I smile and plate up Rose's and my food as I don't know when Y/n would be down or how much she'd want to eat, as I'm finishing up placing my food on the table Y/n walks in zombishly. "Hey sweetheart" my voice going up a few octaves "hey.." she gets her food and shortly we're all sitting at the table. Right now might not be the best time for this conversation but I won't be able to deal with the tension throughout the day if we don't talk right now. "So I want to apologise to you girls. As you know someone spent the night last night and his name is Colin." "He's not our Dad" Y/n bitterly mumbles "no he's not and he's not here to replace him. I like Colin a lot but you girls are my priority. Whenever you both feel ready to meet him I'll introduce you to him properly" I explain "okay mama!" Rose agrees before putting her dishes in the washer and running off to play. "Sorry for how I reacted last night Mum" "It's okay but I need you to apologise to Rose later you really scared her. I'm also sorry you had to find out the way that you did but I hope someday you'll meet Colin and grow to love him" "I'm sure we can meet Colin soon, I'm actually excited about it seeing the way you are so happy when you speak about him. I'm going to apologise to Rosie now." She says and is about to take off running "Wait! I love you" I exclaim "I love you too mama" she says and brings me into her embrace.

TW: Homophobia, Religion bashing. I thought this was funny. Also mentions of smut but like in conversation very briefly.
Alexei - 56
Melina - 53
Natasha - 30
Yelena - 18
Y/n - 16
Reader POV:
Alexei feels like he has to make a speech before every meal "I have decided we will pray to Thor before each meal out of respect of my dear friend" (I decided they're friends) "Alexei no" Natasha refuses while Yelena's almost falling out of her chair in laughter I try to keep it together but every time I glance over to her I feel like I'll burst into laughter and it doesn't take long before I break into fits of laughter. "What? We need rules in this house, something to believe in, a sort of routine if you will. I took everyone's religious beliefs into account and because you all don't believe in God why don't we pray to a person we can see?"
I look over to Melina to gauge how she feels, by the look on her face I can tell she's pissed "the reason why we can't see God is because he died, now if we are going to pray to anyone in this household we are praying to God" "No Y/n is Jewish so don't force your Christianity onto her." "I'm not Natasha!! But you guys are constantly making fun of my religion and IM SICK OF IT!" Melina stands up "We don't make fun of your religion, we make fun of stupid people in your religion." Yelena calmly states. "Thank you Thor for this meal we are about to receive and bless Melina as she is the one who prepared it." Alexei says over all the fighting "SHUT UPPP" Yelena screams and rushes out of the room. I awkwardly get up from the table and follow her to her room.
"Why do we need to fight all the time?" Yelena whispers brokenly "I don't know Lena. Alexei needs to come up with these 'revolutionary' ideas all the time and Melina can't be wrong at all or accept other people's beliefs." Yelena says nothing so I look over to her. "Hey this will be a story to tell Thor when he comes back to Earth" "ha Alexei will bow to him and beg to be sent to Asgard." We chuckle at that thought. "GIRLS WE'RE NOT DONE WITH DINNER YET!" Melina calls out to us.
We are now eating in silence but Natasha has a smirk on her face, it looks like I could make her burst out laughing from something that's not even funny like if I said chicken she would be in tears. "Melina? Alexei? I have something to announce" we all look at Natasha curiously "I like women." She says smiling with a shit eating grin because she knows that she's pissed them both off "no your not Natalia" Melina chastises her "Melina it's okay my love, she just hasn't found the right man yet that's why you have me! Alexei! So that I can find you a suitable husband" "She doesn't want a husband she wants a wife." I say completely fed up with their commentary. "OOOH WHAT ABOUT THOR?" Alexei screams. I wince at the volume of the noise and Yelena fake gags at the idea.
"At least my other two girls are going to marry men." Melina reassures herself. "You really couldn't be more wrong about that." Yelena laughs. "I'm not marrying anyone I'm asexual" Yelena states "and Y/n is dating Kate. You remember her right? Yeah they have sex like everyday. Hardcore like eating each other out and like all that." Yelena teases "Oh my God, oh no no" Melina looks like she's about to be sick. "It's true just yesterday we-" "NO NO!! I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Melina screeches.
Me and Yelena pack our bags which doesn't end up being a lot as the majority of our possessions are at The Avengers Compound. We head outside of our 'childhood home' and burst out laughing "I never thought I would see the day where you willingly talked about my sex life" I snort loudly "neither but the look on their faces was so worth it" Yelena chuckles.

A friendly reminder that if a member of a closed practice tells you that people should stop practicing a closed practices customs, you don't argue with them based on freedom.
Jewish practice is closed. It is not your place to tell Jews that Messianic Jews have a heritage claim to our practices. No they don't.
