Cooked a lot today. It’s days like these make me feel normal, myself and sane. Pure goodness and happiness in homemade.

It’s the humble meatball and spaghetti in tomato-basil sauce.

For those who are stuck at home due to Covid lockdown / restrictions, try cooking a meal once in a while (i.e. if you don’t already) — it is therapeutic, you have my word. 👩‍🍳

Todo bajo el sol

Ana Penyas’s Todo Bajo el Sol (Everything Under the Sun), is dedicated to “those who had to abandon their hometowns and to those who ended up as strangers in their own land”.

A Spanish graphic novel explores history of mass tourism. Sadly, a topic, not so relevant today, but it does take us back to what we are missing now and may not see it happening for a long time. Stay well folks.

Filter coffee anyone?

Still no signs of travel bubbles. Corona is not over yet, actually it’s getting worse in India. I miss my first home - India.

Today, it’s raining here in Singapore and I had a light work day, so got a chance to pause for bit and smell the wet earth. Also, it’s Earth Day!

I am a tea person and coffee is not really my cup of tea. But staring at the rain fall from my balcony, I was reminded of Bangalore days, similar rainy days, lush green trees (a scene from 15 years ago), hanging around Brigade road or Church street with college buddies, ahh! the good old days. Visiting some of the popular, local coffee shops for a hot cuppa of filter coffee, is what comes to mind. This is the South Indian coffee, hot and strong, the humble filter coffee. The type one can never forget.

Be consistent.

Don’t speak about him to others (e.g., tell funny things) in his presence. (Don’t make him self-conscious.)

Don’t praise him for something I wouldn’t always accept as good.

Don’t reprimand him harshly for something he’s been allowed to do.

Daily routine: eating, homework, bath, teeth, room, story, bed.

Don’t allow him to monopolize me when I am with other people.

Always speak well of his pop. (No faces, sighs, impatience, etc.)

Do not discourage childish fantasies.

Make him aware that there is a grown-up world that’s none of his business.

Don’t assume that what I don’t like to do (bath, hairwash) he won’t like either.

The equation: Baby and your pet

My human baby is 6.5months old and my fur baby is 2.5years old. So the pet came first and is higher up in the family chain :)

The equation (later chemistry) is different for different families, mine was unique too. My fur baby called Zoey, didn’t understand what was going on for the first 2 weeks of Myra’s arrival. The house was rearranged, things looked different, routine seemed odd. Mom, dad seemed stressed almost all-day long:) and to top it all, some many new faces coming home on a weekly basis for the first 3 months.

All this was a big change for someone who is used to excessive attention and set routine for the past 2 years since Zoey was a little pup and before baby Myra arrived. Well, Zoey doesn’t know anything else.

So after 30 days postpartum, I realised (cried a little) that Zoey is feeling left out, jealous for the lack of a better word. I could see it in her eyes and that made my heart sink.

But today 6months down the road, I see the 2 babies learning to be comfortable in each other’s presence. It could also be so becuase Myra can now sit and look into Zoey’s eyes directly and in return Zoey feels connected. This made me smile and realise how important they are both are to me. And can’t wait to see their bond grow stronger.

Some tips:

If you have pet, and a baby is on the way, prep them.. by rearranging things a bit in advance and not when you are in ready to go into labor :)

Have your partner or spouse give them that extra special attention as you (the mum) has so much going on postpartum

Have the pet smell baby things from day 1.. pee diaper are the best to start with (even baby laundry)

Trust your instinct and stay calm esp if you dog has been kind around other kids before

Never leave the 2 alone for the first year

Have baby give some treats to the pet as soon as baby is 4-5months (my dog can do anything for food)

And once life seems a bit settled, take both of them for outings where possible

note - the pet here is a medium side dog - beagle
