Salutations! Just a post of confirmation that I am, indeed, still alive and unwell but otherwise fine.

I shall complete the epilogue to Brews & Bandage as soon as I am able, but I will most definitely be taking a hiatus afterward, as I currently have no passion, and social media (particularly the "social" part) is far too difficult for me to maintain.

Okay. I know this is a blog dedicated to ninja turtles, but I so desperately need to ramble about how much I love Pixar's Elio.

‼️Spoilers ahead ‼️

Elio. You might've heard it's Pixar's worst box office flop— or you might've not heard about it at all. Maybe you've seen it. Maybe you've only watched its reviews. Maybe you know nothing about it.

Whatever the case, here's my take.

This movie resonated with me. To my core. The depiction of loneliness on screen reverberated in my chest so that when I saw Elio's pain, I saw my own.

I felt when Elio stared up at the stars, crying and feeling so devoid of human connection, something I have done on many, many nights.

I felt when Elio had gained the adoration of aliens, so swiftly been abandoned, and begged to an empty starry sky, "Don't leave me. Please."

I felt when Ooooo asked Elio if he'd like to contact his next of kin if he died and Elio merely replied, "no, that's okay," because he didn't think anyone would care.

I felt when Elio whispered "the only people who want me are gone."

I felt when Elio asked if he was the reason no one loved him.

I felt when Elio's clone called out Elio for his low self-esteem and desperation to belong.

I felt when Elio returned to Earth after his rejection and said to Olga, "I didn't think you'd miss me."

I felt Ambassador Questa's last line— something along the lines of "you are unique, Elio of Earth, and sometimes it's hard to be, but you are not alone."

I felt when all the aliens Elio had met left with a chorus of "okay, bye, I love you."

I loved the line "This isn't goodbye. It's just... not yet."

And I adored how the movie closed with the line "are we alone?" and Olga and Elio holding hands, answering that question with a resounding no.

Compared to other classic Pixar films, there isn't much of an emotional core in Elio, but this movie reminds me of a quote from Rise Donatello:

"And yeah, sure, you're a rat, and it probably would've been cooler if you were a tiger or something, but that's not the point!"

Elio could've explored the titular protagonist's trauma deeper. Could've explored... well, a lot more topics to a fuller extent— but I'm not mourning what it could've been; I'm celebrating what it is!

This movie is a much-needed reminder that I am loved and not alone, and the combination of sci-fi, Spanish, loneliness, and aliens... really feels like it was meant for me.

So... thank you, Elio. And thank you, reader, whoever you are.

I regret to announce that I, who was once an avid and passionate Duolingo user, am quitting the app for a litany of reasons— and the last Jenga piece was Duolingo's recent announcement of AI courses.

Duolingo is no longer what it used to be for far too many reasons for my current energy level to explain— but there is nothing I can do to stop the forces of change.

I'm grateful for what I have learned, but it's time to end my 1039-day streak.

As of now, I am uncertain as to whether I'll continue learning languages the old-fashioned way— via focused immersion— or whether or not I'll quit learning languages entirely.
