Ninjago designs and headcannons

These are my designs for the ninja's faces. I haven't done a version of their outfits that I'm happy with yet, but i really want to in the future! I'll keep working hard on character design to make it happen.

underneath I'll include a close up, as well as my headcannons and design process on each ninja 😼 Lloyd might be in a future version!!

Kai

I assigned each of the ninjas a shape, and tried to shape their facial feautures around that shape. For Kai I chose a triangle. I wanted to give him high cheekbones, and I wanted him to be sort of like... objectively handsome, but in an ugly way. I gave him brown eyes with heavy red undertones, and as for his skin I also tried to give him red/warm undertones

Headcannons:

He has facial paralysis on his right side as a result of whatever caused his scar. I think the creators of the show gave him something like this too, judging by the design of his face in later seasons! However lego can only portray so much

I think his hair has the texture and feel of a rock

Nya tried to run her hand through his hair once as a joke, and her hand got stuck until his hairgel wore off

Cole

For Cole I went with a square. I wanted him to appear strong and sturdy, like a mountain. I also really really love his fuckass justin bieber hair from the earlier seasons 😭 So I gave it to him as a little treat for me. I also gave him golden eyes, because I love how the warm accents in his color palette contrast his very dark colors.

Headcannons:

His bulking season is every season

Gives the BEST hugs, and is also the most comforting presence

Works hard on his hair in the morning, and then doesn't care throughout the day

Jay

For Jay I chose an oval. I gave him heterochromia because I think it looks awesome, and the color palette really compliments him overall. I also gave him one million freckles because I think that's a really cool element for his design. As for his facial features, I wanted to give him the slightest baby face ever, because those are the vibes he gives me. Manchild who knows how to get serious when the situation calls for it.

Headcannons:

Trans!!! I'm surprised to not have seen any trans Jay headcannons so far

Shaves the slit in his eyebrows every day. He once went too far accidentally and shaved off half his eyebrow...

His freckles go from one million to one trillion billion in the summer

Zane

For Zane I went with a rectangle. I wanted to emphasize his robot-ness, so I gave him a darker steel color, and made his accents glow. I wanted to give him a sort of uncanny valley type effect, like, ever so slightly unsettling. Mostly because robots scare the shit out of me, and I want to bring that into my version of his design because I love that about him. I love his stupid silly hair so much, yes robot boy, go robot boy.

Headcannons:

Gender non-conforming, and has a very small, very secret collection of a few skirts and dresses.

His eyes glow in the dark unless he turns them off. He forgets to occasionally at night, and the other ninjas have to tell him to turn his eyes off so they can sleep

He's not actually a huge fan of cooking. He just naturally gets it because he has all the tricks and recipes available to him. He does, however, enjoy giving his friends food, for the joy it gives them

Nya

NYA MY DARLINGGGGG!!! I gave her the circle shape, and I kept her hair from the earliest seasons because I LOVE HER HAIR. I'm so in love with Nya, I love drawing her, I love you Nya, JAY MOVE OUT OF THE WAY RIGHT NOW!!! I haven't actually watched seabound yet, but I see people taking the patterns of her ocean form and setting it vaguely into her skin all the time, and it's gorgeous!!! So I did that 😼Other than that, I gave her really cute, round lips because I love drawing lips, and I think I made her hair just a little shorter than it actually is? I also wanted her to have some sort of connection to Kai, so I gave them the same eyecolor.

Headcannons:

She's my best friend and we live happily ever after

I think her and Zane are close friends!! He lets her do his makeup occasionally, and she knows he likes it a lot, even if he pretends to only do it for her sake

She and Jay are in mutual obsession over each other

She looks up to P.I.X.A.L!!

Maybe they keep some snake like qualities too? Maybe some silly little things. Snakes use their tongues to help them smell, so maybe Jay flicks his tongue without realising when he’s concentrating?

Or maybe they have like…. Phantom scales? Maybe they still feel the scales on their skin. Maybe they even has a phantom tail sometimes 🤷‍♂️ Maybe their scars hurt occasionally, or the memory of feeling the scales on their skin haunts them when feeling the indents they left.

Maybe they got used to speaking with long fangs and a snake tongue, so when they turned back they had a lisp for a while!

I like to think they bonded over their experiences and became good friends after the whole ordeal ^^

I wanted to practice dramatic lighting, fog, perspective and a more illustrative style, and I ended up with this piece of your character Willow!! It pictures how I imagine them summoning fog. It does look a bit sinister, so if your characted isn’t particularly sinister let’s imagine they’re just really pissed off 💪
